as women, that I am sure will never ho ob
scured bv lime's attrition. Hoth wore of
humble birth, and both were remarkable for
the distinguished elegance ot their manners,
but with tills difference?that Sonlng, charm
ing anil elegant on thestnge, wus more charm
ing and Hemmt in private; while Rachel, who
behind the footlights, wns the Ideal of n queen
or n great Indy of the old school, In private,
although courteous and well mannered, show
ed the" stamp of her origin and her pro
fession?how, 1 cannot tell, but there It wus,
unmistakably. Sontag, If she had been born
Countess do Rossi, or for that matter, do
Monlniorenci, could not have shown In her
personal hearing nobility of a higher or sim
pler type; but on the Rtage she was surpassed
In this respect by tho Jewess, who, as unable
In private to conceal her breeding as her nice,
showed yet upon the stage tho command and
graclousness of those who are born In the
purple.

men; and when I saw it still preserved, I then

was old enough to know what woman's beauty
