Thc Payment of lac Slate Taxes. An official oironlar from Mr. Reuben Tomlinson, tho State Auditor, extending the time for the oollootlon of State taxes to the 15th of October will bo published on Friday next. This relief will be weloome te all classes of our taxpaying people, and especially to those who. are unable, whatever their wil? lingness, to pay their taxes until the busi? ness season ia fairly bogan, and an oppor? tunity bas been given them of Bending their crops to market. It la understood that for thc year ending September 1, 18G9, inoro will bo no new as? sessment of real property, which will be taxed according to the valuation completed Homo months ago. The injustico and Ine? quality of the assessment, manipulated SB it was by the State Board of Equalization, has already been exposed in the columna of every anti-Radioal papor ia the Stute". Whether we bo willing or unwilling, taxa? tion upon Ibis'basis must bo borne for one yeor more, and our people who have not yet 0 .mpleted the payment of their taxes for the year ending Septcmbor 1, 18G8, will bo called on to pay by March next the State taxes for tho year ending September 1, 1809. In this way two millions of dollars for State taxes alone will have to be paid by our people in less than nine months. Many persons oannot meet these demands upon them. Their lands and houses will go to tho hammer; but they and the men who, by straining and striving, oan pay their taxos at the appointed time, will find, in the drain lo whioh they are exposed, an argument against Radical rule more solid and potent than all the denunciations of j the theoretical politician. Somo time ago il waa shown in thia paper that, aooordlng to tho apparent letter of the tax law, the payment of the State tr,ios for 1868 could not be enforced until Marob, 1870 This point ia well put by our contemporary, the Courier, in a recent arti? cle; but we oannot advise the taxpayers of | the State to endeavor lo postpone, by lill g ilion, the fulfilment of their tax obliga? tions. The different counties have paid as promptly as they oould the t&xeB assessed upon thom. There ia no talk of legal or musoular resistance lo the law as construed by tho State officials. Where the taxes are unpaid, it ia beoause the trxpayers have beeu unable or have had no opportunity of paying them; and at this late day it woyld ill become us lo go Into the courts for a re? dress thal may most surely be obtained in the great court, whose jury is the people of the State. What we bavo to do Is to pay the State taxes as well as we may, and to remember, whenever the shoe pi?ones, that m J ouiy remedy for ?ll our grievances is an anti-Radioal viotory in the elections of 'the ooming year. The Gold Gambling on uiu?ic Friday, An A'sooiated Press telegram, published thia morning, oontains the rather startling newe that the Bank of New York has con? sented to act aa the Clearing House for the gold transactions of Black Friday on the basis of 185 for gold. Thia, If true, oan only mean that the gold infiition of Friday last ia very properly regarded as a sheer dwindle, and that an arbitrary rate has been fixed at whioh A settlement must be made of all the transactions of the day. It is evident1 that only a little legitimate business waa transacted. While ono bold hull was yelling for gold at 150, others, more bold, were offering 165 and 160. There was no more regularity in the quota? tions than there is in the fall of a die; and while the ring were offering to bay mil? lions at twenty and thirty per cent, more than Its actual value, they who had small paroels ol the coin to sell found it difficult to obtain a purchaser The whola .opera lion was an attempt to gamble on a huge scale at the eost of the trade and commerce of the cou ury. The gold gamblers did mora than riek their own fortunes. By their unscrupulous manoeuvring they de? ranged, oar whole mercantile system; and nntil the bataneo bas been struck, and the wreok cleared away, it will be diffioult to effect the simplest mer. oantile transaction. Foreign exchange hu been unsaleable for seme days, and the Gold Board may rely on having the hearty support of the more antila community in any measures whioh may be neoeaaary to mark I their reprobation of one of the grandest" frauds of the age. Gold gambling aa it waa carried on in New York last week is a grave j public ?rime, and, whatever the laxity of j Wall street morality, we are led to hope that both bulls and bears will now bo taught a leeson that they will net soon for? got. Ae we said before, the pub Ho demand an immediate settlement of the transactions of 1 Friday, and there is tome reason fdr be lievlog that the very excess bf the evil un? der whioh we labor m ay bo tho means of I preventing a r scurr enc s of similar troubles I in the future. Gambling in gold cannot, perhaps, be prevented by legislative enact m ?tit; but a contemplation of onr hasardons monetary eondilioa, and of the disturbing power of a ring of greedy capitalise, may lead th? people to werk more ateadlly fer av j return to . atabla ead uniform eur re acy.
