The interest taken by the Georgia pres
in the affairs of South Carolina is very gra
tifying to our people; but when we find i
gravely asserted in tho oolnmns of the Ma
orin Telegraph that "all the material inter
cats of Carolina are more completely par
alyied than those of the other eotton States
and the evidences of recuperation are man
ifealy more slow and uuoertatn," it be
comes our duty to say a good word ia ou
own behalf to prove that our case is not A
desperate as our friends seem'lo. believe.
The condition of a State is fairly indioa
ted by the net money value of ita produce
by the healthiness or unhealthiness of it
trade, and by tbe encouragement given t
I new undertakings and to all movement
which look to the development and utilize
don of its resources and wealth. Apply io
these tests to South Carolina, it is loan
that we have no reason to be ashamed c
the progress we have made, and that th
rapidity and certainty of our recover
from the effeots of the late war have n<
been excelled in any other State of tb
South. .
The money value of the Sonth Carolin
cotton crop of 1868-69 at an average <
twenty five cents a pound, is about $18
000,000. This ootton, with good managi
ment, oan be produoed at ten and twelv
oems. Adding to the ootton crop, ot
large crop of rioe, the proceeds of bi
phosphate beds, and of eur fruit and veg
table trade, it may be safely estimated th
the net profit on the marketable ..produ

road, the Air Line Railroad, the Chatham
Railroad, the Cher aw and Greensboro' Rail
road and others. We mention these as an
ovidenoo that the people are alive and wide
awake.
Agrien tumi societies are forming in
nearly every county, and the first annual
Fair of the State Society will be held in
November. Mere than one immigration so
oiety is in active operation. And we have
every reason to believe that we shall be
able to obtain enough Chinese laborers for
the seaooaat to enable the planters to pnt all
their best lands in cultivation. This Chinese
labor will also, by competition, make the
freedmen work more steadily and faithfully
than they are pleased to do now.
ThesC ?rc h?d ??O?B, ?nd we ask our
Macon contemporary whether they show a
oondition of "oumplete paralysis," or of
.'slow and uncertain recuperation ?" And
the prospect ?head is as bright as we could
desire. The short cotton and rice crops
promise well. Corn may be short, but we
have money with which io buy bread. Ou
the sea islands the caterpillar has done no
harm, and the most experienced long cotton
planters predict a better orop of that valu .
able staple than we hate had for many
years. t,
This is oar oondition. This is what we
have done in spite of the Radical devils
who riot and revel in the L ?gislature, on
the bench, at the courthouse, and in the
Executive M *naion. Blasting and vaunting
are not te our taste, but we do un hesita
'tingly assert that South Carolina is at this
moment aa sound andas strong, financially
and industrially, as any other Southern Stale,
while our prospects for the future are at least
as bright as those of Virginia and Georgia.,
. .We hope, therefore, that the Telegraph
will reconsider its unfortunate statement,
and admit that there may be some peace,
some security, and some prosperity in poor
Carolina ! ,
