'lhere is one kind ol flattery which is com?
mon to both med and women, and that is the
expressed preference of stx. Xhns, when m JO
want to flatter women, they see how iu finit jly
they prefer their aooiety to that of their own
sex; and womeu will say the same to men. Or
if they do not say it, they wiil ac. it. Bee a set
of women congregated together without tho

They will talk to each other oottainly; and one
or two will sit away together and dicusa their
pi wat? affairs with .niuiatiot,; but tba great
mass of them aro only bait vitalized while
wavtit g the advent of the men to rouse them

the Pygmalion even for a moment, and for the
weakest order of soul giving, is about the
greatL-bt pleasure that a man can know, it he is
susceptible to the finer kinda cf flattery.
Some women, indeed, not only show their
preference for men, but openly confesa it, and
confess at the same Time to a lut'ty contempt
or abhorrence for the society of women. These
are generally women who are or have been
beautios, or "who have literary and intellectual
preteusions, or who despise babies aud con?
demn housekeeping, and profess themselves
unable to talk to other women because of their
narrowness and stupidity. But for the most
8art they are women who, by their beauty or
aeir position, have hzen uBod to receive ex?
tra attention from men, and thus their prefer?

receiving attentions from them. Thcso aro
those sweet, bumble, caressing women who
flatter you with every word and look, but whose
flattery is nothing but a ptetty dress put on
for ah ow, and taken off when the show ia done
with.
The flattery met with in society is not often
very harinlul save to coarse or specially simple
natures. You mast be either one or the other
to be able to believe it. Lady Morgan was
perhaps the most unblushing and excessive ot

A bon half-past ten o'elcok the white flag is

enough for a well-developed crinoline to get in.
They resemble pig pens more than elressing
