ternoon tho body of a negro roan wt* observed
float IHR in tho Ash loy River, noar tho bathing
honse, al tho Sooth Rettery. It waa hauled j
upon tho shore and tho Coronor notified. Ho
summoned a jnr., at once, and hold an inquest.
Tbore was no testimony, and although tho
body was examined by a numbor of persons,
no ooo recognized it. After vlowing tho body
and waiting some time to ascertain whothor
tho body could be recognised, or any testimony
could bo prodncod, to throw somo light upon
tho transaction, tho jury rendorod a vordiot, in
eubstanoe, that the deooasod had boen mur?
dered by a party or part ?os to the jury un?
known. Tho general condition of tbo body
renderod Re speody burial necessary, and the
Coroner, although desiring to koop it, with
tho hope that it might bo identified, folt com
polled to order ita burial.
Tho body, when found, had boen in the wator
about twenty-four hours. There wan nothing
upon it bntan old tattered, coat. It was horri?
bly manglod. Thoro wae a large, doop gash
upon the back of the head, which WBB nearly
split in two. On tho right side of tho nook ,
were two stabs mad? with a knife Th'oso
wounds oxtoudod downward and were about
aix inohea deop. There, was..also a largo, deep,
gash in the right hip, and in otbor portions of
the body numerous bruises. The wounds on
Ibo hoad and hip wero doubtless indicted with
any axo or a boo. Any ono of tho wounds
would havo caused' doatb. The body had
floated down tho Ashloy Uiver with tho ebb
tide. It is believed that tho murder was com?
mitted in tho uppor portion of tho city, and
then thrown into tho rivor. Who tho deceased
was, wbo wta tho murderer, and whore the
murder was committed, aro yet to bo ascer?
tained, and there seems tb be no clue that will
lead to tho obtaining of tho desired informa?
tion. The deceased was apparently1 about
thirty years of age.
