Whats Up??Dr. A. G., Alderman T. J"., and
Sheriff E. W. M Mackey left for Columbia
Sunday morning. When tho whole Maokey
family is poured at oh time into the lap of
Columbia it is evident that something is up?
that the wheel of politics is revolving tho
wrong way or is out of ordor, and thev desire
to put a nail 10 it to stop it, or to reverse tho
"order of its going "
The Late Riot?Tho investigation in the

New York yesterday afternoon, states that tho
steamship Champion, which left Now York Sat
urday, bioko her shaft Sunday while off Capo
Delaware and waB compelled to put back to

well on board. She will probably ri?ail on

The Neouo Militia in i? mbubo.?Tho
Augusta Chronicle f Sunday says :
Wo aro informed that a detachment oi
pet-bagger Scott's militia was in Hambut*
Friday night, on duty at the ood of tho bridge.
The cause of this warlike display wo <!id not
learn, but rumor has it that a raid of Georgia
Ku-Klux was ant'Cipated. Wo have never seen
u real live Ku-Klux, but ?c have the right
material here in Richmond to regulate Mr.
Scoot's ragamuffius it they over get on Georgia
soil. They might be induced to take Ham
burg within their jurisdiction m case of neces
sity , so that if tho valiant militia study their
own safety they will have to behave them
selves while in this vicinity.
The Savannah Base Ballots.?Alluding to
tbo invitation to the Savannah baso ballists to
make another visit to Charleston, tho Savan
nah Advortisor says :
We hardly think they will bo able to respond
to another invitation from their friends, tho
' Carolinas." at least immediately. It is quite
an undertaking to get together the eutiro nine
for a two days' holiday, and on t i-j last visit tho
Savannahs were deprived of the services of
two of their best, players at the last moment.
We can assure the "Carolinas" that nothing
which they could do on any future occasion
can increase the high esteem and cordial
fueudsbip felt lor them by our entire club.
Break on the Columbia and Acgusta
Railboad.?The late heavy rams caused a sud
den rise in the Bmall streams in the neighbor
hood of tho Bath Paper Mills, and a culvert on
tho Columbia and Augusta Railroad was blown
' up by the force of the water, and a large por
tion of the road bed washed away. Fortu
nately the tracks of tho Columbia and Augusta
and the South Carolina Railroads run parallel
at thin point, and tho passengers and baggage
by tho former aro transferred to tho latter at
Graniteville. The wash is quite largo, and it
will probably be ten days to two weeks before
the road can be put in running order.
Little Bobolabs.?Yesterday morning the
detectives arrested a mulatto and a negro boy
?neither over twelve years of age?upon tho
oharge of burglary. The negro boy confessed
that upon Friday night he, by means of a step
ladder procured and piaoed in position by the
mulatto boy, forcibly entered tho store of
Messrs. Goo. W. Stroob A Co., No. 277 King
street, and forced open the money drawer and
stole a small sum of money.
Early Sunday morning they, by the same
means, entered the confectionery store of Mr.
Kinsman, adjoining the store above mention
ed.' While thoy wero attempting to open Ihe
money drawer here the watchman came up
and sucoeedod in arresting the little negro.
Ho "peached" and caused the arrest of his ac
complice.
They are both confined at the detective of
fice. A long piece of plank, which they used
to force open doors, was captured with them.

Yesterday afternoon a negro woman named
Betsy Holland, about Thirty years of age, was
arraigned before Justice Mackey, charged with
committing t murderous assault upon John
Joues, colored.
It appears that John believed with Thacke
ray that each separate soul of us is on island
in iu<> great ocean of life, and looked for a fel
low ialo willing to help build a causeway which
should bind his and said isle together forever.
Behoving that Betsy was the other isle and
marriage to be the causeway that would ac
complish this desirable objeet, he made up to
Betsy, who, not liking to be sought after, so
informed John, But John, like other ricn,
only valuing those prizes whioh require eomo
labor to secure, persisted in his designs upon
her hand. Yesterday afternoon, after a little
quarrel, and while John was standing with his
baok to her, sho seized a large fork and en
deavored to impale him. but he fled she pur
suing. On the way she seized a rake and
struck him a severe blow on the forehead,
breaking the flesh and inflicting a very painful
wound. John ran into tLo house, when she
followed and made another assault upon him
with a knife. He then dodged and ran to
war^ the kitchen, when she seized a pot of
soup and threw it over him. He then went to
tho pump to wash bis wound, and was again
assaulted by tho fiend.
While before the Magistrate, Betsy said that
she "didn't have any use for men; they waa
treacherous animals; I never did like 'em, and
I don't see why they keep a courtin' of me."
In default of bail in the sum ot $300 to appear
for trial, she was committed to jail. Whilo on
her way there in charge of a constable, sho
met John, whereupon she -crabbed a stick and
went tor him, but he was fortunate enough to
elude the dutches of the she-devil.
Cbumb3.?The closing exercises of the paro
chial school of tho Afrioan M. E. Church, un
der the direction of B. H. Cain, took place in
Liberty Hall yesterday.
Daddy Cain expresses the opinion in the
Missionary Record that it ta not at all strange
that the Mayor should be "powerless" to quell
a riot, "surrounded as he has been, and still is,
with all the deadheads of the Republican party
to bear op, and with a Copserhead in his
boson stinging him to death, while hie life is
banging on a slender thread of political hemp."
The Lieutenant of the Detective force states
that he, ne t the Mayor, appointed the officers
of his force?the Mayor only oonflimed the
appointments.
The Savannah Advertiser says that tbo pres
ence of xnoBquitoeH there is as "fully demoral
izingr to ouo's analytical sequence of ideas as
the negroes of Charleston to good clothes and
good temper."
The sergeant who was shot at Castle Pinok
ney Saturday, was stilt in a most critical con
dition labt evening.
The Serious Family Club will meet to-night
From and after this date Officers Lovett and
1'ruall, of the Detective force will be on duty
at the South Carolina Railroad depot; Officers
Quirin and Levy at the Northeastern Reilroad
depot, and Officer Coat es at the Savannah and
Charleston Railroad depot.
The silver sugar bowl, ruffled for at Mr.
Mr. Drake's anotion room, on Friday nicht
last, was won by Mr. Dowhng. It was raffled
for the benefit of the torn ale orphans under the
care of the Sisters of Mercy. *
Dadd.v Cain commences a long editorial, de
nouncing the late riot, and asserting that the
mass of the colored people had nothing to do
with it and condemn all such proceedings,
with this sentence : "This commuai y has
been shocked with transactions whioh causes
the blusii o rise in the f ice of every law-abid
ing citizen." L'be colored people should read

THAT ANY bICK MAN SURVIVED THE
treatment of fifty years o ;o, must be considered a
proof that human brings are very hard to kill
The lancet, calomel, cantharidies an<i drastic pur
gatives were then the ordorof the day. The phv.
sitffcn played into tho hands of the apothecary, and
the unfortunate pitieut was drenched morning,
noon and night with prostrating medicine*. We
ive in a more rational and conscientious era. The
mportanco of supporting Nature in its conflict
with disease U now u,.,iBmood complaints in
themselves weakening are no longer aggravated by
artificial doplotion. Thoy are met with TONICS
that rally the vital powers and enable them to de
feat the enemy. Chief among theae aUics of Nature,
in Its battles with sickness, is
PI.*.C?Ta.TION B1TTKH9.
Tbl* wonderful vegetable restorative is the sheet
anohor of the feeble and debilitated. As a cordial
for tho aged and decrepid it has no equal among
stomachics. As a remedy for tho nervous weakness
to which the tender sex aro especially subject, it is
superseding every other stimulant and nervine.
In all climates, tropical, temperate or frigid, its acts
as a specific in every species of disorder which un
dermines the bodily strength and breaks down the
animal spirits. Wherever it is introduced it be
comes a standard article?a medicinal staple. Drug
gists, although thair profit upon it id small, find it
absolutely necessary to keep a preparation for which
everybedy inquires, and for which nobody will
accept a substitute. It is to-day the most popular
medicine in the civilized world. Extensively as it
is advertised, Iis best advertisement is the b?n?ficiai
result which uniformly folio w 4 its use. Every bottle
sold insures the sals of at least half a dozen more.
Unlike other stimulants it braces and fortifies the
system without exciting undue cerebral action.
The cheeiiog effect which it prodaoes upon the
