Tho Ncwbcrry Immigration Society ta
sliil actively pushing forward the important
work which it inaugurated last year with
bo much succosh. A letter from Mr. T. S.
Boinest, tho president Of the sooicly, an
nounces that it has already brought in
about three hundred immigrants, the largo
mojorily of whom have proved excellent
laborers. Iu view of tho probable scarcity
of labor next year, tho sooiety anticipates
more orders for immigrants than it will be
able to fill. ThoBo who wish to obtain
laborers through this channel are therefore
urged to file their orders as soon as possi
ble. The Booioty'b agont will go to Cnstlo
Qarden early in November and remain
tbere until near the end of December, and
secure all the laborers who can be induoed
to come South; and these will be given to
parlies who have ordered, tho operations of
the sooiety being conducted upon the "first
oome?firat served" principle. It is hoped
that some of the immigrants will be sent on
as early as the middle of November, eo as
to be of service in securing the cotton crop.
Negotiations are now in progress to induce
all the railroads in tho State to transport
immigrants at reduced rates. God speed

lusty black oarsmen of our sea islands to
show what they could do in one of their
own peouliar raon-boatB in a contest of
power, enduranoo and akili, wilh tbe oraok
orews who claim to represent in its perfec
tion the rowing science of the two conti
nents. Wo know that the trained boatmen
of the plantations, whose lives had been
spent on the water, had acquired n style of
rowing which, previous to tho war, had been
tbe wonder acd admiration of all strangers
who wcro competent to judge of such mat
ters, and wo had hoped that no mawkish
prejudioe as to "race, color or previous oon
"dition" would -have denied to "the man
"and brother" tho ohanoe to assert his
olaim to the ohampionship of the oar. Oar
proposition was reproduoed in the North
ern papers with various commenta; but
nothing ever oame of it, and no invitation
was extended to Cnffee to tako part in the
Great Race. We understand, however, that
a Northorn gentleman of means, who is
extensively engaged in planting on the sea
islands, struok with the remarkable speed
which he saw attained by sime of the ne
gro boatmen in his employ,' has now deter
mined to extend in their behalf to the row
ing olubs of the world a challenge to an
other grand contest. Wo trust that the

this time, meet wilh a moro cordial wel
come.
