on the opposite side of the river in Maine the
the same thing in every respect would cost

-The baby market in New lork is active,
judging by the advertisements of that trade in
.the city papers, which show a demand and
supply of three or four dozen per week. The
adoption, or more literally the Bale, of inno?
cents has attained the dignity of a regular
business, supporting a number of establish?
ments and many private speculators. Strictly
speaking, it cannot be classed as a productive
.industry, since the producers of the commodi?
ty clo not reap the profits, those belonging
entirely to tho "female physician'" who man?
ages the e?l?. The supply is obtained from
those mothers who have becomo such
"ontsid? the conventional rules," as Mrs.
Stanton phrases it, and the demand is found
among thoso whoso moans and circumstances
?M favorable, but to whom nature is not be?
nignant. The former are usually anxious to
dispose of their encumbrances, and the latter
to obtain each ornaments of the household by
purchase if no other moans are possible. And
in this they h ive the advantage of wives osten?
sibly mere favored, since the baby mart allows
of a wido Roleotion, in which preferences as to
.sex. complexion, &*& and disposition may ia
.great measure be consulted. Some pureba- j
sera prefer brunettes, others blondes, and the
agents advertise their merchandise in assorted
parcels. Blondes rule highest at present, a
first-class specimen, with blue eyes, bringing
one hnndred dollars.

Tlae lout Exeoey^jve Infamy.
One night in November last, a deliberate
and cowardly murder took place about
three miles from Laurensville, whioh, owing
to the blameless character of the victim, a<
well as the exceptional brutality of the deed,
sent a thrill of horror through the communi?
ty of Laurens and the adjoining counties.
Dr E. Clinton Shell, a young physician of
the highest promise, waite quietly ridingvjko
the publie road, accompanied by three otb er
gentlemen, was soddenly fired upon by par
ties ia; ambush. Dr. Shell fell mortally
wounded. Although diligent search was at
once made for the murderers, no cloe to
their identity could be obtained; and dayn,
and weeks, and months elapsed, end the
orime remained still a mystery. Early in
Jnne, however, a negro nam id George
Simpson, in a confidential talk with another
negrofskponfeeaed hie participation in the
bloody aWd, and revealed the oironm
stances ander wbioh it wes committed. Ao
o irding to his statement, tSe party consist?
ed of fifteen blacks, who left the village
early ia the night, and through fields and
by paths betook themseles to the point of
rendezvous, whioh WM at the forks of the
Greenville and Tumbling Shoals roads. Here
they lay in wait until Dr. Shell and his friends
bad reaohed that point, when the guan
were fired, with the result already stated.
As it happened, this conversai ion was over?
heard by respetable gentlemen, upon whose
testimony, corroborated by strong circum?
stantial evidence, Simpson WM convie ed of j
murder io the tiret degree The jury in tbe
oa?e waa* composed of whites and bUcki.
?nd their verdict was rendered after only a
few minutes' deliberation. The case, in
fad, was so olear that the prisoner's ooun
nel eotroely attempted to disprove the
oharge that Simpsou was concerned iu tbe
killing, but rested their defeiian upon the
plea that it wm apolitical attastination, timi
not murder. Ju<ig- Vernon, who tried the
aase, sentenced the prisoner to be hung on
the third Friday in this month.
8inee his conviction, Simpson has on two
occasions admitted that he was the party
tbat murdered Dr Shell. But the murder
sr is a coal black negro and a Radical voter,
while his victim was a highlv respectable
and inoffensive white man. Our readers,
therefore, will not be surprised to hear that

The "Third Party" Flaw*.
The views of our contemporaries oM
State press on the question of the formati
of a "Third Party," have now been pre!
thoroughly ventilated, and it is safe to s
that the movement has been effectual
throttled at its birth. This is reluotanl
admitted even by the Ofangeburg News,
paper whioh, while upholding Republic
principles, has not hesitated to express
unqualified disgust at the rottenness a:
rascality whioh pervade the Radical par
organization in onr State. Heretofore
has been rather sanguine in regard to t

Carolina. In order that the capitalists 0
the North may have an opportunity to knot
how our people feel and talk about th
South Carolina bonds, already far too plen

"Concerning our State officials, there ?t<
painful rumors; and these rumors are gone'
rally believed. Wo havo heard of private en?
terprises being abandoned, from aa uraocc
that no charter of a joint-stock company could
he obtained from the South Carolina Legisla?
ture, without money sufficient to pay the mem?
bers of that body for their votes. We have
heard Governor Scott charged with boing indi?
vidually interested in measures which he offi?
cially commended to the Legislature. We have
heard that tho Chatham Railroad, and the
Greenville and Columbia Railroad, and the
Savannah and Charleston Railroad, had suc?
ceeded in having their rcs poet ivo bills passed
by'tbe freo us? of mo any distributed among
the Republican members of that high body.
And now we hoax that Governor Scott is pre?
pared to recommend to the coming' session of
Iho Legislature au appropriation of monoy
say ten millions of dollars-I o carry oat' a
measure of internal improvement in whioh ho
has largely invesied-nine millions to complete
the work, and one million to buy tho votes
necessary to obtain the appropriation. We
hope these things are not so, and th: t Veritas
will promptly deny them. But the people do
believe these charges, and it is even suspected
that the contractors believe them too. If an
additional ten millions of dollars aro put upi n
the market, as the guaranteed bonds ot an in?
complete railroad, the total accumulated bond?
ed debt of South Carolina, daring the eighteen
months of Republican rule, will approximate
fifteen million of dollars, with an annual inter?
est thereon of over one million dollars.
"Can wo stand it ? Not well. Can wo avert
it? Our people have no money for State bonds.
The State bonds will be sold on Wall-street.
Wall-street believes to-day that a few more
years will put every Southern State back under
tbe control of Southern white men. These
bonds must be paid then-so Wallstreet
thinks-sy appropriations made by Southern
wbito men. Well now. we ask Southern white
mon to step forward and protest against tuoir
liability to pay bonds guaranteed at the in?
stance of a Governor wno ia individually inter

disreputable legislators as tho piiuo of their

even the financial ability of that rising finan?

New York, will be ablo to put them above
