There was a sprinkling ol frost In Claren don on Sundav last. The firet frost of the season made its appear ance In Georgetown on Sunday. Orangcbnrg Court, The Nows says: "Jutlgo Carpenter arrived on Monday last, and the Court of General Ses alons was convened on thut morning, and has been In session during the week. The docket of criminal cases is very large, and it is proba ble that the court will be Hitting during the next two weeks. The Lutheran H y nod. The Lutheran Synod closed its session at Walhalla on Monday last. A large number of | distinguished ministers from a distance attend ed and gave the place an unusually lively ap pearance. We understand a portion of its deliberations related to tho present condition and future prospects of the Newbcrry College, a subject, or material Interest to the county. Dr. D. McNeil Turner was elected a professor In the Institution. A. Child Beaten to Death. The Chesterfield Democrat says: "On last Saturday an inquest was held on the body of a Uttlo negro, who. from the verdict of the jury, was killed by Its own father having beaten it unmercifully. Another of his children was also severely beaten, and otherwise maltreated, and was wandering about town seeking shelter wherever it could, to avoid the pre sence of Its Inhuman parent. This child was reported to bo nearly dead during the week. The wife of tho same scoundrel lias suffered from his brutality, and It is time be should pay the penalty of what used to be the law. Hf name Is Gabriel Lynch, and he has taken roomy at the Jail for the present.* The Townehip System. The grand jury of Lancaster County In their presentment say: "Tho grand Jury arc fully satisfied that the township system for the counties of the State, created by an act of the last Legislature, is an impractical system un der tbo present state of things. This system Is, no doubt, well adapted to densely popula ted and wealthy countries, such as may bo found in parts of Europe and parts of the United States, where lands are worth from one to three hundred dollars per acre; but in our State, where tho population is a small one, and the lands not worth more, upon an aver age, than three, or four dollars per acre,-the whole system becomes expensive and oppres sive. They would, therefore, respect fully sub mit the matter to the Legislature of the Ht ate. and beg a repeal of the act creating the town ships, or a suspension of the same lor the term of ten years." In Memorlam. The - Clarendon Press says: "It Is proposed to hold a meeting next solos-day for the pur pose of raising Ibnds to erect a monument to to the memory of Clarendon's brave and honored dead. It Is thought that tho small sum of fifty cents from each citizen of tho district would more than accomplish tho purpose. It - is right, and no more than the ties of friendship and affection de mand of us, to pay some fitting tribute to the memory of our sons and brothers who fell In tho struggle for the 'Lost Cause;' and whilo we believe there la not one man In our dis trict but accepts fully and heartily the deci sions of tho war, wo behove also that there Is not one man who was not true to the 'Lost Cause,' and who Is now and will remain truo to the fallen brave, and the constitution aa it was, but what will como forth with'a glad vet sad heart, ready and anxious to perform the solemn but pleasant duty of contributing fifty oouta to hand tho names of Clarendon's honored dead down to posterity." Court In Laoxeai. Th? Herald says: "The Circuit Court commenced its sftttngs on Monday morn ing hiB Hon. Judge T. O. P. Vernon pre siding. Larcenies form the bulk of tho business, and tho Mate enfranchised' al most exclusively darken the prisoner's dock. Several negroes have been convicted already, and others stand Indicted by the grand jury. One negro has been convicted of assault with intent to ravish a white woman. Tho grand Jury has returned bills In two cases vs. P. H. "colt, charged with breach of trust and lar ceny, In the matter of the Southern Express robbery. In AuguBt last. There has been a large attendance, especially of Africa?the ne groes coining in swarms, by choice as well as by compulsion. Judge Vernon and Solicitor McGowan dispatches buslncsa rapidly and with commendable and agreeable suavltey. Wo are glad to be able to speak as to the gene ral satisfaction expressed as to the efficiency of these Important officers. It Is believed that the juries will scale old debts, alter the manT ner of the surrounding districts, and In ac cordance with the frequent recommendations of the grand juries for this district." Cotton Crop and Tax Crop. The Edgcflcld Democrat says: "Judging from appearances around us as well as from the re ports coming from every quarter in this sec tion of country, tho crop of cotton must bo much small than any one has calculated it would be. The planters all unite in asserting that they never knew the fields so bare at this time of the year. They are as near through the gathering of the crops as they usually are this late in December. The lateness of the fall has been of llttlo advuntagc. Two monttiB dif ference in the gathering of the crop argues n falling off in quantity of about one-half. The dlftloulty frequently has been to get out-all the cotton that tho fields have yielded, but this year it will be to furnish employment to cotton {tickers for about half the season. Such a ruli ng off is unprecedented, and we do not know' that it, has been satisfactorily accounted, for. The drought, of course, had a great deal to do with the deficiency of bolls, but why the bolls that aro formed do not open is another matter. Added tc all this. Is a short -crop of corn, and consequently high prices for provisions. Wo are dot thoroughly reconstructed yet. The tar crop Is abundant, and the reapers povcr rest from their labors. From a log to a' par sonage, everything contributes to their stores. Happy government I Miserable country ! Shreds of St?u Bfowa. , rhe- Georgetown court, Judge Green presid ing, convened on Tuesday, we have not heard of much business of importance before thd court, and presume it will adjourn by the end of the week. Sales have been made or about 30 bales on the nt>ove figures dur ing the past week, but nntll planters Indicate their desire to sell the stock on hand, which la held at high figures, we can quote no market. The receipts at this port since October 14th amount to 16,144 balca of upland and 412 bales of Bca Island, or which 13,364 bales or upland were received per c it It, 1446 bales or upland and 239 bales or sea Island per A and O R R, 335 hales up land from landings on Savannah River, 208 bales sea Island from Florida, and 25 bulea sea Island from union Head. The exports for the same time have been 8660 bales npland and 110 balca acn island, of which 4561 bales upland and 40 bales sea Island were shipped to New York, 703 balca upland to Baltimore, 268 bales upland and 6 bales sea island to Philadelphia, 3138 bales upland to Liverpool, and 10 bales upland and 65 bales sea island to Charleston. Rich.?The stock or new rice has been Increased daring the past week by arrivals at both mills, and operations have been commenced, patting clean on the market. The demand has been good, at prices from 8>i to BKefor prime. Advices con tinue unfavorable both from Carolina and Geor gia. The samples or rough Rent to market have not yielded aa much as was expected. We sec no reason to change our opinion that the present crop will exhibit a deficit of fully one-third, and that prices must rule high during the season. We hear of sales of a lot of clean at an advance of ?Je on onr lost quotations, and with the presort lights before us, we can only advice planters to he cau tious In putting their grain on the market. There have been heavy arrivals, bnt we hear of no sales beyond those mentioned above.
