steamship Manhattan, Captain M. S. Wood?
hull, of the line of. New York steamships con?
signed to Messrs. James Adger & Co., made a
most excellent passage yesterday, reaching
here In fifty-two-' hours from. Hew York, and
thereby giving her freight and passengers un?
usual dispatch. The Manhattan passed, at
7:15 A. M., m Monday, fifteen miles north of
the Frying Pan, the steamship Champion, from
this port for New York.
THE CATHE* ILL AB IN FLORIDA.-Mr. W. S.
McCoy, ol Madison, Fla., writes to Colonel J.
B. F. Sloan, ot thu city, as follows: "We have
caterpillars all over the State. So far as heard
from, there ia rio injury to the crop. Yet I think
they will out us off one-half. They may do
worse or not injure the crop materially... My
crop is better fruited and more advanced than
at the sa ne time last year, and as I bave made
an extra good corn crop, I neither feel despon?
dent nor \ery hopeful." The writer is a plan?
ter and merchant of high standing.
NEW ELEVATOR.-On Saturday last Mr. Ar?
chibald McLeish (builder of Scott's patent ele?
vator) completed an elevator for the business
house of Mr. H. Bul winkle. No. 94 East Bay,
which has three stories and a celhtr. The ele?
vator was put up in the short space of three
daja. It aili spstain a weight of 25 0 pounds.
One man can ascend witb five hundred pounds
witb ease, and can take one thoasand without
any great exertion. It can be worked to great
advantage by three men, one man travelling
on the platform, always being present to load
and unload, the three men thus perter mi og
the labor of four meo. The apparatus com?
bines power, speed, convenience and safety.1

heats the shells through and 'causes them to

Late Sunday afternoon Wm. Kerr arrived on
the vessel ho bad shipped on, and.-to his in?

AR BEST OF MU BPHY.
Shortly after the affair at May's boase, Kerr
went to Justice Mackey and had a warrant is?
sued for tho arrest of Ma> and Murphy, charg?
ing them with having committed an aggra?
vated assault and battery upon bim. His face
certainly bore evidonoos of having BUfforod
severely. Officers Coates and Cjuiuo notified thc
accused to come around to tho Detective
Office, which they did in a very short time
after receiving tho notice. Justice Mackey here
held com t.
TESTIMONY.
The testimony was very conflicting, and wo
give bolow, substantially, that of each witness:
Harry Mays testified that Kerr oame into bia
house wi o e Murphy was and demanded his
wiio. Ho thou challenged Murphy to .fight
"fist fight," which be refused to do, as he also
refused to fight with knives and pistols, as j
afterwards requested to do by Kerr, Kerr all
of the time having his hands in bis pocket.
Suddenly, daring the conversation which cu
saed, Kerr drew his pistol and fired at Muruhy,
who had struck him, the ball, a? witness testi?
fied, going through his hat, (ahole in which he
Bhowed, but it was very muoh unlike a hole
made by a pistol ball.) Witness, thou took
Kerr's pistol away and threw it into the back
yard.
Mrs. May testified that Kerr had; come in
as her husband stated and challenged Murphy
to fight, bub ho refused.' Karr -then called her
names and Murphy struck bim, and a general
row ensued. She know a pistol was-fired off
by Kerr, bat how many tunos she was hot ablo
to say. ..' .'
Wm. Kerr testified that he had gone to May's'
boase to sed Murphy about his wife, and had
challenged, him to fight, but ho would not.
Mrs. Korr then called bis wife a bad name and
he retorted, whereupon be was set ?pon by
Murphy, who beat him while May held his
arms. He bad a pistol in- his pocket, hut was
unable to draw it because May hold him too

During this testinony Murphy treated the
court wi th great contempt hy muttering threats
against Mr. John A. Moroso, Who had volun?
teered as oonuHol for Kerr, and others in the
courtroom, and the Justice ordered him to jail
for contempt of court. Bat fielding that Mur?
phy could not then tarnish proper security fot
his appearance for trial, and would therefore
have to go to jail anyhow, ho withdrew the
commitment for contempt, ajpi bent him to jail
in charge ot Officers 'Quinn arid-Levy, in de?
fault of said security. May was discharged.
After remaining confined an hour or two,
Murphy furnished security and was released.
During these proceedings Murphy sued oat
a warrant against Kerr, charging him with
having assaulted bim with a deadly weapon.
Justice Minot, who Issued the warrant, heard
the evidence, and required him to give $300
security to appear for trial.
