There ure two distinct objects which tho workingmen, whether common laborers or skilled mechanics, uro (driving io obtain. Tho one is protection, and tho other is pro gross. The Trades Unions, in England at all events, give tho working mou ample pro tection against arbitrary combinations on the pnrt of employers, and this can bo had, nnd will be lind, without recourse to mea sures of violence like those which brought down upon tho Sheffield Rawgrinilers thc deserved condemnation of tho public. Natu rally nnd reasonably tho workingman is n lover of fair play aud equal rights. Tho true workingman will not consent to holp in maiming or killing his mates becnuso thoy refuse to belong to nn association which is intended for their bencilt. The black sheep may attempt to persuado tho non-union man hy boating nnd wounding. Thc honest artisan will wait, knowing that so f-ihterost must in time bring nil thc workmen who are worth having into what ls purely u protec tive ami defensive association. In England tho Trades Unions Iinvo grown so rapidly in numbers and importuned that n mensuro for their recognition ns legal incorporations will undoubtedly receive Parliamentary sanc tion; mid Lord .Stanley, speaking In behalf of n conservatism which is far from being pre possessed in their favor, is content to recog nise them as inevitable, and, on tho whole, a satisfactory form of popular combination. The co-operative, movement represents what may be termed thc aggressive side of modern labor, is opposed to Trades Unions tho defensivo side. Co-operation in this country, in its simplest s hu po, has not been strikingly successful. Tho co-operators have been nblo to obtain provisions, for in stance, of full weight nnd good qtic!:'.,y, at a fair market price; but thc direct profits have not been largo. Nor could any extension of the principio, In ils prosont application, mcot the great want of cither employers or employed.
