The interest ttkea by the Georgia pres ia the affairs of South Carolina is very gra tifying to our people; but when we find i gravely asserted ia the columns of the Ma con Telegraph that "all the material inter esta of Carolina are more completely par al vie<i than those of the other cotton States and the evidences of recuperation are man ifesly more slow and uncertain," it be come1? oar daly to say a go jd word ia oat own behalf to prove that opr case is not sc desperate as our friends B-em to believe. The condition of a State is fairly indica ted by the net money value of its produce, by the healthiness or unhealthiness of its trade, and by the encourag-m int giren t< new undertakings and to all movement; which look to the development and utilisa, lion of its resources and wealth. Applying i he s s tests to South Carolina, it is iou nd that we bare no reason to b? ashamed of the progress we have made, and that thc rapidity and oartsiuty of our recovery from the effects of the late war have not bees excelled in any other State of the South. The money value of the South Carolina cotton crop of 1868-69 at an average of twenty fire cents a pound, is about $18, . 000.000. This ootton, with good manage? ment, can be prodaoed at ten and twelve casts. Adding to the cotton crop, our large ?op of rice, th? prooeeds of our phosphate beds, and of our fruit and vege? table trade, it may be safely estimated that the net profit on the marketable produc? tion-? ef 1868-69 is between $8.000.000 and $10 000.000. This is exclusive of bread si uffs and meat raised for home consump? tion. The profit on the crops of rice and cotton for one year is, therefore, suffioient to pay off the whola debt of the State. The seacoast has met with disaster after disas? ter, bat for three years the middle and up? per^ counties have been steadily making money. Cud debts have been cleared off, and nc new ones of any oasequenoe have been contracted. Wnen loans of money were wanted they could not be had. This compelled the general adoption of the cash system of doing business, whioh is now the rule throughout the State. All our mer cuanta egree ia saying that the goods sold to th? country dealers are promptly paid for; and we know that ia the North and West oar credit is as good ai it was ia the palmiest days b cf ore the war. Bat after paying off old debts there was still a large surplus of money in the hands of the planters and farmers This was ap? plied to patting the plantations ia working order, to the parchase of implements and stock, and to the repairs of houses aod buildings. The money still rem tining oould.find no ..investment. Ta ero were no : negroes te be bought, sod of land there was already more than enough. The greater part of the surplus was invested in gold, and, ia every village ia the State, tens of thousands of dollars are carefully hidden from daylight aod use fui ness. Upon this point we have made careful inquiries, sod we ore convinced that there it mort hard monet/ in South Carolina to day than there wit at any one lime before the tear. We want to see this money in aouve circulation, and it will gradually flaw' into the channels of trade. But confiienca is a plant of elow growth, and the dangers and the vicieti tu les cf the past are uot easily forgotten. Columbia is gradually rebuilding. Senator Sprague promises to ereot mills on tae Columbia canal, and the value of real estate is ad? vancing steadily, if slowly. Charleston is rapidly recovering her old business Geor? gia arid Alabama are again supplied by the C?arleston j ibbers and merchants, sad, tbanka ip the improvements in our railroad system, freight is seat without tranship ment fr bm G bar?es on to St. Louis, Vicks? burg and the cities of the Gulf. We have also the Port Royal Rail? road, the Air Line Railroad, the Chatham Railroad, theCheraw and Greensboro' Rail? road and others. We mention these as an evidence that the people are alive and wide ? awake. Agricul tural societies are forming in nearly every county, and the first annual Fair of the State Society will be held in November. More than one immigration so? ciety is in active operation. And we have every reason to believe that we shall be able to obtain enough Chinese laborers for the seaooast to enable the planters to put all their best lands in cultivation. This Chinese labor will also, by competition, make the freedmen work more steadily and faithfully than they are pleased to do now. These are hard.facts, and we ask our Macon contemporary whether they show a oonditioa of '-complete paralysis," or of "slow and uncertain recuperation ?" And the prospect ahead is as bright as we oould desire. The short cotton and rica crops promise well. Corn may be short, but wc have money with whioh to buy bread. On the sea islands the caterpillar has done no harm, and the most experienced!long cotton planters prediot a better crop of that valu? able staple than we have had for many years. ...
