The Apr.roaching state Elections. Again the two great parties of the North are making ready for a desperate struggle Pennsylvania and Ohio are to speak on Tuesday, the 12th of October, and, undia mayed by previous reverses, the Democraoy have entered the canvass with spirit and confidence. Io each State a Governor is to be chosen. In Pennsylvania John W.Geary, the present incumbent, is a candidate for re-eleotion, his competitor being Asa Packer, the Democratic candidate. The vote will pro? bably be light as compared with that of last year, at whioh time the State polled a largor vote than ever before. Governor G--ary was elected in 1866 by a majority of 17 178. in a total vote of 597,870. In 1867. at an election for Janice of the Suprema Court, the total vote wat 534.675, and the m. ?j or ity for the D moj-a ic c .niid ite 927 At tho election for Auditor-General, lani Ocio ber, the total vote reached the unprece? dentedly high figure of 653,15.3. and the Republican maj >nty was9077. Three weeks later, at the Presidential election, there were polled 655 662 votes, ouf of which Grant received a majority of 28 898 It will thus be seen that the D"moor..oy will have to overcome an average Republican m j or i ty of 13,704 at the last four elec tions. lu Ohio, George H. Pendleton is the D mooratlo candidate for Governor, in opposition to Governor Haye, the pre? sent incumbent. The maia' interest ia the contest in Ohio, \a from the fact that Mr Pendleton is regarded as the originator.and special adyooate of paving the national debt ia greenbacks, and, ina* moen as hellas revived this isnue quite re. lently, his election will be claimed ss the adornment by his own State of his pet heory. Two years ago Governor H*ys vas eleoted by a small nffjortiy of 2983, tn total vote of 484,227. Lut fall, at the State election, 616,579 votes were polled, if wnioh the Republican oiodidate for Sec? retary of State obtained a majority of 17,372, and three weeks later Grant carried the State by 40,617 majority, the total vote of the State being 519,829. Comparing the rotes at these several elections, it is ascer? tained that the average Republican ma? jority was 20,324, which Mr. Pendleton has to overcome to be the next Governor of Ohio. The alarm which the Republicans exhibit lest they lose these great States, notwith? standing the heavy odds in their favor with whioh they enter the election, affords their opponent* just ground for encourage' ment and hope. Coffee's Chance to go to Congress-A Bogle Blast from Parson Cain. "Who shall go to Congress in the stead of the Hon. C. C. Bowen?" asks onr black prophet, the Rev. R. H. Cain, in the last issue of that genuine and outspoken organ of the Republicans of South Carolina-the Missionary Record. He solves the riddle in words whioh, to carpet-bagger and soallawag alike, must read like the handwriting on the wall. It is certainly very early, he remarks, to agitate . the question, but he finds sufficient justifi? cation in his anxiety to balk "the hungry devils who never tire*' in the quest of offi? cial plunder. A V9ry proper and praise? worthy motive we 'admit; and wc hold him fully excused for what might seem undue haste, on his part, in plunging the commu? nity into the hurly-burly of an angry and excited canvass. We will let the prophet Cain speak for himself as to the complexion, moral, politioal and physical, of the coming Congressman. "We do not know," ho says, "who the lucky chap may be; but one thing is protty certain, that the negro proposes to send a true repre? sentative of his race, to represent his interests at the next election for Congressman. These long, lank, sharp-nosed genti may pre? pare for defeat. They will have to take a book Hat till somebody else has bad a chance. The colored people have been sold often enongh, and they have come to the conclusion that these adoenturers with white faces and black hearts shall not any longer belie them and fat? ten off their stupidity. We venture to say no one of these pretending scamps wilt ever go to Washington to misrepresent them again.
