A general dearth of business and the few transac
tions of tbe past week combine to render quotations
merely nominal. Bille of the Bank of the btate
have depreciated to some extent. Other bank bills
are in demand. City stock is dull at 61. gales were
made during the week by Mr. A. M. Moretaod of
16,000 south Carolina Ilailroad bonds, due in 1873,
and 600 shares People's Bank stock, old, at 15 20.
Money is eapy at J? percent, per month, on good col
lateral security.

The Crops.?"'he general report for the week bas
been, ou the whole, favorable to the cross, with
some complaint oi rust and shedding in limited lo
calities but as the weather hoe assumed a dryer and.
more settled appejrance, these eviia may not pro
bably spread. Beports of the opening of new cot
ton comes trom several quarters, and, with dry and
warm weather, the increasing receipts of new crop
may dp looked for spee-iily, a single bale each hav
ing been reoorted in Georgia and Texas. Planters
on the sea islands are a shade more hopeful, the
cateipillar apparently not progressing, and it is
thought that the insect may make a le-s destructive
visit than heretofore. Ihe rice orop keeps up a
good appearance on most of the rivers, and a 1 avora
ble harvest time is what is now needed to secure a
fair yield.
The Cotton Mabket.?The English market for
tbe period under review has preserved considerable
steadiness with moderate transactions?middlings
being quoted at 12%d *? lb advancing to 13d; at
New York the prices have been without Important
change, and middlings have ruled at 33%c ** lb
while at this port transactions, which were on the
most res'rioted cale, (hewed a slightly easier ten
dency, closing steady. Milbings, which were sonie
whatnominal at81^@82, softened to 31>?c *? lb.
The Liverpool and New York markets have shown
the following movements for the week On Friday,
August 6, the former was steady, sales 12,000 bales,
uplands 12%d; tbe latter was firm, sales 1800 bales
at33>?c. On .Saturday the former was a eba>'e firm
er, uplands 12%d. sales 12.000 bales; the latter was
firm sates 1600 bales at 88J?c. On Monday the for
mer was quiet, sales 12,000 biles, uplands 12%d; tbe
latter was firm, sales 1800 baies at 33>$c. On Tues
day the former was steady, sales 10,000 bale- ; the
latter wss unaltered, sales 1600 bales at 83^o. On
Wednesday tho former was firmer, uplands ISd,
ales 12,000 hales ; the latter was more active, sale*
3600 bales at 33>?c. Yesterday the former was firm,
sales 10.000 bales, uplands 13d; the latter was qulel
but steady at 83Kc.
The arrivals at this port for the week have been no
bags of sea islanis and 189 bales of uplands, against
no bags of sea islands and 166 bales of uplands the
week before, and 3 bags of sea islands and 543 balee
of uplands for the week 1*4 year. These supplies
have come from the following source?: bay of up
lands, per South Carolina Bailroad, 179 bales; per
Northeastern Bailroad, 10 bales.
