pected departure many inquiries have been made

HIS DEBUT AT NEWPORT.
We first made tho acquaintance of "Lord"
Ainsley In July lust at Newport, whore he was at
that time quite prominent, but strange to say,
was registered on thc hotel books as simply "Mr.
H. Lc Roy, London. England." He dressed ex
ceedingly "nobby," drove a splendid turnout,
poid hrs hotel bills houostly, danced, lllrted, and
enjoyed hlmscir generally among tuc fair sex,
and was regarded by matchmaking mnmuion to
be tho most eligible mau it had ever been their
good fortune to meet.
UIS WELCOME IN NEW YORK SOCIETY.
. From thc Springs became to New York, and at
once commenced to entertain lu such an nnusunl
style of elegance and liberality as lo excite thc
attention or rashlonablc society and make him
self uultc ram ons. in a little while the sensa
tion nc evidently desired to make wan created,
and lie was ror a month thc great social Hon or
this city, lie was deluged with Invitations to
dine, and his society was courted on all occa
sions. Possessing a Une education, and being
evidently familiar with good society. Lord Ains
ley soon mada a good and strong impression
upon his friends, who lol lowed him from pillarlo
post. No one slopped to ask who lie w 8, what
was his position and standing. Oh, no I he had
money and was a lord, and that was enough for
New York Indies. Soon thc news or his engage
ment was whispered lu social circles, and his
friend, Captalu Oliver, or Thirty-third street,
thought it wu-; necessary that a Hejeuncr should be
given to thc happy man, in order to announce thc
fact to the public. Thc arrnir duly came mr, and
a full account or lt was published.

made himself conspicuous at thc different hotels,

engagement between him and her daughter. Tho

utmost coolness. Ainsley contrived, however,
to moot Hie young lady at various limes and
