"At the time of the evacuation of the little
Town ot Jacksonville, Florida, by tbe Con?
fed?ralo Torces and its citisjns, in tho latter
pan of 1661 or tho early part of 1862, 1 was
there, having boon som from Virginia (by a
special application made by Governor Milton
lo President Davis) to drill somo of tho Flori?

veyed the order from General Tr?pier (then
commanding that deparlmen ) to Major
Charles Hopkins (commanding Hopkin'e Bat?

for ins battalion was then at Baldwin, and
burn The saw mills in and around the place, to?

dings that might provi serviceable to the
enemy, but "to aparo and protect as far aa
possible all privato dwollin ts nod property ex?

at tho time of the burning, thc vory night
crossed tho 8t. John's bar, aud wero caution.*

mills and foundry, as was ordered, wero soon
consigned 11 the flames, ae was also tho largo
hotel, (tho Judson House,) and several
stores-tho stores and h itel, however, not by
hynda of Hopkin's Battalion. Mr. Bowen was
ono of tho perpetrators of this outrage, and I
will hero stato, on tho word and honor of a
man, "that, on the night of the fire in Jack?
sonville, I saw Atm. ono ot tho primo movere
and instigators in thc "coUi'io" of C. L. Rob?

sist In moving blankets and shoots fillod with
goods and merchandise stolen from said
store, and knowing, too, that Mr. .Rob?
inson was a "gool Union man," so-called;
and mark me, at this time this "Honorable" \
gentleman, C. C. Bowen, did not belong nor j
was ho in any wiso connected with any organ?
ized Confederate force, but esme to Jaokaon- j
ville, upon this oooasion, solely for the purpose
of pillaste and plunder, and the goods bo stole,
for he did steal them, he appropriated to him

ever it suited him tb do so. Ho was at or about
this time, I think-, associated with a man by
the name of Woodward, also a gamblor, bm
by far a more docent man Than Bowira. Wood?
