The first bag of tbe new crop of long staple ,
cotton that has reached here thia season carno

growth, and was consigned to Messrs. W B.
Williams & Bom It was shipped by James
Beattie, from Gainesville. Fla., seventeen days
earlier than tbe first shipment to Charleston

TVESEETEHS.-On Saturday last, three sea?
men, respectively named Peter Antonio, John
Saunders and Emanuel Flores, were arr steel
upon A warrant inned by Magistrate Mackey,
charging them with desertion. The testimony
showed that at nine o'clock, 8?ti ""ay morn
ring, they had signed articles on the schooner
Wsnsta, and two hours later signed articles on
the British bark Minnie. Tbe magistrate bad
?hem sent Aboard the Wsnsta.
SELLING sr SAMPLE. - Mr. C. Fores, of the
firm of CsUegas, Son <k Fores, was arraigned
before the Mayor Saturday morning, to answer
tho charge of selling cigars without a liceu-e.
From the testimony, it anpears that the firm
regularly payB the taxes upon sales; that Mr.
Fores took a box Of cigars as a sam?le, sud
carried it to on? or two cigar booses, and so?
licited orten. Mr. Fores was discharged im?
mediately after his statement was made.
SOMEWHAT SLOW.-A negro woman, on Satur?
day, presented to s magistrate an order from
the Freedmen's Bureau, dated two years sgo,
for her husband to take care of their ctild.
and requested the magistrate to have the
order enforced. When she was made to under?
stand that che Bureau bsd rotted to nieces,
and the order was ss worthless now as that
costly piece of furniture had always been, her
indignation knew no boanda. If shs met her
husband while in ?hst mood, he has our
sympathy._ ,v

James H. Taylor, Esq., of Messrs. Qeorgs
W. Wilhams & Co., has Just returned
from sn extensive tour through the North?
western States. He states that the population
and wealth of that section are developing
with unexampled rapidity. W. E. Byan, Esq.,
has aJjO gotten back from the Virginia Springs.
CiuxL TBSATKENT.-There was considerable
excite lent on Queen-street Saturday morning,
occasioned by the appearance of a little white
boy, perfectly nssed and with bis bands tied,
running down the street. He sought shelter ,
in a store, and stated that? bis uncle. Slattery j
by aime, bad beaten him in s most inhuman
manner. Slattery was arrested upon s war?
rant issued by Magistrate Mackey, and when
before him stated that the boy had misbehav?
ed Sud he bsd to whip bim. The magistrate,
after admonishing the boy to behave h mae f
hereafter, and the uncle to refrain from further
cruel Ipeatment, dismissed the case.
MATOB'S Cowar.-The following cases were
disposed of ai the Mayor's Court - Saturday
morning:
Robert Gaillard; colored, charged with Itx
ceny ?nd vagrancy, was sentenced to labor

Mary Jane Lesby was op for being drunk
and disorderly m nhorch-street, and was sent
for twenty days tc- the Workhouse in conse?
quence.
j. Brady, found drunk in Chui on-street, was
discharged with an admonition not to be found

THE NINETEENTH CENTUBT.-The September
number ot this stirring magazine has an at?
tractive table of contents. We notice a leader
on the Political Crisis; William C. Preston, by
Ex-Governor Perry; Among the Buins. A Poem,
by Wm. Gilmore Simms; An Irish Story; Oar
Early Authors and Artists; the continuation of j
Shoulder to Shoulder; another Blocsade Yarn,
and the usual literary and miscellaneous
papers. The nfWazins this month is bright,
lively and entertaining, chockfull of informa?
tion and amusement. But the "Booty-graphs"
are awfully stupid.
THE NSW Ttxuoxs, built in the north for the
Athens (Ga.) Truck Company, will be shipped
from New York, it is expected, on Wednesday
next. The trucks will be received in Charles?
ton by a committee of five members of the
company, wbo have been detailed by the presi?
dent, Henry Beuese, to take charge of and es?
cort them home. The South Carolina Railroad
Company have, with characteristic liberality,
consented to pass tbe trucks and escort over
the road free of charge; and it is believed that
tho Georgia Bailroad Company will follow tb.s
excellent example. Tbe entire cost of the new
trucks is $1100. This amount has been con?
tributed by tbe citizens of Athen?, and by the
ladies who held a fair tor the purpose.
A WHITE AND BLACK REPUBLICAN PASTY.
The colored people are awaking to the faot
that they are only the tools of the white Rad i
eals, and we doubt not that ere long there will
be a white and a black Republican party in the
Benth. ' Daddy Cain, who cl? i ms to speak for
the black men, says that he has found tbe
Northern whites in this State and through?
out the South "all intent on getting as many
offices on their sh un! dens as a for ly year old
rattle Snake, sud not with standing that tbey
are loaded iown to bell wi*b crimes, and false
promises, made and as often broken, they are
still ready to bleed more for the cause of-'li-u
m-a-n-it-y? they are as ready to bribe a man
now as ever, with, lies, whioh would shame the
'wickedest man* that ever did lie on all sides.
We find that they are willing that competent
colored men should have a share in govern?
ment, but it is the share whioh the Monkey
gave the two contending cats over a piece of j
cheese. He managed to become the ump ire
between them. In order to settle the dispute,
he took g ooo cate to bite a piece off eaoh one
so ss to leave one larger than the other till
finally he ate both pieces, and the cats bad
nothing left to contend about. Such bas been
the division of office to the negro between the
two Parties, tbe Radicals jud Conservatives in
tbe Republican Party. Of course the Demo?
crats had nothing to rive, and hence no one
believed a word tbey said. In the coming
contest it will be wise for the people to renum?
ber these double dealers and govern them?
selves aooordingly. Prepare for action, for tbe
time draws nigh."
CBUMBS.-The Mayor decided Saturday to
permit the storekeepers, on Market-street, to
keep their boxes in front of their stores, if in
so doing they allow sufficient room for pedes?
trians.
The negroes who nearly every day congre
gaie around the City Hall, and wbo, by the
way, do not appear to hare any work to do,
unless, talking politics and complaining gene?
rally can be considered such, declare tbat
there are too many negroes coming to the city
from the country; that they come and take

On Church-street, Friday uitrbt, there was an

the penitentiary Saturday morning.
Lieutenant Taft and Officer Levy had an un?
successful chase after two men -wi i o attempted j
to force an outrance into tbe bone*, belonging
to Mr. Marx Levy, on Rutledge Avenue, near
Cannon-street, Saturday moraing, about one
o'clock.
Pomoey Jones, who was fined ten dollars by
the Mayor a few daya since for having com- [
mitted an assault upon J. Richardson, took
ont cross warrants for him. Kate Richardson
and Rober. Richardson, Saturday. They gave
security to appear before tbe State Court in
November.
The case of William Wbilden, colored, who
was arres i ed for assaulting Jacob Brown on
John's Island, bas been compromised.

ting.
A young man fainted at (he Citadel Square
Baptist Church yesterday daring the morning
service.
John Murphy, of whose mysterious disap?

Some fifteen hundred Chinamen have been
ordered through the agency ia Savannah,

In your issue of the 27th I noticed a card
under the signature ot M. Caulfield, Floor la?

flour merchants as published the day previous.
Is this not a strange proceeding on his part?
rhe most experienced and most competent
judges of flour in the city met-at his request
to recommend a standard for his guidance m in?
specting flour. He expressed himself satisfied
with the samples adopted as a standard, and
having been scown the record of their proceed?
ings before it was put into the hands of the
printer, he made no objection to its publica?
tion. The law in these matters, "aa he under?
stands it." will not make him s competent
judge ot floor, and he refuses the "additional
light" of those who, in his opinion, are compe?
tent to ad vi se. If men with from fifteen co thirty
years' experience are not competent, who are? or
who will he sall opon? Surely he will not pre?
tend to place hia experience of a few weeks in
competition with them? He concludes with a
aly hint to the public, which would le? d them
to infer that the flour merchants had oily au
"eye Bingle" to their own interests, and he
only stood between thurn and great wrong to
the purchasers. I have no doubt-and I write
advisedly-that if (be office ot flour inspector
was abolished entirely, it would not provo dis?
astrous. The purchasers, as a class, disregard
the inspector's brand, preferring the recom?
mendation ot the responsible and experienced
rendor. However, I admire bis devotion to
principle, uninfluenced by any selfish conside?
ration; lt is characteristic of parties holding
