WHO AMD WHAT HS IS I.
Aaron Logan is a colored man, about twen?
ty-eight years of age, and black aa thu ace of
spades. There ia an oiliness in his mannor
whioh is very taking on drat acquaintance,
and as he has a good memory and can spent
constitutions and orations by the hour, ho is
a small deity among the negroos in St.
Thomas' and the adjoining parishes. Thora
he la Sir Oracle, and rulos tho colorad
pooplo with autocratic sway; not in the in?
terests of poace, but for tho purposo of ox
citing an eternal round of anger and irrita?
tion. Ono pago in his history IB hi? conduot
when oommiBsiouor of registration in thc fall
of 1869. Then, by his inoondiary language
and conduct, ho drove the colora d people into
opon riot ; so much so that troops wero sent by
General Clilz to Mount Ploasaut to qulot thc
disturbance. Not long afterward he was guilty
of a small-sized villany for which he was
lUPUISOMED IN roar MACON,
Where ho amused himself by breaking stones.
Tho why and wherefore aro these: Logan ar?
rested a goatlcman named Fraser on the
chargo that ho had proronted tho nogroex
from voting. At night air. Fraser was dragged
by a squad of armed negroes across thc coun?
try to Charleston, boin:; talton off the road
hera and there by his captors to' be exhibited
to the negroes on the different places near to
whioh they passed. As soon as tho party
reached Charleston Ur. Fraser was released,
bnt wo do not know that he has yet reooverod
from the fatigues of that fearful night. Logan
waa
TRIED BT MILITARY COMMISSION
And sentenced to two years' imprisonment,
which afterward was commuted to six months.
This term he pasaod in Fort Macon, as already
stated. Logan would bavo boon in the Legis?
lature, bat for his imprisonment. The jail and
tho gallows in this way reduoe the supply of
raw material in a very unwarrantable manner.
ANOTHER FREAK.
Wo aro also told that Logan bought a tract
of land whioh he was to hold in trust for some
colored people. But Logan was sharp. He
had tho titloa drawn in bis own name, and now
this very land is soon to be sold by the sheriff
for Logan's private debts. The doluded colored
peoplo will, we fear, have no redress.
THE NEXT CAPES.
Logan wa? quiot for awhilo, and being an
eminently proper person, was appointed a ma?
gistrate. Then, indeed, he had the parish un?
der bis control, as soon became evident. Fre?
quently ho gathers tbs colored people in crowds
of four bnndrod and Ovo handred, whom ho en?
tertains with bis denunciation of the whites.
In fact, ho has had his own way in everything.
8ome time ago Mr. L. P. Bmith, a planter in
Christ Church Parish, had so mo trouble with
a negro woman named Hannah Doveaux, whioh
sndod in Hannah being charged with assault
and battery. The oa?o wan (rlod belora Magis?
trate Lucas, and the woman committed in de?
fault of bail. Logan thon took the matter in
hand, suod ont a writ of habeas corpus, when
ao one knew what was going on, and set Han?
nah free. *
TUB NEXT DEVILTRY.
In July last a colored mau wont to Mr, L.
P. Smith, who was then on his plantation, and
said bo had ordors to arrest him. Mr. Smith
is'.ied what his warrant was. The colored man
mawed that "ho did nol know what the war?
rant was," but ho would go and find out. No?
thing more was heard of tho affair until Thurs
lay last, when it came to a head.
FOUR NEGROES ABBEST A WHITE HAN.

ng that they had orders from Magistrate Logan
;o ascertain tho boBinesa of overy one whom
hey saw. Brown told tbem where he was go?

tion. What was the purpose of tb ese armed
nen, in prowling at night around Mr. Smith's
)lantatlon, oan easily be guessed by the light
>f subsequent events. Oo the following mora?
ng, the same four negroes, armed to tbe testb,
arrested Mr. Smith and took him before Logan,
?ho was nins milos off.
