THE PBGI.-PT0 WOMAN. - We mentioned, ft
day or two aero, that a oolored woman had giv?
en birth to four children. Since then a large
number of coloied people have oalled upon .
her and gozad and gazed at the crowd on the
bed, one woman and four fine boys. While
this affair may be considered by some unlucky
for the woman, yet in ono way it has been for?
tunate for ber, as nearly every one of the'
sight-seers have given ber money-she alto?
gether receiving about two hundred dollars.
? STEALING MONET STROM A DBTTEB.~Yesteiday
afternoon two colored women went to the de?

her letters to the care of another woman. Tba
the said woman bad generally brought her let?
ters regularly, but last week only handed her.
?ne, when it wan known she had received two.
The one she received stated that ber^hnoband
had sent her forty dollars in soother lol tor,
sont by the same mail; and she therefore sup?
posed that tho woman bod the letter with the
money. Officer Nipson was sent to look into
the matter? and soon found the bits of the
missing le+ter in the woman's house. He (hen
commenced a search ior the m noy. which he
also found, and then the woman confessed that
ehe bad stolen it.

will, on behalf of his omradea, express their

of the excursionists, held on board the "Nick

you how thoroughly we appreciate the feelings
which dictated this generous and substantial
expression on the patt o? our Charleston

more complete their generous bounty and
whole-souled h3spitalilv,it is this act, which has
assuredly sealed a lasting feeling ot sympathy
and friendship between the two cities.
While we of Savannah have the (rood for?
tune to live under a oity government whioh
amply protects tho interests and the Uvea of
all our citizens, white aad colorod, and re?
ceives the support of both,-we would not for?
get to express the wish that the colored people
of Charleston may have their eyes as effec?

come, like those of our own fair city, peace?
able, law-abiding citizens, respected and en?
couraged by the entire community. Io con?

to you for your individual participation in the

While we feel that the attack uposrus Was en?
tirely uprovoked, and as entirely inexplicab'e

endeavored to gain the respect of the commu?

good law-abiding citizens, we cannot consider
that the Citizens of Charleston should feel un?
der any obligations to us from want of kind?
ness, consideration, or effort on their part to
protect us while m your city; yet coming as it
does, and so wholly unexpected by us, we feel
most sensibly the kindly feelings whioh have
dictated this generous offering. Allow me. sir.

you and the citizens of Charleston most hearti?

we may ever prove ourselves worthy of ymir

PAINFUL ACCIDENT-A LITTLE BO? LOSES HTS
T>Y.a_1 son of Mr?- V J. Lipp***, of Provi?

of this city, met with a most unfortunate acci?
dent at Lake Willoughby, Vermont, on the
18th of July, from the effects of whioh his leg
had to be amputated. The little fellow, who is
only twelve years of age, when on a visit here
last May and June, made many friends, who
will deeply deplore this unfortunate affair. It
appears that he was out hunting on tbe moun?
tains with bis guardian, and a rook weighing, j'
several hundred pounds, upon wbiob h 3 step?
ped, gave way and rolled over with him, ci n di- |
ing the right foot, severing the main artery
and mashing every, bone into pumice. The
little fellow bore the pain with marvellous for*
ti-Tide, as be also did the amputation of the
foot, which was found necessary the following
day._

THIS DOO THAT BIT A WOKA*.- THB NEWS
yesterday mentioned that a dot? belonging to
Mr. Connor had bitten a woman named Char?
lotte Washington. Charlotte had a warrant
issued against Mr. Connor, obarging him with
maintaining a ferocious dog. Yesterday the
case was called before Justice Morrison. Mr.
Moroso, counsel for Mr. Connor, proved that
there was no law to prevent a man from keep?
ing a ferocious dog; but it provided (hat a man
should be punished tor letting his ferocious
dog go at large. The warrant was then drop?
ped and a suit for damages commenced.

that sho was the mother.

THB WRIT OF HABEAS CORPUS should be
suspended in the case of a little negro boy
named Bob Lloyd, who is a notorious thief,
and whenever arrested and confined for an of?
fence manages to escape punishment by a writ
of habeas corpus or some other manouvre of
the law. Day before yesterday he stole a
watoh from a je ?voller ou King-street and ran
off. He was hotly pursued by the jeweller and
dropped the watoh, which was recovered. Bob
was subsequently arrested by a policeman,
and on yesterday was arraigned before the
Mayor. The jeweller not appearing, the Mayor
dismissed Bob, who, with a joyful lace, moved
rapidly from the police barracks. Officer Nip
son, who was near by, and having a little claim
on Bob's time, arrested bim. Bob pleaded
great innocence for awhile, but finally ac?
knowledged that he bad taken the watoh. He

THB CONSTITUTIONALITY OF THE HOMESTEAD
LAW.- At the present term of the Court of
Common Please, (Equity side) for Ooonee,
Judge Jas. L. Orr has pronounce J a decision
affirming the constitutionality of the Home?
stead law. After an elaborate review of the
reasons which influenced his opinion, the
Judge concludes : ^
I therefore adjudge that tho Constitution and
laws of this State, securing a homestead to
each head of a fimily, whether the debt or
lien existed at the date of the adoption of
the constitution or has been subsequently
created, is no violation of the Constitution of
the United States.
If I had grave doubts on the question, I
should feel it my duty to solve them by pro
nounoing the Constitution and laws of the
State no violation of the Constitution of the
United States. When the Circuit and Supreme
Court Judges of a State decide a 3tate law un?
constitutional, no appeal hes to the Supreme
Coori cf thc ?Joited. G^iuo, aud the citizen is
thereby denied the privilege of vindicating the
constitutionality of the State enactment bdfore
that august tribunal.
