Ah, hail theyrc that winning art,
I well mluat call lt? "kill illvlnc:
Ana wcie faure 'twould mukc your heart
Kcal in longeiilul throbs with mine,
Again PI seek the Muses' howers,
Wliic-i long i've passed neglected by
Again Invoke the fairy powers
To aid my harli's wild melody.
But, ah I I fear 'twere fruitless toll
Experience has thc lesson taught, '
Thal woman's fond, enrapturing smile
Can never be so cheaply .bought.
And I would spurn, however dcor,
Thc heart that verse had power of stealing
Its passion could not be sincere
Love claims a purer test of feeling.
Tel I had hoped that ero 'twas known
That 1 could pen a song or sonnet,
Your bosom'B little guest had nown
On Cupid's wing, and 1 had won lt.
Come, tell nie, Is lt so or not
Whate'r my fate, 1 beg to know it;
Say-and thc Muses nil forgot
You love thc Man, and not thc Poet.

Wu ll Street -Settling Day - Plensaro

l,ast Thing in Morals-The Corner
Th? Opposition liing-Thc Confusion
Margins-Heavy Losses.
Tho following very interesting letter, dated
October 10, ls from thc New York correspon?
dent of the llnllimorc Gazette:
New York ls weary. Wall street ls as sad
ivs ira were in sackcloth and ashes, anil the
settling day, which has come, has been to
many u much more rueful affair Utan was the
mauuafs (?uart d'heure to soilless Jiabelate.
Unfortunately, it ls not yet over. Doy after
day some bold struggler tosses np the sponge,
while for weeks to como thcro will bo not a
few moro who will be forced to succumb to
thc Inevitable Tact of Anni settlement. "Wall
street in dull und despondent, and the only in?
terest which Is manifested Is the feverish ex?
citement of some unfortunate stock gambler
whoso last margin s up,ami whose fntc depends
upon thc next turn of tho Stock Hoard wheel,
li was a funny thing to see thu telegraphic
o nice nt Jerome Tark, directly . under tho
grand stand, and lt gavo ono a curious idea of
a New Yorker's pleasure, to watch the little
yellow envelopes which were now and then
handed in und passed round, In the sacred pre?
cincts, and even on the quarter stretch or at
thc very door of tho Judges' stand, for Mr.
Bull or Mr. Beor, or Mr. Long or Mr. Short.
As you stood by tho pool shanty and heard
Underwood cry out "Now for Nemesis," you
_ might seo a portly looking gentleman with a
swell necktie, In Ill-assorted Keeping with his
careworn face, stamping a slip of paper under
his heel and hear him mutter "Pacific, sixty."
That was lils Nemesis. There was a pool
there, bigger and blacker than any Dr. Un?
derwood could put up. Thcro was no more
amusement for this pleasure-scekeca) There
was no favorito for him either on the field or
on the benches, and the only consolation he
got, even from his dearest friend, was the re?
mark that "Pacific wasn't.even worth sixty,
as there was no stock ' that could possibly
show a value of t weivo millions."
Yet this Is Now Yorkslife. "Of coarse there
aro educated and quiet and relined people In
New York. But they do their gallopplng on
the sido tracks. The men of New York, who
make the New York world, arc the Wall street
stock brokers and monoy dealers, newspaper
men, manufacturers of patent medicines, he?
roes of successful railroad combinations, and
occasionally a mcnagcrlo man, like Fisk, who
prefers a ,rring" to a circus. . How could lt
bc othcrwl?o ? What man in this country can
expect to Inherit property enough- to live nt
tho rate fast New York lives at? How many
men engaged in any reasonably respecta?
ble and legitimate business con hope to
accumulate a fortune, which will enable
them to rival tho lavish expenditure here,
that ls fast approaching that ot 'the days
of decaying and luxurious Horrie,. No ono
pays a thousand dollars yet awhile for
a fish, nor do they cut aqueducts through
. mountains for tho purpose of supplying a
pond, where tlioy occasionally fatten their
pets on human flesh. But there are men who
nave given entertainments which cost ten
thousand dollars, and lt was only a short time
ago that a broker,.who had "made a turn,7'
sent his .check for $2S,000, in a bouquet, 'to a
dancing girl, whoso graceful contour had at?
tracted bin attention' on thc boards ut Niblo's.
Such men arc proud of-all this, and naturally.
- - lt ls a glory for them to feel that they are self
made, and tboy know that I. ls not every ono.,
who has been brought un to deal in coppers,
to m enan re. with yard sticks, and to pick hones
In tho scullery. Who can throw asido tho tram?
mels of carly education, bargain for millions,
traffic on a grand scale,,and play host to Gene?
ral Grant, Secretary Boutwell and others of
the elite of this great country.
The last paulo has only had tho tendoncy of
confirming this condition pf things. Many of
the regular' brokers, straightforward and lion
. ?st gentlemen, confining their operations to
legit!mato business, have been ruined. Though
lr ?tili, doing buBlncss,,tholr means are so limited
that lt will bc some timo before they cnn un?
dertake largo order?. .They aro rather under
a. aloud. The unscrupulous gamblers, who
b ave? work* cl their ruin, nro tho heroes ot the
day. Instead of being driven from the street,
they have more friends thau ever, nnu thc
only feeling manifested ls a desire to get a
finger in thc next little plc-. This is about the
tone of the moriled society of trio country In
general, as welt os of" New York li).particular,
what tho morals are',' if they'match, need not
be toll'.
The last awful "corner,^'and the terrific
{anic which ensued, afford a very lively lllus
ratlon of what is considered in New York a
grand combination. Fisk and Smith, Gould A
[artlii, who were tho two most prominent
parties, determined to lay a little' trap and to
go 4n for a grand cohn. Thc services of Mr.
Abel Corbin, tho' brotbcr-ln4s\w of'the Presi?
dent, a very quiet, shrewd and pious old gen?
tleman, who married bis wife, a few years ago,
on spec, for the benefit of her "influential con
section." almost "nnslght seen," and has
Hlnoe, tnoy say, managed to pick up a couple
of millions, wero. Jurat engaged. General
Dan Butterfield; ' the 'government financial
agont in New York, lt ls asserted, was
also.let Into tho secret-for reasons no doubt.
At any rate, ho ls now generally termed:
the Fisk-al agent. -Who else went In, ls
not positively known, but two more gentle?
men, holding very high official positions, aro
spoken ol In very plain terms oy th? "ring."
When the team was all ready, a start was made.
Gold was bought up quietly until ono hundred
and ten mintons had been actually bought and
paid for, or bargained for. AB last os lt was
taken in, lt was loaned out to the "shorts,"
who wero selling freely, and thus the amount
of the purchases raado by the clique wcre
nclthcr known nor felt As thcro were only
seventeen millions of loose gold in New York,
tho "corner" was consid?reos, certain ono, ana
when tho traps wero all laid for certain strong
?iarllcs, and the plans in attired, gold was called
n, and, os lt becamo scarce, the price was run
up. Success was certain. Confident In thc
assurances they liad, they felt that they had
tho power to put tho price where they chose.
Tho only question was now much tho dlfforcnt
brokera, who had contracted to deliver coln,
could alford to^my for lt. Tho object was to
get all that could bo got from men. who I
could pay differences, hoing solvent. If
forced too hard, they would break and pay
nothing. Hut Just as they wero glorying In
their imaginary millions, their crockery fell to
thc ground, and they found their dreams as
vain os those of the sanguino Alna^char. Not
timi they kicked over their bask et themselves
no Indooil I lt was their friends who did it for
them. On tho morning of that eventful block
FridayLIIIO nows was circulated that Jay Cooke
A Co., Duncan Sherman ft Co., and other lead?
ing bankers, had hud a meeting, had formed a
"ring," hod pledged to General Grant two to
ono III foreign securities, in London, for gold
enough to knock tho market, nave tho coun
stlry and defeat Pendleton and Packer at tho
corning elections. It waa u new thing in?
deed for tho President of these United
States to be lending government gold for
Wall street gambling operations, and to agree
to rccclvo as security for tho loan pledges or !
stock, which, In tho event of failure, might
nover como to linnd. Dut lt was soon ovl
-dent" that, from patriotic virtue'or some
other inoUye, General Grant was not obdu?
rate to such entreaty, and that certain parties
liad an opun sesame to the treasury vaults.
Not knowing tho extent ol lt, and finding
themselves with no friends at headquarters,
tho clUiiio got frightened. At once they be?
gun tc nettle on tho best terms they could ob?
tain. Mr. Speyer was sent out to buy up mil?
lions nt ICO, while his principals were ucluuUy
? elliur nt 150, or on any reusonublo terms they
could, lu auolhor purt or the Gold ltoom. For
un hour tho confusion wan frightful. Kvcry
one aeomcd to loso his head. Balts and pur
chnsos wore mndc without regard to responsi?
bility. ?nd at the end or thu day lt was found
I hut" there were over six hundred millions of
gold to be settled Tor In Ibo (?old Clearing
House, most or the partios boina; evidently In?
solvent, ?nd nobody knowing what thoBo
who had met their engagements ought to re?
ceive.
Thc consequences ol' this eventful day have
boen very curious ns well us serious. Thc very
bunkers who stopped In to stop tho panic wcro
caught In the general confusion und universal
mull excitement. They borrowed gold which
they were to return. They sold at 1G0. One
banker sold live millions nt this ruto to Speyer,
nnd then turned round nnd bought in nt 150
from Smith, Could & Martin. Speyer vanished,
und the bauker who made this very clever turu
found next dav that, InBtcad of having sold
"short" nt 160, he in reality had gone heavily
"long" at 160. He repudiates tho purchase on
thc ground that Speyer was an agent for thc
other party. But will thc proof bo forthcom?
ing ?
Tlie history of that terrible day will never bc
known. Men sal down beforo noon and cross?
ed their hands, considering ruin certain. Be?
fore 2 o'clock the turn came, and thoy had
large balances at their control. Others who
wero called on for margins had put them up,
in accordance with general usage, until they
were nearly exhausted. When tho bubble
burst and they endeavored to get them back,
lt was too late. At least one house saw thus
thc accumulation of years Bwept away In two
short hours. Ono Arm, when called upon for
margins, at once admitted its readiness to
comply, but inslsted on making tho deposits in
a trust company. "Wc will meet your culls,"
said tho head ortho house, "every tineen min?
utes. When lt goes against you, you shall do
thc same. And so we will go on until wo put
up, If necessary, the whole value or our pur?
chases or sales." But this did not suit,
nnd at the close of thc day they were
largely ahead, and free Hom complica?
tions. lt ls only n wonder that others
were not so prudent. Vanderbilt paid
frightfully for money, but stood at his post
nil day pledging from his immense accu?
mulation or stocks, and leuding freely lo
friends who could use them. Exchange was
offered nlmost for a song, and telegraph after
telegraph for gold was dispatched by cable. A
considerable quantity was shipped before thc
orders were countermanded. This week lLjs
being returned or sold for shipment nt a heavy
loss. Who has made nnd who has lost remains
yet to be seen. Only twp days ago, a gentle?
man arrived by steamer from langland. Ho
had sailed a week alter thc panic, under thc
confident belier Mint his.houso was safo and
thal he was n millionaire. Ho stepped ashore
to find himself a bankrupt, and tu learn that
his Ih m was settling Its liabilities nt illly cents
on tho dollar.. There arc mnny settlements
yet to bo made, anti there aro many men who
arc still entangled and who will never see
their way out If Vnntlerbll'. mnkes a Western
connection, consolid?tes his roads, carries
New York Central up ten tier cont, morey and
is enabled to "stay" with tho load he ls
carrying. Is lt any wonder that Wall street Is
weary ? Is lt not extraordinary that men v ' o
lend such a lifo are not utterly worn out and
exhausted ?
