Muon may even now bo done towards the accomplishment of this result. But our people must shake off the apathy wb->h, in too many cases, they have manifested in regard to local contests of seemingly trivial interest. No opportu? nity must be lost to elect an honest and re? spectable maa to any office, however petty, lhat may become Tac int; nor ought an elec? tion, under any circumstances, to be allow? ed to go by default ia favor of a Radical candidate. Let our friends io every town? ship and neighborhood maintain their or? ganization with spirit, or revive it if it has ceased to exist. Let them see to it that no efforts are spared to plaoe thtir local gov? ernments in the hands of men of capacity and character, so that aa anti-Radical ele? ment may be introduced into our civil ma shiaery. He ex? ultingly tells us that the entire ooast line of the United States, exclusive of Alaska, is 10,000 miles, while the coast line of Alaska alone, including the islands, is 26,000 miles. The entire land area is 677,890 statute square miles. Ia so vast a region the climate is of course variable; but he thinks that "he mast be a fastidi?os "person who complains of climates io "which, while the eagle delights to soar, "the hamming bird does aot disdain to "flatter." He goes into raptores over the frequent and magnificent displays of the rainbow and the aurora. If, after hear? ing so glowing a description of their latest territorial acquisition the American people shall fail to recognize the debt of thanks tney owe to the statesman whose grasping genios has made this Liad of Promise their owa, it will be bat oae more conspicuous example of the proverbial ingratitude of Repoblios. The patentee claims the power to transmit mes? sages tea times as rapidly aa an expert penman caa write, and to do as muoh busi less over one wire as can be done over tea irires by the Morse system of transmission Che rates contemplated are one tent per nord for all distances, the cheapness of rbioh ooold not fail to draw from the mails il business correspondence, as well as aooh of a private character that cannot fford to wait for postal transmission. GENERAL lox JORDAN, of whom people in Charleston cherish recollections a good deal more lively than agreeable, seems to be cutting quite a figure in his new role of Cuban liberator. He has addressed "io the people of the United States," in behalf of the revolutionists, au appeal, written in that infiated and frothy style which marked his official papers while chief of staff, and by which so much undeserved ridicule was brought upon the unconscious Beauregard. Cuba, he tells us, does not need men, though veterans would be welcome to a country the difficulties and dangers of which have been much exaggerated. She does need, however, shoes, olothing and medicines. ?Hundreds of brave men," he writes, "are standing in my sight almost "naked;" and of the Cubans, he says that men more willing to become soldiers he never saw. This is what Jordan thinks of the Cubans. We should like to hear what the Cubans think of Jordan. - Tn New York Tribune has unearthed a conspiracy between certain financiers in that oity and European capitalists to buy and withdraw from use thirty millions of gold, with intent to compel those who must pay gold at the customhouse or elsewhere to buy of them at exorbitant rates.
