is lessened every week.

one dollar by the Mayor.
Mr. Goodwyn, who baa been here instruct
ing the new Customhouse officers m their
duties, has.'it is reported, asserted that he will
have to orge the removal of several of them on
account of incompetency.

MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE . -About three
months ago, an old man named Murphy, who
bee received three honorable dischargee from
the United States Army, came from- Angas ta,
md stopped at a boarding house np-town. He
bad about fonr hundred dollars, and seemed
to devote most of his time to spending it for
something to drink. He v?as seldom absent
from the house more than an hour at a time.
Early Wednesday morning he left the house,
and has not been seen or heard of since,
although diligent search has been m ado for
him. It is belie ved that he has destroyed him?
self.

at Georgetown, August 28, and signed "A Sub?
scriber," reflecting very severely upon the mail
agents of the Northeastern Railroad. As you
have given publicity to tho article of said cor?
respondent, I trust you will allow me (a Caro?
linian) the same opportunity to defend myself
through the same source. **A Subscriber" first
asks a question, and then arrives ; t conclu?
sions, and makes erroneous statements, with,
out knowing the facta or m Brits of the case, or
who WAS to blame (if auyj in regard to the
non-delivery ot 'the Georgetown mad" on Hat? ,
urday last; \sd then gives vent to hie spleen
upon the unoffending, in the publio prints, hy j
an uncalled for tirade. The article reads thus:
"I wish to know, through your valuable paper,
if the mail agent, who left Charleston on the |
Northeaatern Railroad on last Saturday morn?
ing's train, waa sick or astop when be passed [
Kings tree, or why it waa he did .not put off the i
Georgetown mai. The carrier waa waiting for
it." I would say, ter the inform?t ian of this
aarcaatic and vulnerable writer, that the "mail
agent ?os neither sick nor asleep when he
passed Kingtree." Neither was ho lame or
lazy, nor oerehct to bia duties. This correa?
pondent asserts again, without knowing, that
"tbe mail bag was seen on the train." Now, I
would ask, who BAW it ? . Did the Georgetown
mail carrier see it ? If so, why did he not take
it out ? It has always been an understanding
between myself and said mail carrier, that
the mail bag is always put at the door of the
mail oar, and on arrival, of th ? train, be must'
rome there and get it. I have the Eingstrae
mail to attend to. affd I cannot leave my oar to
go around and bunt up the Georgetown mail
carrier. It m?.y be proper to ?tate here, how?
ever, that, on ? prev.ous trip, the Georgetown
mail carrier bad ?eft a bag of mail in the Kiogs
