Another Strike.
The Union Longshoremen arc nffnltl (ill a

Now they declare Hint they will not help to
load any vessel until n stevedore who lias
been discharged by his employer is restored
lo his place. In plain words, these long
shoremen intend to dictate, if they can,
what wages shall bo paid, and who shall,
and shall not be employed, by the ship
musters and agents at this port.
This foolishness can only bo stopped in one
way. If the employers give an inch the
strikers will take an ell. They must hold
fus I ami refuse to make a hair's-brcadlh of
concession, for if they recede now thoy will
givo tho signal for new exnetions which it
will be impossible to endure.
We believe that laborer- can be had to
take the places of the stn... ,s; but, whether
they can or cannot, the employers would
lose more by giving way than by quietly
standing their ground. Fifty or sixty able
bodied laborers uro advertised for this

With the coming month or November the
series of political elections for tho present
your will he closed. In tho results of Hie
erections which have been held up to this
lime there has not been much variety, al
though Radicalism has received more than
one sturdy blow, ami tho National Democra
cy havo gullied new and decided advantages.
Now lliimpshired led off in March, Heeling
a Governor and members of tho State Leg
islature. As usual of late years, the Rc
publlcuus were successful. Connecticut fol
lowed in April, electing a Republican Qov
eor und securing a Republican majority iu
h brunches of the Legislature. Iu July
tho Virginia elections wore held. The Dem
ocrats made no party nominations, nud sup
ported the ticket of the moderate Republi
cans or Anti-Radicals?tho Democratic
vole electing the Governor and a largo ma
jority in tho State Senate and House. This
was, to all intents and purposes, a crushing
defeat of the hitler-end Radicals. In Au
gust the Conservatives or Anli-Kadicsils
swept Tennessee, defeat ing Stokes ami elect
ing Senior and a majority of the State Leg
islature. Again were the bitlor-endois
smitten hip and thigh, all hough in Tennes
see, us in Virginia, Iho Radical candidates
hud on their side tho whole olliclnl Influence
of iho Slate and Federal Governments. In
September Iho Republicans were victorious
in Vermont and Maine, which was noth
ing new or strange. California, in the
same month, elected ti new Legislature,
and the Democrats obtained a largo ma
jority in that body. In the lato judicial
elections the Democrats were again suc
cessful by n thumping vote. Pennsyl
vania, Ohio and Indiana followed during
the present month of October, and in each
Slate the Republicans prevailed. Rut in
Pennsylvania the Radical majority wiw rut
down from 28,81)8 in 1S68 to 4690 in 1809,
and in Ohio from 41,-128 in 18G8 to about
8000 in 1869. On tho whole, the Democrats
have done very well, in spite of their occa
sional blunders of mnnngement and policy.
Elections are to be held next month in
Now York, New Jersey, Now Hampshire,
Massachusetts, Illinois, Minnesota, Wiscon
sin, Mississippi, Maryland and Texas. In
New York the election takes placo on Tues
day next, nntl tho ofllccrs to be elected
are a Secretary of Stute, a Comptroller, a
Treasurer, an Attorney-General, a Stnto En
gineer and Surveyor, a Cannl Commissioner,
an Inspector of State Prisons, two Jtulgos
(if the Court Of Annonla oi
the Supreme Court ami a full Legislature.
Tho Democratic majority at the elections for
Secretary of State two years ago was 47,930;
but the Radicals arc working desperately
hard to outgeneral their opponents. In
nominating General Franz Sigel for Secre
tary of State and Iloraco Greeloy for Comp
troller, they make n high bid for tho German
vote, and that of any lambs who may be
willing to stray from tho Democratic fold.
Thorc is no doubt, however, that tho Domo
crntt will, us usual, carry tho day, although
the elections hinge more upon local and
personal than national questions.
Illinois does not this year elect State ofll
ccrs, but on Tuesday next will elect mem
bers of a State Constitutional Convention.
This convention will determine whether tho
word "white" shall bo stricken from tlio
clause in relation to suffrage. In tho Legis
lature the Republicans havo a majority; hut
tho Democrats claim that in tho constitu
tional convention the strength of tho two
parlies will he about equal. On the aamn
day Chicago elects a new city government.
Thcro arc two tickets in tho field?ono the
regular Republican ticket, and the other Hie
Citizens' ticket, supported by both Republi
cans and Dcmouruts for tho purpose of
breaking up tho corrupt Radical ring.
The Massachusetts election for Stato ofTl
cers and members of tho Legislature will
also lake place on Tnesday next. The cam
paign has acquired additional interest from
the prominence given tho temperance ques
tion, and from tho Tact that tho Labor Re
form party lias entered the Held aud norni
tinted a separate ticket. Tlioro is every
prospect that the now movement will cut
deeply into the Itadical majority, which last
