And even if they cannot find a place to
stretch themselves, they eau still sleep, bolt
upright, in a chair, in a car. or anywhere,
their heads wagging round, to be sure, but
their senses locked up quietly io the arms of I

empty stomach, and so forget their hunger;
and they can do it equally well on a full stom?

Boon people may truly be said to possess tho
gift of sleep. Some persons may call them
".sleepy beads;" yet they contrive to get

need to study the art of sleeping. And first
and foremost, they must carefully guard

canal. A plentiful, but digestible and simple
duiner, a light and Tory plain supper, taken

over heavy bed clothing, rather light to begin

Above all things avoid Retting into a fret

awake three or four hours on a stretch. Ton
will soon get used to the thing, or by patient

know men who aro reasonably hale and hearty,
though approaching their threescore years and

perience whaN an uninterrupted night's sleep
means, and whoso nights are ordinarily broken
by hours of wakefulness.

WHAT IS UNDER TUE CRUST.
At Hampstead, in Knglaud, the Waterworks
Company, in 1853. bored an artesian well to
the depth of 1802 feet, or within a few feet ot a
quarter of a mile. Tue company sunk about
?8003 m this well in two years, and found no
water. The section of tbo boring shows sixty
eight difierenr. strata. The last layers aro, an
eigbt foot depth ot red sandstone, micaceous
and quartz .me;. a.two feet depth of light red
clayey Band, with small angular fragments of ]
chert and flint; and a six feet depth of whitish
and greenish hurd sandstone. Mr. J. G. Sym?
ons, a scientific Englishman, thought this bolo 4
in the ground mit ht be turned lo good use in
tho cause of science, even it it bad failed to be of ]
practical benefit by cooling the parched throats
ot tbe Hampsteaders and putting money in the
purse of the cjmpauy. He was a member of
a committee appointed by the British Asso?
ciation to investigate tho temperature of the
earth at great depths; and at once saw that
here was an excellent opportunity to conduct
his experiments a quarter of a mile down, even
if be should never have an opportunity of |

in* of tho difficulties he had to encounter, the
ingenious apparatus he used to overcome those
difficulties, ?co., &e. It is the results of the
experiments, co far, that we wish to call atten?
tion to, and these may be briefly stated. Mr.
Symon's experiments are not yet concluded.
He has made them week by week since January,
and the results so far he regards as at any rate
decisive. He has made gradna! observations
down to a depth of 1100 feet, and bas ascer?
tained that the temp?r?t nretheie is twenty de
{:roes higher thao above ground-that is to say,
be thermometer showed seventy degrees,
whereas the mean temperature of London ts
fifty degrees. If this rate of increase con?
tinues, as there seems no reason to doubt
would be the case, Loilmor point (two hundred
and ten degrees) would be reached about
a mile and a half down. There' is" then
s rise of temperature of one des reu in
every fifty-five feet of the earth's crust.
At this rato, , we would .not have to go
many miles down to reach a point where all
matter is m a state of fusion. The reeuicser

come a day when some more practical advan?
