THE ENGINE SOUSE OE THE STONE?
WALL EIRE COUTANT.
An invofitiRation into the origin of tho fire,
by wbioh the engine bouse of the Stonewall
Piro Comp my was consumed on Tuesday
night last, wan continuod yesterday by Appe?
lant Engineer B. M. Alexander, at the office ot
Hessre. Buist A Buist, on Broad-etroot. Offi?
cer O. B. Lory, of tho tl ot ec ti ve forco, who had
bo'-n instructed to work up the case, bad secur
od tho attendance of a number of witnosscs,
the subit?neo ot whose testimony ls subjoined:
Mr. W. G. Pombtrtou, while near tue ongino
house, at or about a quarter plat eight
o'clock ruesday night, saw a smoke there, and
thou saw negroes trying to forco opou
tho door. Ho went to General Wago?
ner's houso oppoiite and asked for au
axo. His son brought an axe, and with it
knookod tho door opon. Ho with Wageucr
pulled the ongino out. As ho ran in be
steppod on BOIUO slipper}' subatauoo on tho
floor, and would have fallen but for catching
bold of the tongue of the engine. Wh6n be
first saw tho smoko there were two negroes
noar the engine house, and one near the cor?
ner. He asked them what wau tho causo of
the smoko, and they replied that there was a
smokehouse in rear of tho engiue house. Think?
ing it queor that there sbould be smoko in a
smoke house at this time of year, ho went to?
wards tho cngino bouse door, whereupon tho
nogrops bo had accosted ran off.
Mr. H. H. DeLeon, who lives next door to
th J engine houso, went there when the alarm
was giveu. On entering, he found ibat the rear
door was open. The wheels ot tho ongine
were not tied. He saw that there was somo delay
in getting the roel out, and heard that it was
occasioned by tho wheels being tied.
Mr. Henry Wagoner was at his father's house
when a gentleman caaae and asked for an axe
to break tbe engine house door open. He got
the axe, broke the door down, and aidod in
hauling mit tho engine, whioh was done with?
out difficulty. He had nothing to do with
hauling out the reel.
Mr. Wm. Harr?l, Jr., a momber of the Stone?
wall Company, saw the door b^oKen down with
an axo, and entered the house with tho first.
He saw the fire m a oloset on tho loft hand
effie. He attempted to haul out the reel, but
could not more lt more than a few feet. On
looking at it to see what was the matter, ho
found that the drag rope waa entangled or tied
(ho oould not be positive which) between the
spool and axle, prevent lng it from being
moved. He took' out bia knife and ont the
rope, and, with the help of two colored men,
hauled it to the well, where the engine had
been camed. On attempting to unreel the
bose ho found that also fastened or entangled
with a rope. Ibis rope had to be out with an
axe before the hose oould be need. Whon he
en ered the engiue house the rear door was
open.
Mr. E. T. West arrived after the feel was
hauled out, but saw it after the attempt bad
been made to unreel the hose. Seeing that it
could not be moved, be took his axe (being an
axman of tbe company; and out the ropo wilb
whioh it waa tied.
Mr. H. W. tilleox, who bad charge of the
closet in wbioh tbe fire originated, said that
t' ore were rags in it, wbiob had been dipped
in oil and turpentine to olean the engine, but
they had not baen used amco the 21st June.
Neither bad that doset been open since that
time. He was tbe only one in the company
that had a koy toit. There were no matches
kept iu the closet.
Mr. F. T. Moore helped to pul] out the engine,
.nd on returning to the reel round that it was
tiod, as was the bose, lt could not be moved,
nor the boob reeled off, until ropes, whioh tied
them, bad been out. , t
At twelve o'clock the investigation was ad?
journed until five o'clock. At that hour infor?
mation was roceived that the matter would re?
quire a little more tune to be looked into, and
the investigation was further adjourned nntll
five P. M., Tuesday afternoon.
The evidence clearly proves that the firo was
the woik of an incendiary.
GAVK SBOTJUTY.-Mr. Hammerscbmidt, of
whose arrest at the inatanoe of the friends of
Mr. Blank, upon the charges of kidnapping,
obealing and defrauding, malicious trespass
and false imprisonment, an account bas been
given, gave security, yesterday, in tho sum of

Two MORE DB?MMEUH IN TROUBLE;'-On
Thursday afternoon last, Officers Lsvy and
Coates arrested Mr. Walter Muro, travelling
agent of the house of French, Richard? tc Co.,
Of Philsdelph a, and Ur. Joseph Gorhrm,
travelling agent of thc house of Hooker fis
Brother, of New York, upon the charge of
offering goods for oslo aud Bolioitlus orders, in
violation of the ordinance "to been so and reg?
?late travelling agents, itinerant salesmen,
transient persons and other persons non-resi?
dents of the city,-' and providing that an v per?
son failing to comply with the ordinance shall
be fined five hundred dollars.
Yesterday morning the parties were arraign?
ed before the Hryor, wbo decided to first hear
the case of Mr. Mire. Mr. Maro acknowl?
edged thai he had been guilty of doing what
he was charged with.
Alderman Collins Bald he knew Mr. Mure
and tho house he represented very well; Ibat
Mr. M. had been here several times; tnat he
was unacquainted with the ordinance, and
neither be nor bia house w<<uld violates law
1er anytbi ig; that he (Collins) was willing lo
give security for the paymoot of the tax of one
per cent, upon every hundred dollars' worth of
goods sold.
The Mayor stated that the ordinance pre?
nded that s lax of tbroe per cont, should be
pud on every hundred dollars' worth ol goods
?old.
Alderman Collins theo said he was still wit?
ling to bs security fur the amount, bat it was
his opinion that the law was o se leas to the
aity, that it had beep passed in Mayor Gall
lard's time for the benefit of a few merchants
who were members of Council, and introduced
and passed it.
Tbs Mayor said that he would require Mr.
Mure to get out a lioenae. pay the tax, sod also
pay a flue of twenty-five dollars. He then
announced that be would postpone S bearii.g
ot the cas i ot Mr. Gorham nntll to-day.
We do not see ttie? necessity of these dram
mere being arrested unless the law is enforced
ii gai ?st them. It is stated that the City At?
torney assorts that tho Mayor has nothing to
do in suoh cases but io enforce the law to tbs
loiter. Fining s man twenty-five dollars for an
offonoe (of which be admits himself guilty,)
for whioh the law requires a fine of Ave hun?
dred do lars, ls not, in our humble judgment,
carrying oat the law.
