Colonel James Gardner, of thc well-known
banking house of Hoyt A (lardner,Arrived In this
city yesterday, and ls staying at the Charleston
Hotel.
NEW UNIFORM.-The contract for the new uni?
forms of tho police force was awarded yesterday.
The uniform will consist of a frock coat, vest and
pants made of navy blue cloth, and will cost
about forty dollars, for which the .members will
pay In three monthly Instalments. The cloth ls
very good, and thc uniform will doubtless bc pret?
ty and serviceable.
THE ELOPER.-Thomas J. Perdue, who cloped
with thc wife of James Scruggs, or Manchester,
Va., and was arrested here, has been released and
ls now at work In tho city. Tho woman ls here
still. Colonel Egbert, the Ohler of Police or Rich?
mond, Va., ordered Pcrduc's arrest by telegraph,
and stated that he would send a requisition ror
him. Captain Hendricks held tho accused as
long av he legally could, and, hearing nothing
further from Colonel Egbert, discharged him.
A BAD WIFE.-Catharine HolTinan, thc woman
who, when asked by thc Mayor If a young man,
a witness against her, was her husband, replied,
"Oh no, vcr honor, he's too handsome a man ror
that," got on another drunk n few days since and
carried orr some or her husband's property. He
applied to tho detective oitlcc, and Officer Lovett
was detailed to attend to thc case. He soon re?
covered thc property, and on returning lt nsked
the husband ir he did not wish his wire, round.
The husband was so ungallant and rash as to
boldly assert that he did not want her found; that
he was glad to get rid of hor. <
TUE MARINE HOSPITAL STRAPPING AFFAIR.
Yesterday the jury empanelled to hold an in?
quest over thc body or Patrick Carr, who died at
the Marine Hospital Friday morning, reassem?
bled at thc ijospiial.
Hrs. Iluist and Simons, who had made a post?
mortem examination, reported that thc deceased
came to his death from disease or tho heart, and
that the strapping he received from John Klein
would not have produced or hastened, death.
After hearing some testimony, willoh proved
that John Klein had whipped the deceased In u
most brutal manner, tho jury.returned n verdict
In effect, that thc deceased came to his death from
disease or the heart; and that on the night or thc
Mil or October he received cruel treatment at the
hands of John Klein, n nurse, temporarily em?
ployed nt the Marine Hospital. a
John Klein ls now in Jail, having Keen commit?
ted by Magistrate Mackey before the death or
Carr for committing an assault and battery upon
bim with Intent to kill.
MEETING OF THE BOARD OF TRAM.-A special
meeting of this body was held last night, the
president, II. Cobla, Esq., in thc chair.

storage of cotton and thc delivery of and pay?
ment for cotton nnd rice, was received as Infor?
mation and referred to the committee of the
Board on thc samo subject.
A communication from thc National Board of

was referred to the Executive Committee.

The president stated that thc Board would pro?

an apparently very disheartened tone of voice,
"Well, I thought ru walt until tho clerk could no

and thc Alderman "who rustled things through"
Saturday night were busily engaged In getting up
u letter for publication, detailing thc conversation
which occurred Saturday, when Messrs. Hughes
and Frazer called upon them nnd demanded their

against them, and lt ls reported that charges will
also be preferred against Messrs. Hughes and Fra?

lieved, however, that thc charges against the
Sheriff and Flour Inspector arc preferred morely
as a matter of form, and will never be heard, but
the accused ofllccrs will be kept walting ror a
hearing until their term or office expires, while
the officers pro tem. will transact thc business and
receive the pay of tho respective offices.
TUE MAILS-BAO ARRANOBICKNTS.-The Barn?
well Journal says: "The people or Barnwell aro
very much Inconvenienced by thc non-arrival or
thc Charleston malls. Charleston papers now
reach ns thc day arter their publication, and, to?
gether with important business letters, have to
lie over all night at Blackville. Wc trust some ar
rangemeat may be made by which thc malls
may bc restored to tho regular passenger train on
thc South Carolina Railroad, which connects
wit li thc dally stage to Barnwell."
We learn that the malls from Charleston arc
stopped nt Branchville, on the South Carolina
Railroad, to watt for thc through train from Ring?
ville, Instead or being carried to Augusta and
way stations on thc morning train from Charles?
ton. By this arrangement thc passengers who
started on thc samo train with thc Charleston
mall arrive at their destination. Blackville, Aiken,
or at any points between Branchville and Augusta
two or three hours before thc mall. The reason
or this ls that there ls no mall agent tor the South
Carolina train from Branchville to Augusta. One
should be appointed Immediately.

Chas. Bryan, negro, was arrested yesterday by
Officer Lovett for stealing a suitor clothes from
John Munday. ?
Mr. A. S. Johnson, agent of the London and
Lancashire Company, states that the house ul
Mr. Schneider, which was burned Sunday night,
was not Insured In his company.
The members or tho City Engineer Investigating
Committee were In session last night, reviewing
thc testimony preparatory to submitting a report.
The flues Imposed by tho Mayor yesterday
amounted to $05.
Ex-Governor Aiken was fined $25 by tho Mayor
yesterday ror not paying taxes on two horses and
t wo carriages.

A white man who stubbed an old friend four
times with a chisel, Saturduy, has repented, and

of II. Albrecht, former postmaster or Waltcrboro',
