It Is said that about fifty persons, more or less, connected with the re cent Wall street Hurry, have been subpoinoed." The Death of Lord Derb)-. A cable telegram announces the death, on Saturday lust, of the Right Hon. Edward Geoffrey Stanley, Earl of Derby, in the 70tli yc?r of his age. Lord Derby, then Mr. Stanley, was educa ted at Eaton und Oxford, und when only twenty-two years old was elected to the House of Couinions us member for Stoek brldgo. High position ami family inlliicnco doubtless'obtained for him so . early a dis tinction ; but whul ha won as a Stanley lie knew how to retain us n 111:111. . His inuiden speech was nol made until tfcjfco years after his election, and in the course of the same session he exhibited a readiness, aptitude ami ability worthy of an experienced deba ter. It is worthy of remark that his second speech in the Ilouso was on the subject of the Irish Church, a question which caused his resignation as Colonial Secretary in 1833, which occupied his decliuing years, and whose solution was finally accomplished by his political opponents only a few months ago. Mr. Stanley commenced his officiai life as Under Secretary for the Colonies, and was subsequently* nominated to the then arduous post of Chief Secretary for Ireland. Upon his appointment he, according to practice, resigned his seat in the House am', wont be fore his constituents for re-election. At Preston he was defeated, but was soon fifter w ird returned for Windsor, and was engaged in those single-handed conflicts with O'Con nol and She'll, which for years excited Par. linment and alarmed the country. While the Reform bill was under discu.ision In 1832, Mr. Stanley's singular genius for de bute was exercised with effect in defence of its provisions; and about the saine time he Carried n ministerial measure for National E ?ucatiun in Ireland. A year later he carried the bill for emancipating the West India slaves, "haviug for that purpose be come Colonial Secretary ami a member of the Cabinet. Disapproving of Lord Mel bourne's project for still further reducing the Irish Church Establishment, he resigned his seat in the Cabinet, and remained it) the ranks of the opposition until 1811, whon ho accepted the seals of the Colonial office. In 184.4, he was elevated to the peerage, with the title of Baron Stanley of Bickcrstaffe, and when the repeal of the corn laws was deter mined on, Lord Stanley retired from the Cabi net, mid soon after appeared as the head of the Protectionist opposition. In 1851 Lord Stanley, srrcceedod his father as fourteenth Earl Derby, anil in 1852 became Prime Min ister. In the same year his eldest son, Lord Stanley, was appointed . Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. The financial plans of his Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. Disraeli, were condemned by the coun try, and, in deference to a vote of the House of Common i, Lord Derby tendered his resig nation and resumed the position of leader of the opposition, n Lord Derby declined to ac cept the premiership in 1855, but formed bis second administration ?n '858. The Reform bill, Introduced by t!. Derby ministry, was rejected by the Hou.se. Parliament was dissolved, but the new c!ecti:):i3 gave the ministers no increased strength, and in 185!) thay resigned. Lord Stanley, the eldootson of Earl Derby, sale at this time iu the Cabinet a? Secretary of Stato for India. Tho second administration of Lord Russell fell in June, 186?, und In 1867 Lord Darby, Tor the third time, became Prime Minister. On the 25th February of the following year Earl Derby, whoso health had for somo time been iuUriu, resigned tho premiership into the bauds of Mr. DisraoU. The Reform bill, the great feature of Earl Derby's administration, was introduced by Mr. Disraeli In March, 1867. Its provisions were decidedly more liberal than those of the Russell-Gladstone bill of the preceding year, and it was received with considerable favor and ultimately passed. The whole management of the mea sure was entrusted to Mr. Disraeli ; for Earl Derby was too strongly bound to the old Conservative party to. take any very active part In iL The Disraeli ministry was for mally attacked by Mr. Gladstone in March, 1868, when he introduced a resolution for tho disestablishment of the Irish Church, This resolution was steadfastly opposed by the Conservative party, but It passed the House in April and led to tho resignation of Mr. Disraeli aud his colleagues In the fol lowing December. Iu tho debates last spring ou the Gladstone bill to disestablish the Irish Church, Earl Derby took no con spicuous part, but tho whole of his inlluenco was steadily thrown against tbc passage of the bill. It was not oq|y as a statesman that Earl Derby won for himself a lasting reputation. As a classical scholar he had few cqun'*> und his translaliou of tho Iliad in bla>< v vor8C. published in 1865, is highly pmiaed by the most competent critics. Mr. Gladstone, the present Prime Minister, Is one of tho first Crock scholars of tho day. These groat men, leading the cohorts of the opposition or conducting the government of a mighty nation, woro deop students as well as mas ters of statecraft. With tbem tho power to watch over and control the destinies of an empire went band in hand with a scholarship which raised martial Roma and luxurious Greece from the dust of ages, and made their heroes to live and breathe, while Bismarck worked and planned, and Napoleon formed anew the tangled wob of fortune. . Throughout his life Barl Derby was op posed to change or Innovation. With him church and Stato wore ajiko sacrod; no UmptaUon could indnoe him to give way to a pressura which hu roared would overthrow the bulwark of the constitution. As ho I grow older he oceanic more intolerant In his political opinion*, lie wus a Tory to the lost. Kurl Derby Is succeeded by hi s eldest tiun, Lord Stanley, who is now forty-eight years old. A correspondent of tho Clarendon Press ex poses the dishonesty of buying produce when thorp is a presumption that it is stolen. A correspondent of the Ornngoburg News suggests that "every one keep an eye on "these seed cotton sellers and buyers, nntl "bring some of them to the bar or justice, "the moment a clue can bo hud that will "send them to the Penitentiary."
