Ainsley it Common Illncklcg-How
Dress Made thc Man-A Fashionable
Belle the "Victim or a. Confidence No?
bleman.
A good deal of sensation was made In fash?
ionable society In New York recently, by Hie |
marringa of (so-called) Lord Hubert Le Hoy S.
Ainsley, ol'England, to Miss Marlin, daughter
of a wealthy resident of Staten Island. Close
on thc heels of thc nuptials come thc following
revelations published in Hie New York Sun :
The short and mysterious career or thc iudl
vldnul calling hlnibcir Lord Hubert Le Roy S.
Ainsley lins considerably agitated our tip-town
fashionables, and since his sudden anti unex?
pected departure ninny inquiries have been made
regarding his position, pedigree, title and means.
These inquiries, ll is CN dent. Should have bCCII
made when his "Lordship'' first appeared in
metropolitan society, and bcrorc he was received
so eagcrlj and entertained so sumptuously as he
was by many of our best families. His advent
and exodus have, however, taught them a lesson
from which they ought to profit, and have once
more proved the rhallowncss of what ls culled
"our best society."
HIS DEBUT AT NEWPORT.
We first made thc acquaintance of "Lord"
Ainsley in July lust at Newport, where he was at
that time quite prominent, but strange to say,
was registered on thc hotel books as simply "Mr.
v H. Lc Roy, London, England." He dressed ex?
ceedingly "nobby," drove a splendid turnout,
paid his hotel bills honestly, danced, flirted, and
enjoyed hlmscir generally among thc ralr sex,
and was regarded by matchmaking mammas to
bo tho most eligible mau it had ever been their
good fortune to meet.
IIIS WELCOUE IN NSW YORK SOCIETY.
. Prom thc Springs lia came to New York, and at
once commenced to entertain In such an unusual
style of elegance and liberality as to excite the
attention or fashionable society and make him
seir quite famous. In a Hi tie while the sensa?
tion nc evidently desired to make wan created,
and ho was for a mouth tho great social Hon or
this city. He was deluged with invitations to
i dine, and hts society was courted on all occa?
sions. Possessing a line education, and being
evidently familiar with good society, Lord Ains?
ley soon made a guod nnd strong Impression
upon hts mends, who lollowed him from pillar to
post. No one stopped to ask who he was, what
was his posit iou and standing. Oh, no I he had
money and was a lord, and that was enough ror
New York ladles. Soon the news of lils cngngc
ment was whispered tn social circles, and his
friend, Captain Oliver, of Thirty-third street,
thought it wu-; necessary that a dejeuner should be
given to thc happy man, In order to announce thc
fact to the public. Thc aiTalr duly came on", and
a full account or lt was published.

Whllo nt Newport Ito chanced to fall in willi thc
beautiful Miss Martin. nf -Staten Ihlaud, with

and prevent thc meetings or th* lovers, Thc or
fortsor Mrs. Martin were, ..Vufortunatcly.not suc?

nt one or Hie hops al Union Hall, Saratoga, wc
wcres'f.own "Lord Ainsley," v.iiom we nt once
recognized as Mr. H. Lc Roy. For two days he
made lilmseir conspicuous al thc different hotels,
spent a great deal tifmonoy, and invariably paid his
bills, which, considering Uie facts now known, ls
remarkable.
U18 Tllll" TO CANADA TO VISIT PRINCE Annum.
Soon arter this entertainment, Lord Ainsley
Huddenly left for Cuntida, nnd lt was given nut
that he had gone to visit lils "old friend, Prince
Arthur." Wc litive since nsccrtalued that the
i-rince cut ireh repudiates the lord, mid professes
ignorance or having ever seen him, bul thinks he?
llas heard of Ainsley in London. Undoubtedly he
hus; for thc latter lu lbG7 was conspicuous oil all
public occasions, mid frequently figured In some
rathertllsrcpniaideatrulrs. Upon thc return or
Lord Alu..ley fi nm Ills "jolly Canadian trip," a
second dejeuner, was given nt Captain Oliver's
residence, Lord Ainsley this time officiating ns
host. The extensiveness mid elegance or thc en?
tertainment, formed a new topic, of conversation
In society, mid Hie high-sounding name or thc
liberal host was ou everybody's tongue.
INQUIRIES AIIOIT lilli AND THEIR URSUI.T.
Meanwhile thc mother or UK fiancee had hastily
dispatched lo Loudon an intimate rriend tn as

orate tales he lind told or lils house ut thc West

friend arrived safely In London, mid ul once
started upon his errand. Thc result can bc told
in a few words,
AN EX-VAI.KT AND A GAMBLER.
It was learned, on the liest and most trustwor?

that he wits a gambler, n frequenter or low places,

CONFER TENUES OP Tni! DISCOVERY.
Upon gaining this intelligence, which she lind
anticipated, Mrs. Martin ut once forbade Ainsley
ever entering lier house again, nnd initialled the
engagement between him and her daughter. Tho
Keene ls described ns having been very slortnv,
during which the discarded Romeo exhibited tile
utmost coolness. Ainsley contrived, however,
lo meet Ihc young lady nt various times anti
places, who had not ceased to love him notwPh
arnndlng the astonishing disclosures that had
come lo light, stamping him ns an im poster, mid
thc wedding day was decided upon.
' lt was agreed thai the marriage should bc clan?
destino. Cards were Issued and all thc prep na?
tions made, nnd npon Miss Martin expressing her
determination io wed "her dear Hiilicrl" In spite
of every tiling and everybody, thc foolish girl was
discarded by her mother and relations, with Hm
exception of nu aunt, nt whose house np-town
Hie murringo WOB solemnized. The wedding oc?
curred, and was followed hy nn English wedding
breakfast, of which nil thc ??neml>lcd company
partook. Several respectable New Yorkers were
present at tho ceremony, who nt that Hmo did
