It ls added that thc immor? ality of the emancipated slaves has even moro to do with their increased sterility than other causes. A. Revolution on the Se? Islitnds. During the spring and curly summer tho prospect for an un us un Hy largo crop of np Iniul und sea island cotton was remarkably bright. Thc aron of lnml under cultivation had been largely increased ; fertilizers were used more generously than over before ; tho long dry season encouraged tho hopo that the caterpillar, if lt came, wottld bc power? less for harm. Tho worm, as usual, made its appearance, and swept over the cotton region ; tho destruction being sufllcient to dampen tho spirits of tho planters aud drive many of them to despair. Tho upland cot? ton was injured by tho drought more tlmu by the caterpillar; hut on tho coast and on tho islands thc ravages of thc insect, although not so disastrous tts in 18G7 and 18C8, have tempted tho planters to ubnndon altogether the cultivation of long staple cotton. They hoped to make a crop this year which should compensate them for thrco years of ruinous failure. With tho seasons no fault could be found. Thc stands of tho grow-i<g plant were as fine as could bo desired. Wit ii nil this in thoir favor, thc planters will only make ono half or a third of a crop. Tho calculation now is that tho caterpillar will show itself every year, the Injury which it docs hoing de? termined by thc character of.tho weather and tho carly or Into maturity of tho planta. Experience shows that'll short crop of sea islands does not cnusc an advance in quota? tions equivalent to thc decreased produc? tion ; and most planters know to their cost that it is often dilllcult to sell tho long cot? ton at full rates, and that a forced sale in? volves n heavy loss. Taking into account tho certainty of tho caterpillar, tho uncer? tainty of t lu- yield, tho unsatisfactory price, . and the difficulty of flaking prompt sales, thc sea island planters havo sound 'reasons for giving up, lu general, tho growth of long cotton. Intimido as is tho connection between this city and tho sea island cotton region of South Carolina, tho course of events ha3 been watched with anxious caro, and it has 8eeu with deep regret that the inexorable logic of events would lead to the relinquish- i mont of a pursuit which, in bettor timos, hud made tho planters wealthy and Charleston 1 prosperous. Thero was no immediato rem ody. Thc ramie, thc olive, and tho tropical , fruit, tho orango grove and the sheep farm, < could not soon replace tho fleecy staple of 1 tho coast But practical planters have still 1 one arrow in their quivor, and we learn thal many of tho most valuable coast- and sea island plantations will next season bo devo? ted to tho growth of the finer kinds of up- , laud cotton. Tho planters who aro the' primo movers in this revolution believe that they can make thc cultivation of upland cotton exceedingly j profitable. _ Tn thc first place it matures more rapidly than tho sea Island. This will j lessen tho dangor of injury by the caterpil- ' lar. On a plantation on ono of the islands ! a Held of long cotton was planted on . April J 16th, and a Held of upland two weeks later. Both fields wer? "?aten out" by the caterpil- ' tar. Ono bale to tho aero has already been picked from tho field of upland cotton. Thc | long cotton will not yield moro than fifty ! pounds to the acre. ,. Taking the price of I tho uplands at twenty-fire cents and of the | sea islands nt ceventy-flvo cents, the short colton will return at least $100 an aero; npd the long cotton only $37 50 un acre. .Thc gain hero is In the great rapidity with which ? thc short cotton ronches maturity in the rich lands of tho coast Omitting the caterpillar altogether, the comparison is nearly as fa- j vorable. Of long cotton the averago yield ls about one hundred pounds to the acre, and bf short cotton, on thc Bea islands, the yield is expected to be six hundred pounds ? to the acre. At tho prices beforementioned, the long cotton would produce in money $75 an nero, and tho short cotton $150 an aero. There is also tho additional advan? tage^'that with the same labor'one-third more short cotton than long cut ton can bo thor? oughly cultivated. This alone will make an important di (Turon ce in* favor of short cotton. In turning their nttcntion to upland cot? ton tho old planters count on making more money to tho acre (han hy contiihiing the growth of sea Islands. They will bo able to bring in thoir staple about September 1, and will take tho very cream of tho-prices. Be? sides this, they will havo the certainty of Belling their cotton nt any moment. By dropping a quarter or a half cent they cnn always find a purchaser, whatever tho s tuto of the market. This is, wc beliovo, a moderato Blatemont of what is expected to bo accomplished' by the chango of cultivation in the long cotton region. Tho planters who have taken tho Initiative aro men of moans and large expe? rience, and they will glvo tho now staple a thorough and searching, trial. They have figures and estimates on thoir side, und if they succeed, will have solved ono of tho most difficult problems of the day. Should theory and praetjec^b? found to agree, the sea coast and sea islands may again roll in wealth; and in their riches,' as of old, Charleston will undoubtedly, share. ., , The Malls.
