mentioned tho arrest of-two negroes upon the
charge ol' murdering thc negro whose body was
found floating off thc Battery- a week ago.
There arc two witnesses' now in confinement,
who will probably testify to-day. Wc learn
that tho nccusctl were present wlion the hotly
of the deceased was disinterred last Friday,
and some one turned suddenly to them mid
said: "Winn did you murder tills man?"
Ono of tlie prisoners quickly replied, " At three
o'clock Friday morning."

ATTEMPTI.XO .BWINDJ.K A NBORO.-There ls a
negro man In this city named Johnson, whose
son, Ben, was, a short time since, sentenced
by aeourtln Charlotte, N. C., to twenty years'
imprisonment in the penitentiary for stenling
a watch. The circumstances connected with
the caso left no reasonable doubt In the minds of
the jury that the accused was guilty. He was
caught in thc house one night, and thc noxt
morning the watch was missed. ' However,
after he was imprisoned, tho watch was found
whore lt had been placed by thc owner for
eafe-kceping and Its hiding place forgotten.
All of this has been communicated to Johnson
by a negro in Charlotte, who offers, If twenty
five dollars be sent him, to procure the release
of Ben. Johnson, who ls an old man, wished
to send tho money, but he has boen advised to
go to tho Governor ot North Carolina and slate
thc circumstances, and ask for tho release of
bis son, which he will probably de.
THAT DEMOCRATIC POLICEMAN_At half-past '
I eleven o'clock Friday last, the committee from
tibe Loyal League called upon tho Mayor hud 1
requested bim to remove the ''Democratic '
members" of tho police force, and to put Re?
publicans in their places, assuring him that he ?

Republicans if ho did so. He assured the com?
mittee that ho would gradually relievo thc
force of tho objectionable members. The com?
mittee then retired. They were not gone
more than five minutes when three- Aldermen
called upon tho Mayor, two white and one
colored. The colored one desired thc appoint?
ment of a whlto man upon tho police , force.
One of tho whlto Aldermen assured the Mayor
thal he knew thc candidate to be a liberal?
minded man, who was willing to let every man
vote as he pleased, but he was not assured
that he was a Republican; he had once made n
good policeman, and was a number ono man.
The other Alderman was surprised to hear his
friend express his doubts;about tho candi?
date's Republican tendencies ; why ! be
was a " truly " loll " one, and should
/ have the' appointment by ail means.
'This last appeal had tho desired effect,
and tho candidato was 'announced as a

like the resolution very much so far as lt goes,
bultlioy think lt does not go far enough, and
now desire that a resolution be adopted by
Connell providing I bat any one who shall
charge less titan one dollar for sawing a cord
of wood shall be pul In Jail. It is hardly neces?
sary to state that the resolution will not be
offered.
VESSEL STRANDED.-Information lins been
rocolvcd here from Georgetown, 8. C., stating
that thc schooner Hudson, Captain Kemp, with
a cargo of naval stores, which left that place
on the 22d of September for New York, went
ashore on thc beach of North Island, north of
Georgetown bar, about the 29th of Septem?
ber. The crew were mostly sick, and the ves?
sel experiencing strong easterly gales, she
was driven ashore. It was mentioned that lier
cargo would bo saved, but while one report
stated that the vessel would be saved, another
said that she had gone to pieces.

Loss AND GAIN IN COTTON.-Some weeks
igo notice was given that Mr, John H. Holmes,
}f Boyce's wharf, one of our Charleston cotton
pokere, had procured a bale of now cotton
md had placed lt under cover in his office,
ivitb a view to test tlic loss or gain in weight.
Thc cotton was carefully weighed at 3 P. M.
on September jsittnd at 9 A. M. and 3 P. M. on
Bach following any up to-September 30. Tho
result has been given us In tabular form
through the kindness of Mr. Holmes. Tho
main results aro those: On September 6
it 3 P. M. the bale weighed 419 pounds,
weather being damp. On September 8, 0,
10 and ll tho weather was dry, and
the weight fell to 417 j pounds at 3 P. M. Sep?
tember 11th. A succession of damp days follow?
ed, and at 9 A. M. on September 18 and 21 the
bale had risen to 420J pounds; and by September
25-at 0 A. M. and 3 P. M.-the bale readied 421}
pounds, the maximum. On the lost recorded
day, at 3 P. M., tho bale, weighed 420 pounds.

grew heavier; as it rose tho cotton became
lighter. And we should say that a dif?
