Captain D. M. Mason, of the El Paso mail
line, was shot and killed recently between Fort
Concho and Ban Antonio, Texas, as ho was get?
ting on the stage. Ibo esoort took him for a
robber and shot him. Captain M. was a Vir?
ginian, and one of Mosby's most gallant offi?
cers in the bite war.
-The latest railroad sensation is a plan by
the management of the Erie Ballway to illumi?
nate tho whole line of that road at night by
electric lights at the ferries, in tho tunnels, on
all dangerous curves and on every engine The
Bergen tunnel is to be kept illuminated by
night and day, so that the rays of the sun will
seem to be dall and forceless' in comparison.
There will be a light at each end of the ferry,
which, it is believed, will make a collision prac?
tically impossible on the 'darkest and foggiest
night. Even with the elimination of light
caused by the jarring of tho locomotive, it is
estimated that the ho id-lights will show tho
track to tho engineer, on a straight lme, for
three miles.

Philadelphia Lodger says: "Aiohbishop Mc

-The Chicago Tribune says that on the 30th
of Ju'y, oertaio prominent capitalists of that
city and New York met at the Sherman House,
and decided to purchase' of tho Visitaci?n Land
Company, a California corporation, a certain
tract of land lying just south of the City or
San Francisco, tor the sum of 32 000,000 in.
gold. For the raising of that sum, the shares
were numbered at fifty, at a valuation of $10,
?00 each. A committee was appointe! at this
meeting to visit thete lauds, and make a re?
port upon them. The tract whiob it is pro?
posed to purchase is known as the Visitaci?n
Branch, and comprises 3775 acres. It is situa?
ted just sooth of San Francisco, in the only
direction in which the city can grow. It is
., proposed by the parties who cont?mplalo pur
-cbasing this property to set lo work at once
and improve it-catting it up into parks,
boulevards, drives, and business and resi?
dence sites.
-One ef the dodges of those engaged in'
pushing spurious paper money is to rut out a
blind in pieparation tor future operations. The
makers leave some apparent defect that may
be easily removed. The def jct being thorough?
ly advertised becomes a point of reference, and
when seen the bill is of oourse refused. Bat a
new isajie ia at once put upon the market with
tho particular defeob remedied, and on refer?
ence, if found all right, the note is taken as
genuine. Thus, in tho case of tho appearance
of the counterfeit ten dollar greenbacks now
on the market, the public were notified of the
imperfect dots opposite the figures "10" on ?
each end of tho note, and tho want of a period
after the letter ' K" in Spinner's name. These
have been corrected, as they oonld readily bo,
by making the required dots with anon. The
Lotos now offered are perfect in those respects,
and the defects now supplied having been made
a test of genuineness, no doubt materially aid
their circulation.
-A correspondent, speaking of the celebri?
ties at Saiatogx, says : "Standing in iront or
the Union, surrounded by tho crowd, who look
like pigmies alongside of them, are the Hon.
John Morrissey and John C. Herman. They
are standing within a few feet of each other,
talking with some turfmen, while hundreds are
attentively observing them, many of whom aro
passing remarks regarding their physique.

The letter of Senator 8awyer in reply
to tho rejoinder o Dr Mackey, whioh ap?
pears in our colunias this morning, will, we
hope, close this branch of the newspaper
discussion between the leaders of the op?
posing wings of the South Carolina Radi?
cals One hint we may be allowed to give
to the angry disputants. It is more im
portant to the white people of the State to
know that a man is capable and honest,
than to learn that he is or is not a sound
Radical Republican. Dr. Mackey and Sen?
ator Sawyer and Representative Bowen
rate each other roundly, each accusing the
others of being traitors to the Radical par?
ty and false to the dusky voters who hoist?
ed them into office. But not a word is said
of the integrity and probity of the rival po?
liticians. Whether Mr. Sawyer, or Dr
Mackey, or Mr. Bowen is preparing to sell
out "the party," we neither kaow nor care;
but we should like to know whether the
Radical leaders think that the men who
hold the high places in the political syna?
gogue are personally worthy of confidence
and trust. This is the point whioh mist
interests the readers of THE NIWS.
Tampering with tba fire ?Department
A Danajerons ?experiment.
The Caamber of Commeroe, at a special'
meeting held on Tuesday last, adopted a
resolution requesting the City Council "to
defer any action for the present" on "a
bill to declare certain colored fire compa?
nies a part of the Fire D part ment, and to
establish a Board of Colored Firemastera ia
the City of Charleston." Tais resolution
was oonourred in by the B jard of Trado at
a meeting held on the same day, so that
Ceunoil, at its next meeting, had before it a
olear and emphatio expression of the opin?
ions dT the principal taxpayers in the .
city. The letters of the Presidents of the
Chamber of Commeroe and Board of Trade,
announcing the adoption of the r?solutions,
were read before Council, and received as
information upon motion of Alderman T.
J Mackey, who at the same time said^at
he Intended to bring up the bill in a modi?
fied shape at a subsequent meeting. This
was well enough as far as it went, bat Al?
derman Mackey, who ia the putative father
bf the bill, said besides that he did not in?
tend to have it so modified as to prevent
the colored companies from enjoying ali
the rights of inoorporated companies. The
bill then, though sleeping, is not yet dead,
and, in view of its importance and mis?
chievous tendency, it is to be regretted that
the Chamber of Commerce and Board of
Trade did not ask at onoe for an indefinite
postponement of all- notion upon it. So
long as the bill is in a oondition to be
brought up at any moment by any dema?
gogue who may wish to obtain a little poli?
tical popularity at the expenso of the city,
we have no assurance that we shall ba able i
to retain an efficient Fire Department or
bo insure at reasonable rates any portion
of our property. Tba bill should be killed,
and this will be done at the next meeting
of Counoil if there are in that body as many
honest and unselfish men as would have
saved the Cities cf the Plain from desirae- !

It is useless, perhaps, to argo that the i
immediate effect of tho passage of the pro- ,
posed bill will be ? Largs increase in the
oost of tko Firs Department. Sotting down
the expenditures ef the year at the esti?
mates Of the Clark administration, it is
doubtful whether the city will be able to
meet all it? engagements. But the esti?
mates ?ill, we believe, ia more thoa ene
instance, fall far short of the actual out?
lay, and now it is desired to clap m $18,
000 or $20,000 more for tho benefit of col?
ored fire companies. No inorease in tho
strength of the department is necessary: :
We have now more men and more engines" !

additional expense, and an increased pro?
bability that the city will be unable to pay 1

without a large and long loon from some

probs-bly care but little, what becomes of
the oily debt, nor are they likely to reflect
that two quasi .independent Fire Depart,

The attempt to. make the negro firemen the
equal of the white fireman will, if perse?
vered ia, cause ill-feeling, if not t&e*rir,

double or treble their rates. This danger
io staring us in the face, whatever ear po
Uties or physical complexion. We repeat
it. A perseverance in the scheme of estab?
lishing a colored Fire Department in
Charleston, as proposed by Alderman T.
J Mackey, will, in all probability, lead to
the breaking up of the white Fire Depart?
ment. And the breaking up of the white
Firs Department will either make it impos?
sible to Insure our property at all, or so
raise the rates that insurance will be out
of the question. This ia a consideration
whioh goes home to every min who has a
doll-ir of his own. It will not touoh the
feelings of those who have all to gain and
not a oeut to lose. With the Mackeys it
way hare uo weight.
Even the old colored fire companies are
now, we understand, opposed to the passage
of Alderman Mickey's bill. They see what
the feeling of tbs community is, and they
have sense enough to per?oive that they will
be the losers ia the end if they deliberately
run oounter to the interests of the tax pay?
ers of the city. Unlike Alderman T. J.
Mackey, these colored mea have no parly
axe to grind. They do not wish to form a
new Union League ia the guise of a Fire
Department. They do not wish to organise
u body whose funotions will be "repeated
voting and controlling elections, instead of
running with the machine and putting out.
fires. They do not wish to see themselves
brought down to the level of those who will
only be firemen, on parade days and when
money may be drawn. We do not believe
that the proposed bill has more friends
among the respectable oolored people than
it has among our white citizens.
The motives whioh led Alderman T. J.
Mackey to introduce the bill are olear and
plain, and if he oanlash Counoil into adopt,
ing the bill he must be the first person to be
held responsible for whatever troubles or
dangers m*y follow.
Tine Locomotive Business.
