A THIEF ARRESTED.-On the 25th of last month Officer Levy arrested a negro named Wm. Henry Fair, upon the charge of scaling $102 from Mr. David Briggs. There was no evidence against the accused and he was disc h uged. The next day he sent forty dollars of ne stolen money and some dresses, scarfs, Ac, to 'tis wife in Memphis. He was rearrested on Saturday by Officer Levy a\d will have a hearing before the Sute Court. FIRE AT BL URVILLE.- Our correspondent -'Medicos," writes that at an early hoar on Sun? day the ery*of lire alarmed the residents of Black? ville. Ii wai? soon ascertained that the bakery establishment of Mr. A. Knoph was on Ure, and the flames made such rapkl progress that lt was useless to attempt to extinguish them. The dwelling, a two-story house, was not more than fifteen or twenty feet distant, but by great effort lt was saved, although it took fire from the inten? sity of the heat. Great praise ls due the colored population, who labored manfully to rescue the property from the devouring element.. THE ECLECTIC MAGAZINE.- The October number of this valuable magazine contains a large num? ber of Interesting articles, among which may be mentioned : Roman Imperialism, by Prof. Seeley ; Spalding's Life and.Lottere of Bacon; The Two Cojjaets of the year 1868 ; a Romance of Florence, by Trollope; a New Theory or the Universe; Mr. Mill's Subjection of Women; Marshal Serrano, Regent of Spain, With a portrait; and Useless Knowledge. The literary notices and department of science and art are as fresh and thorough as usual. The agent of the Eclectic in Charleston is Mr. Fogartie, of King street. ASSIST OF THE SWINDLERS.-The swindlers, "Westlake." and "Bergman," of whose arrest here, release upan a writ or habeas corpus and escape to Wilmington, an account has been given by THE NEWS, were arrested at Wilmington Sun . day night npon the arrival of the "lightning train." Yesterday morning they*sued ont a writ or habeas corpus and were carried before Judge Russell, who refused to discharge them, bat or? dered them to be held In custody until farther Instructions could be received. Lieutenant Phllippy and Deputy Sheriff Barthel mess left for Wilmington at l o'clock yesterday. , There are warrants ont here for the arrest of -'Westlake" and "Bergman," and they may be brought back here. If not they will be carried direct to Savannah, from whence they will most probably go to the State institution at Mllledge ville. CRUMBS.-The bell-ringer who caused so much confusion during the fire Saturday night by bis carelessness, was fined $5" yesterday. Twenty-two million six hundred an* forty thousand two hundred and ninety-eight pounds of upland cotton, valued at $5,902,812, were ex? ported from Charleston to foreign countries, during the year ending September 30, 1869. There are one hundred aiul'thirty-one prisoners nco*- tn JaU, three-fourths of whom are colored. Judge Carpenter opened court at Orangeburg yesterday. During the year ending September 30, forty nine thousand eight hundred and forty-eight pounds of rice, valued at $4450, were exported from Charleston to foreign countries. ' A regular meeting of Council will be held to? night. William Fields, Jack'Jones. David Smith, John Fields and George GranaTson, negroes, arrested by Officers Lovett and Truall, and Lieutenant Phlilppy, for stealing a cart belonging to W. E. , Holmes, have been committed to Jail. Joe Smith, arrested by Officer Lovett for steal ' lng hats from Mr. C. H. Johnson, has been com? mitted to jail. Correspondents are calling the hamlet known as Brunswick, on the Georgia coast, the " City by ,: tho Sea.? A crank belonging to the hose carriage or thc i Young America Fire Company, was lost at the 1 Ure in King street about thc 8th. The finder will please return it to the company. The Painters' Union have demanded an in- ! crease or wages after Monday next. Mr. R. S. Thartn requests ns to say that he has never applied for nor received a commission as ( notary public. UNIITO STATES COURT-HON. GEO. S. BRYAN, JUDGE, PRESIDING.-Both the District and Circuit Courts were in session yesterday. DISTRICT COURT. ( The District Court was opened at io o'clock yesterday. Application of Henry C. Beard, for an appoint? ment as United Stetes Commissioner, was grated. Petition of Mrs. Angelina Garbate, for citizen? ship, was granted, she having complied with all ' the requirements of the law. In the case or Jacob Cohen, administrator or S. E. Philips, vs. Edward W. Seabrook-petition for foreclosure of mortgage or plantation known as Racoon Island-the assignee was ordered to sell , the property after due advertisement, and after paying costs, Ac, to turn as much of the balance ] os may be necessary to payment of amount re? ported to be due to Jacob Cohen over to him. In the case or the United States vs. Arthur Mor? gan-charged with a violation or the Internal reve nae laws, in that he sold whiskey barrels without -cancelling the revenue stamps upon them-the jury returned a verdict or not guilty. The United States District Attorney represented the United States and Messrs. M. P. O'Connor and G. D. Bryan the accused. The case was well argued by all parties? Final hearing or thc petitions or James A. Sim? mons and James T. Medlock, or Laurens, for final discharges in bankruptcy, were ordered to take place on the 15th or November. Final hearing or the petition or James G. Gibbes, or Columbia, for discharge in bankruptcy, was ordered at Columbia on the 25th of November. In the case of C. G. Henderson vs. Michael Fla? vin, petition for sale or choses in action, the as? signee was ordered to sell at public auction. Court then adjourned. To make this exten? sion, an old building and an oftlce at Laurens street, and two dilapidated buildings near Hasel street, will have to be torn down, and a small por? tion bf a dock lilied up.
