that I may reply to a, .malicious attack, made
by the Insurance Tunes, ot New York, upon
an institution with which many honorable
gentlemen in this and other Southern States
?re connected.
Until suggested by friends not oonueeled
with the Southern Life Insuranco Company
-the institution aesailed-I had not thought
it neoessary to reply, and for the followiug
reasons : >

In the next place, I had supposed that a
journal which had no regard foi truth, and the
endorsement of which ia a matter of mere bar?

strengthening ot the "Southern Life."
I had Bupposed that no Southern man could
be influenced by the statements of a -journal
which bad published, as I had Bbown in a for?
mer card?"twelve wilful, unmitigated faluc
hoods. in the short space ot sixteen lines. ?.
lu the next place, it .bad .occurred to me,
that the very animus of this editor, which ls
so patent, his hatred of everything Southern,
his contemptible thrust at the incapacity of
the Southern people to' manage life insurance,
his meek suggestions in another article of the
same paper, that'all .Southern and Western
companies give up the business of lifo insur?
ance 'o tho North, und bm complaint of our
olaniehness, because, forsooth, wo presumed
to retain Southern money in Southern States,
would have been a sufloient auswar for every
Southern maa.
For these reasou? I thought it unnecessary
to write. At the Boggesuon ot friends, how?
ever, I reply briefly.
The Times, evidences its ignorance of facts,
or its total disregard of truth, or both, by ile
reference to General Gordon F. Granger as
agent for U?B' company, lt is, however, as
weil Bupvoi ied hero'as elsewhere in its article.
General Granger has not now, nor never had,
any connection whatever with this company. _
Tho Times says the losses of the southern
Lifo have been-heavy, and compares it with
certain pioked companies from tho North.
The losses have been heavy, but the busi?
ness has been heavy too.. If a -merchant does
one million of profitable busloesB, - does be not
expect' greater less in bad debts, .?Vc:, than
another who does, one-tout h. of the busineee?
If n litro Company insures 6000 lives, must it
not have, of necessity, a larger, number of its
insured diej than another wbioh insures 600

The Sontbern Life lost more than its picked
company-the Great Western'-bat it dla vast?
ly more business. Why did not tbo editor of
the Times give the amount of the business
done by each, the amount of loss by oaob, and
then draw the comparison ? Does not the
merest child in figures understand this to be
the only way to get at the ratio of loss ? Yes;
brit it did not snit the purpose of the Timea.

This piokod company is shown by the New
York reports of 1868 to have received f00,247,
and to have paid ont the same year in cash,
168 417. Thus expending absolutely over $8000
more than it received. While the Atlanta De?
partment on gross premiums to the amount of
nearly $200,000, spent in losses and expsneea
of every description only 89 per cent, ol its re?
ceipts, and the whole company increased its
