TUESDAY HORNING, AUGUST 10, 1869.
The South Carolina Railroad Company.
Litters have been reoeivod by the Pres?
ident of the South Carolina Railroad Com?
pany from the Hon. C. M. Furman fully
oonfirming the cable telegram published in
this paper t wo weeks age. The negotiation
for the exohange of the past due sterling
bends, guaranteed by the State, for new
first mortgage bonds bf the company has
been successfully completed, and the stock?
holders need apprehend no farther embar?
rassment in coonee ion with the overdue
debt.: ., '.. ... ;"r !- . - . , .
Oar State grows daily more prosperous
and strong, our1 people see the bend iu the
long lane of adversity, and we know no rea?
son why the South Carolina Railroad should
not speedily beoome as profitable lo its own
stockholders as it has always been to the
common weal th of South Carolina. If gro w?
ing trade, administrative ability and eco?
nomical management can command publio
favor,and thumbing dividends, tb? South
Carolina Railroad Company will soon, be
one of the most flourishing corporations in
the Sooth. J
Ar? Important Railroad Project.
It would ba a pleasant thing surely to
run through from Washington to Charleston .
ia twenty-one hour?; not by the Californian
air ship, or by a break neok Lightning
Train, but by oars running at a moderate
speed via Alexandria, Lynchburg, Greens?
boro' and Cher&w, BO avoiding the twists
and turns in the present route via Wil?
mington, Weldon and Richmond. This
result, so much to be desired, can, it
seems, bs accomplished by the oonstruotion
of the North Carolina Central Railroad from
Cheraw to Greensboro', and by the com?
pletion of the direot railroad from Danville
te Lynchburg.
The North Carolina Central Railroad
Company is already organised. Publio
meetings have been held in different places
to test the feeling of the people, and every?
where the projeot has been favorably re?
ceived. * Npr is this surprising. The dis?
tance to be built from Cheraw to Greens?
boro' is only one hundred miles, with essy
grades and but, little ?xoatatton neces?
sary. At present tho lands along the
route are of little value, but if the road be
built they will at, onoe command a good
prioo in the market. This the people
know, and the landholders have already
agreed to subscribe 200,000 aeres of
land at the present ooah value for stock in
the road. At th? low prioe of $2 50 an
acre this gives' the North Carolina Central
Railroad Company a workiag money basis
to begin With of $500,000. There ia no
question that the line will benefit every
rood of land through which it runs, but
what will it do for Charleston ?
The saving of timo ia transit would un?
doubtedly cause tho whole tide of throoka
travel to flo w over the new route to Charles?
ton; whence the Savannah and Charleston
Railroad would o ar ry the ' passengers to
Savannah, where they would coom ot with
short lines to every part of the South and
West. A glance at the map' will show that'
fdr, all travel, from Boston, Now York, Bal
timor?, Washington and Richmond to all
points on the Southern At lau tio Maaland
Qttlf of W?xloo; the route, vis Alex :
andria, Lynchburg, Greensboro' " ! an d
Charleston, would ba the quickest and most
direot. So muoh far posaenger travel. In
regard to freight business it assy be said
that the atm of the shipper now is rapid
delivery combined with low rates. Upon
lines bf railroad the quickness and cheap?
ness should be determined by the distanoe
'.o be travelled. . It stands to reason, there?
fore, that if tho Cheraw and Din ville lino
is shorter than the old line by Richmond and
Weldon, it can compete sacoassfully for nE
regalar railroad freight now passing over
the old lins. And by tho completion of the
Cheraw and Greensboro' Railroad (known
by ita corporate name of North Carolin*
Central Railroad) Charleston should bs able
to lay her hands upon Uta trade of anim
portant Bec tion of ooautry fro? whioh ah?
is now ont off. The road croases the whole
system of Bast and West North tarella*
Railroads, and would allow Charleston to,
o?avpete with Wilmington for the trade of
Western North Carolina, while with Lyfegh
burg, there would undoubtedly *o a,: largi
; business both ways. From that point we
should draw toboeoo, and, when neoesa&ry,
bason and breadaiaffs, wbJle from Charles?
ton should bs shipped, via Lynchburg,
supplies of cotton, rios and manufactured
goods for the West.
The whola prospect for business by
the new rout o is bright ind flittering,
All that is wanted is lo complete the
direot Has from Lynchburg to Danville,
and to build tha North Carolina Cen?
tral Railroad Toe Ly no ?burg sui Oatt
viii? Railroad ls now ia ooarae of con?
struction. Thai pari of the work will be
done for ue; bat we muot do something for
ourselves if wo woald have built, withoat
delay, the important line from Cheraw to
greensboro', N. .Ot The road will not cost
more than $4,000,000, and a large part of
this has, we believe, already been pledged.
THO triumph of the Conservative Repub?
licans in Tennessee iq another cheering
sign that the days of Radios! Republican -
lam are numbered. The election of Andrew
Johnson to the United States Senate is now
by no means improbable. One of the West?
ern journals, lately canvassing the pros?
pect, profanely obeeorved that "Brownlow
might as well be in h-I as tc have A. J.
back again in the United States Senate."
Is it sot time for the parson to be snaking
his preparations for the fate apparently tn
et.ore for him t ? ? ' . . >
