CHARLESTON.
SATURDAY MORNING, SB PT. 4, 1869.
Tait) Ku>Klux-KlBn.
About twelve mouths ago the Presiden?
tial eleotion was drawing nigh, and all good
Radicals busied themselves in dovlsing a
tale of rebel horror which might terrify the
sober-aides of the North into voting for
Grant-the Man of Peace. With an indus?
try which gave honorable proof tba' they
had not exhausted all their strength in con?
triving means of growing rapidly rioh, the
South Carolina Radioals rolled out yard
after yard of "rebel murders" and ''rebel
"atroolties," and by the time that the oleo
lions wore at hand at least two miles of
printed lies had been scattered over the
Union. Our Ohio Governor wa snot back?
ward in coming forward in bia peculiar
line, and rolled ont a soore of letters and
proclamations to'-provo that the South Car?
olina Democracy wem on thc point of swal?
lowing, without sal??LR, K Soott and the
universal Tankoe nation. The South Car?
olina rebels were not yet ready to make a
meal of the white Radioals; but our weak
kneed Governor was badly soared, all the
same, believing that his ears and hide, as
well as oarpet bag, were in imminent dan?
ger. AB Soott raved, our people laughed
ha I ha 1 The more Soott brayed the more
they oraoked their sides. But not until the
elections were over, did the Ohio Governor
oeaso his aries. Then, at last, peace was
permitted to reign throughout the land.
For many months we have been allowed
to remain quiet. There is, however, some
danger that the Radicals may be flung in
Pennsylvania and-horrible to Bay 1-in
"0nib. And now does the Radical chieftain
couch his pen and amble to the rescue
From his crest wave bonds and bills, and '
on bis azure shield is a pouch Or-false her
aldry, but true carpet buggery. Strange to
say, he does not himself enter the lists,
gaily caparisoned though he be. The King
of i he Carpet baggers has for his beBt friend
a New England skip jack, who is allowed to
use all the weapons in the armory of his
| lord.
Well I the one-sided combat has began,
and the New Englander oalls to his aid the
old familiars-Ku Klux and Bug-a-Boo
who did good servios a few months ago.
This time thoy come in a new dress, appear?
ing as tho heroes of miraole plays, in whioh
are shown the "vioesof the rebel" and "the
"virtue of tho Oirpet bigger." One of
these plays eame off but two days sinoe.

These two mi rael? plays, with variations,
form the vihoto stock in trado of the King
of the Carpet-baggers and the ekip jaok
New Englanders. There aro but two dishes
of horrors, and upon these tho Radioals
must feast daily; now roast, now boiled, now
broiled, now fried, now stewed. This is not
fair on tho part of Now England. Tho
same. ingonuity which at home gave the
world wooden nutmegs, Feejee Mermaids
and the Wooley Horse, ought to bo able to
give the' South Carolina Radioali something
fresher than theso eternal variations on
Nimble Niok of Nc wherry and the Ku-Klux
Klan.
Tn BY have bright Radicals in Union
County. The Uaionville Times says that
H. W. Dunoan, the Radioal senator from
Union, also census-taker and magistrate,
.baa filled out a model subpoona. It is head?
ed "union County" and addressed to "any
Lawful officer." The witness ?3 summoned
to appear at the ?cur often oak" iu a oer
tain oase in which "tho Townoonoil oon
sernd Plaintiff, against is S. W. Dupree De?
fendant; is Townoonoil." The italics in tho
last sentence indicate printed words in the

"and uniform ourrenoy. Lot them nlono
"until our greatest evil is removed."
Wo reply that TUB Cn ABLESTON NEWS has
never attempted to make these questions
the turning point in our State canvass.
The platform of this paper, in all Slate
questions, is ANTI RADICALISM, pure and
simple.
IN ANSWER to a correspondent we beg to
say that we presumo that the authority of |
the Treasurer of Colleton County "to ool
"leot a capitation tax" is given him by sec?
tion 43 of the Tax law, whioh is as follows :
"Them shall bo assessed on all taxable polls
in the State an annual tax of ono dollar on
each poll, the proco eda of whioh tax shall bo
applied solely to ecucntiona! purposes."
Tax Radioal rumor that there was dan.
ger of an outbreak in Anderson is, as wo
supposed, wholly false. The Intelligencer j
Bays there has been no broach of the peaoe
and no die turban o a, beyond what waa caused
by the howling of drunken negroes during
the session of the Investigating Committee.
----
Ona Colleton correspondent reports that j
three murders by negroes have taken place
in a short time, and that there have been
threo inaendiary fires in Wallerboro' in one
woek. Perhaps the Radioals will oall these
Demooratio outrages !
THC Phoenix says : "The buildings whioh
