By a special telegram to Tun NEWS, pub? lished in another oolumn, it appears that the total colt on crop of 1808-'69, according to tho New Yotk Shipping and Commercial List, is 2,200,657 balea. This statement will, we are miro, greatly surprise all who are interested in our great staple, as it falls far below the lowest estimate up to the present time by those who are accustomed to give mu ah attention to cotton statietios. The New York Shipping and Commercial Lint's Crop Statements have for many years been accepted as the authority by whioh the ac? tual amount of the orop should be deter? mined, and we do not desire prematurely to question the oorreolness of its figures in the present instanee. We feol bound to say, however, that muon dissatisfaction waa expressed last year, at the unusual and large additions made by the Shipping List to the aoiual reoeipta at the ports, and by whioh the orop of 1807- 68 waa made largely to exec. A the estimates of other well in? formed authorities It seems passing strange that tb? Hame journal should, this year, have made the crop so muoh smaller than everybody antioipated. We shall await the receipt of the full details of the estimate, and may have more to say apon the aub jeot, should we see reasonable cause to doubt their accuracy. Tbe I,uat Rxeentive Infamy. Ooo night ia November last, a deliberate and oowardly murder took plaoe about three miles from Laureneville, which, owing to tho blameless oharaoter of the viotim, a? well as the exeeptional brutality of the deed, aent H thrill of horror through the communi? ty of L lorens and the adjoining oounties. Dr. E. Clinton Shell, a young physician of the highest promise, while quietly riding in the publia road, accompanied by three other gentlemen, waa suddenly fired upon by par ties in ambush. Dr. Shell fell mortally wounded. Although diligent eearoh ?aa at once made for the murderers, no clue to their identity could be obtained; and day?, and weeks, and months elapsed, and the orime remained still a mystery. Early in June, however, a negro named George Simpson, in a confidential talk with another negro, confessed bis participation in the bloody deed, and revealed the o i rou m alances nader whioh it was committed. Ao cording to his statement, toe party consist? ed of fifteen blacks, who left the village early in tba night, and throagh fields and by-paths betook themselea to the point of rendel vous, whioh waa at the forka af the Greenville and Tumbling 6 boals roads. Here they lay In wait until Dr. Shell and hiafrienda had reached that point, when the guns were fired, wl'h the result Already stated. As it happened, this conversation waa over? heard by respsoiabte gentlemen, upon whose testimony, oorroborated by strong ci rc um staniial evidence. Simpson waa convlced of murder in the first degree. The jury in the ease waa oompoaed of whites and blacks, and their verdict waa rendered after only a few minutes' deliberation. The oaae, in {aol, was BO olear that the prisoner's onun - sel scarcely attempted to disprove the obarge ihat Simpson waa concerned in the killing, but rested their defenee upon the plea that it was apolitical atiattination, and not murder. Judge Vernon, who tried tbe oaae, sentenced the prisoner to be hang oa the third Friday ia thia month. Since hla conviction, Simpson h aa on two occasions admitted that he waa the party that murdered Dr Shell. But the murder er ia a eoal bleak negro and a Radical voter, while kia victim waa.a hlgklv reapeo?able aad inoffensive white Baan. Third Farly" I- Im % The views of oar contemporaries of tho 3tate press on tho question of tho formation of a "Third Party," have now been protty thoroughly ventilate J, and it is safo to say .bat the movement bas been effectually throttled at its birth. This is reluctantly admitted even by the 'Orangeburg NOWB, a paper whioh, whilo upholding Republioau principles, has not hesitated to express its unqualified diBgust at the rottenness and rasoallty whioh pervade Ibo Radloal party Organization in our State. Heretofore it bas been rather sanguine in regard to the "Third Party" project; but in ita last Issue ina leader headed "Tho End of the Whole "Matter," it reviews the attitude of the press of the State, and wisely and grace? fully oonoludes to give up the whole soheme as impraolioable. It says : "THE Cn AHLKB "T05 NKWB and Columbia Pheonix, proba "bly the leading papers of South Carolina, "on aooount of their large oirculatlon and "the faot of their being published at tho "two great m?tropoles of the State, have "both 'trimmed their sails' somewhat to "moot the wind; but thoy both advooate tho "mainlenaooe and reorganisation of lite "Demooratio party." It then goes on to admit that the State papera generally ?oho the opinions of TUB Cn AIILESTOM NEWS, in favor of the Democracy, but consoles itself with observing the general disposition whioh they evince lo liberalize the platform of their party, especially in the recognition of the accomplished faots of reconstruction. Thia disposition it nat?a as a good sign. Repeating its declaration that the Republi? can party in South Carolina "is not respec? table," it oponly expresses the "hope that "the next eleolion will result in the re? demption of tho State out of tho banda of 1 "the men who have been lured here for "booty, back into tho kcoping of her eons." It adds : "Is not thia a 'sonsummation devoutly to bo wishod?' Yes 1 and it may be realized. We shall not atleklo for a name when so groat a question is at stako. THE C'HABT,P.HTO;< NEWS, in a lato issue, would divido tho state into two groat partios, 'Radica's and Auti-ltadicala.' There is reason and a sound polioy in this. Bo this tho division, and lot us array oursolvea for tho conflict. Bury deep in tho past tbo prejudices against oar change, sod turn tho blighting influouco of our clroumstanooa into good. Do this and your aotious will savo your State." Wo cordially weloome tho Orangeburg News into the ranks of the Anti Radical party. Pasir Warning. The Uuionville Times talks right out in meeting on the subject of the proposed re? pudiation by the while people of the State of all responsibility ia the future for the outrageous debt which a wasteful and dis? honest administration, backed by a venal and corrupt Legislature, is recklessly piling up on the backs of the taxpayers of South Carolina. Ia order that the capitalists of the North may have an opportunity to know how our people feel and talk about tho South Carolina bonds, alroady far too plen? tiful, and the issue of whioh there is rea? son to fear bas only began, we reproduce the timely aad temperate article of oar Unionvilla contemporary : "The ll un nb I ic an party roprcsouta a very em%ll injilluui of iUo t&xiayora, alie) the mem? bers of that party care very littlo bow'rnuoh taxes aro extorted from Ibo pursos of those whom thoy bave not thc bonor to rooroaent. And now we hoar that Quorn or Scott ts pre? pared to recommend to tho coming session of tho Legislature an appropriation of moi.oy say ten militons of dollars-to oarry out a measure of tuternal improvement in whioh ho baa largely invest od - niuo millions to comploto the work, and ono million to buy t'?e votes necessary to obtain the appropriation. Wo hope those things aro not so, and that Veritas will promptly deny them. But the people dj behove these charges, and it ts evon suspeotod that the contractors believe them too. If an additional ten millions ot dollars aro pat apea the market, aa the guaraateed bonds of aa in? complete railroad, the total acoumulated bond? ed debt of South Carolina, during the eighteen months of Re pub boan rate, wdl approximate flfteea million of dollars, with aa annual inter? est thereon of over one mi.lion dollars. "Can we stand it ? Not well. Can wa avert it? Our people have no money for State bonds. The Stato bonds will be sold on Wall-street.
