ed Nathan Appleton, Esq., as their representa
tive at the ceremonies attending the opening
of ttie Suez Canal. The Advertiser says Mr.
Applcton Is a young man of marked capacities
and promise, and bus already shown bis indi
viduality and character by preferring a life of
active usefulness to one of wealthy indolence.
He is at present on a tour of observation
through Sweden. Norway and Russia, and to
accompanied by General Banks.

made from the yelk of hens' eggs. The oggs

pure curiosity of their people, but their very

Another Strike.
The Union Iaongehoreisimi nro n^nio on a
strike. Three weeks ago they demanded
higher wages, and failed lo carry their point,
for the good reason thnt plenty of mon could
be four.;! io do the work at a lower price.
Now they decline Hint they will not help to
loud any vessel until a stevedore who bus
been discharged by his employer is restored
to his place. In plain words, these long
shoremen intend to dictate, If they can,
what wages shnll bo paid, nnd who sha.ll.
and shall not bo employed, by the ship
masters nnd agents at this port.
This foolishness can only bo stopped in ono
way. If the employers give an inch the
strikers will take nn ell. They must hold
fast and refuse to rnako n hair's-hrcadth of
concession, for it they recede now thoy will
givo tho signal for new cxnctlons which it
will be impossible to endure.
We believe that laborers can bo had to
take the places of tho strikers; but, whether
they can or cannot, the employers would
lose more by giving way than by quietly

With the coming month of November tho
scries of political elections for tho present
yenr will lie closed. In the results of the
elections which have been held up to this
time there lias not been much variety, al
though Hiiilicitlism has received more tliun
one sturdy blow, and tho National Democra
cy have gained new nnd decided advantages.
New Ilatllpshircd led nil in March, electing
n Governor nnd members of tho State Leg
islature. As usual of late years, the Re
publicans wen? successful. Connecticut fol
lowed in April, electing a Republican Gov
^LJior nnd securing a Republican majority iu
Toth branches of the Legislature. In July
tho Virginia elections woro held. Tho Dem
ocrats made no party nominations, nnd sup
ported tho ticket of the moderate Republi
cans or A ni i-Radicals?the Democratic
vote electing the Governor nntl a large ma
jority in the State Senate nnd House. This
whs, to nil intents and purposes, n crushing
defeat of tlm hitter-end Radicals. In Au
gust the Conservatives or AnU-Rndicals
swept Tennessee, defenting Stokc3 nnd elect
ing Senior nnd a majority of the State Leg
islature. Again were tho bilter-eiidcr.h
smitten hip and thigh, although in Tennes
see, us In Virginia, the Radical candidates
liad on their side tho whole ollicinl influence
of the State and Federal Governments. In
September the Republicans were victorious
in Vermont and Maine, which was noth
ing new or strange. California, in tiic
smuc month, elected a new Legislature,
and the Democrats obtained a lnrgo ma
jority in that body. In tho lato judicial
olectlons the Democrats wore again suc
cessful by a thumping vote. Pcnnsyl
i vania, Ohio and Indiana followed during
tho present month of October, and- in each
State tho Republicans provniled. But in ]
Pennsylvania the Radical majority was eut
down from 28,898 iu 1868 to 4696 in 1869,
and in Ohio, from 41,428 in 1868 to about
8000 in 1869. On tho whole, the Democrats
have done very well, in spite of tholr occa
sional blunders of management and policy.
Elections are to bo held next month in
Now York, Now Jersey, Now Hampshire,
Massachusetts, Illinois, Minnesota, Wiscon
sin, Mississippi, Maryland and Texas. In
Now York tho election takes placo on Tues
day next, and tho officers to bo elected
are a Secretary of Stato, a Comptroller, a
Treasurer, an Attorney-General, a Stato Ep
ginccr and Surveyor, a Canal Commissioner,
an Inspector of State Prisons, two Judges

the Supremo Court and a full Legislature.
Tho Democratic majority at tho elect ions for
Socrotnry of State two years ngo was 47,930;
but tho Radicals aro working desperately
hard to outgeneral their opponents. In
nominating General Franz Sigol for Socre
tary of Stato and Horace Grceloy for Comp
troller, they make a high bid for tho German
vote, anil that of any lambs who may bo
willing to stray from tho Democratic fold.
Thoro is no doubt, howovcr, that tho Demo
crats will, as usual, carry the day, although
the elections hlngo more upon local and
personal than national questions.
Illinois does not this year elect Stato offi
cers, but on Tuesday next will eloct mem
bers of a Stato Constitutional Convention.
This convention will d?termine whothor tho
word "white" shall bo stricken from tho
clause in rotation to sufTragc. In tho Legis
lature the Republicans have a majority; but
tko Democrats claim that in tho constitu
tional convention tho strength of tho two
parties will bo about equal. On tho samo
day Chicago elects a now city government.

cans and Democrats for tho purposo of
breaking up tho corrupt Radical ring.
The Massachusetts election for Stato ofll

toil. A special election will also lie held in
tho Seventh Congressional District, to Uli
tho vacancy caused by tho resignation of j
Secretary Uoutwell. The Republican candi

Attorney-General Hour. Tho Democratic
candidate is l.uiu ett Salstunstull, of Neavton.
On Tuesday, also, Minnesota will elect
StnlO ofllcers nnd members or tho Legisla
ture. There are throe tickets in the field?
tho Kopublicnu, Hornco Austin for Gover
nor; the Democratic, George L. Otis for Go\>
ornor; und tho Temporauce, Uov. David
Cobb for> Governor. Tho strong pointo[ tho
canvass is opposition to tho tariff, to which
the low price of wheat is declared to oo due.
In 1868 the Republican majority was 15,470.
On the srinic day 'Wisconsin elects n full
State ticket and the members of the Legisla
ture. Tho Republican candidate for Governor
is Lucius Fuircliild, and tho Democratic
Charles D. Robinson. Tho Republicans had
lust year, for President, ft ninjorily of 21,117,
and will undoubtedly be successful this year.
Marylnnd elects on Tuesday the members
of tin; Genend Assembly, n, Stale Comp
troller nnd County Commissioners. Tho
present Legislature is composed entirely of
Democrats, who uro .expected to have, us
usual, ft majority of about 30,000.
Now Jersey elects on Tuesday a portion of I
the .Stale Senate, and all Ihc members of the j
House of Representatives. This gallant
State may bo counted on for u Democratic
majority. New Hampshire has a special
election on tho snmo day upon tho question
of n Constabulary law. A change or 2500
votes would give the State to the Demo
crats, nud the Republicans fool thai they
tread on delicate ground. The Constabu
lary law may cause, their defeat.
On Tuesday, tho 30th November, Missis
sippi votes upon tho Reconstruction consti
tution adopted In May, 1868. Tho disabili
ties, test oath, nnd lonning the credit of the
State clnuscs nre submitted to a separate
vote. Tills Is tho second Reconstruction
constitulion submitted to the people, the
llrst having been rejected. At the same
time State officers, Congressmen nnd mem
bers ol tho Legislature will bo elected.

the out-and-out Radical ticket, nnd the
other the Conservative ticket. Jnmcs L.
Alcorn is the Kadi cal candidate and Judj
Dent the Conservative enndidate for Gover
nor. The parents or General Alcorn wcro

is u renegade Confederate, who, after tho

.The Stato of Texas closes the elections of
tho year. The pcoplo will vote on the adop
tion of the Reconstruction constitution,
adopted in Austin in June last, nnd wllf|
elect Stato olllccrs and Congressmen. In
1868 a proposed constitution was rejected.
Tho. election takes place on November 80.
There nre three tickets in the Held?Radical,
Conservative and Democratic General
Davis, the Radical candidate for Gover
nor, and General Hamilton, the Conserva
tive enndidate, are in favor of adopting the
constitution. This is opposed by the straight
out Democrats. There is some doubt of the
regularity Of tho Democratic nominations,
and tho chances favor the "third party,"
against whom President Grant and his Cubi
net arc using all the terrors nnd inilucnccs
of olllcinl decapitation and public plunder.
General Hamilton is an Alabnuiiun, and nn
original Union man.
