Tn S JCE?RO RIOT OF MONDAY T,A?T.
The Disgraceful Affair at Describedbj
one ar ?be savannah Base Ball Club.
A spirited account in the Savannah Adver
riser of the visit of the Savannah Base Ball
Club to Charleston and their match game with
the Carolinas, cloees with the following de?
scription of the negro not :
THE ATTACK UPON THE BAND,
Which was one of the moat brutal and coward?
ly imaginable, was made as soon as they bad
fairly passed out of tb<- Citadel yard and turn?
ed to To down Meeting-street. The entire
front rank were knocked down by the infu?
riated mob and two of them jumped
upon a id beaten while down. Wholly unarm?
ed and tai?en by surprise, the members de?
fended themselves as best they could-one of
them baring the satisfaction of knocking
down three with his horn ere it became unser?
viceable-until the military came to their res?
cue and escorted them to the hotel, placing
tbe wounded men in an omnibus andmarohtng
with a g lard both in the van and rear. A
rant number of negroes swarmed about the
streets in the neighborhood ot the hotel, yell?
ing and shouting, cursing and using all man?
ner of abusive epithets. Their especial cause
ol enmity against the band seemed to be be?
cause "they were a d-d DemocratiJ crowd,"
and played "Dixie" tor those "d-d rebels m
grey umforme."
I SCENES AI THE HOTEL.
While the fighting was progressing near the
Citadel, the Savaunah Club, wbo bad returned
to the hotel, packed tneir baggage a id Bent it
to the steamer, were waiting and wondering
why tbeir friends came not to escort them to
the supper room, c o JD the cry was raised,
..They've attacked our band-let's to the
rescue," and a grand doable-quick was made
fer the scene .of encounter. The band and es?
cort were met on King street, and all returned
to tt e hotel, the negroes following and swarm?
ing on tho sidewalks, yelling, cursing and
using most abusive epithets towards the white
race generally. Frequently a cry to this effect
waa heard, "This is no Savannah." ''The col?
ored boys run this town." Frequently a cobble
steno or a brick would be thrown; one yountr
man was hit in this manner when near the
hotel. The negroes appeared particularly in?
censed against the soldiers, and shouted,
"lake away those bayonets and we'll soon
clean ont the d-d white sons o? b-s."
Arrived' at the hotel, a brief halt was
mada to assemble all the excursion?
ists, when the line of march was con?
tinued to the ball of the Vigilant Fire Com?
pany, where a most bountiful supper was
spread. Tbe guests from Savannah and
Charleston, to the number of ab JU t two hun?
dred, sat down, and an boor was spent most
agreeably. Mr. McCabe, president of the
''Carolinas." welcomed tbe "Savannahs" and
tbeir friends in a moat cordial, kindly and elo?
quent speech, hoping they would forget tbe
unpleasantness of the past hour and enjoy the
delights of the present. President May re?
sponded in a happy little speech, when, with?
out ceremony, the oneet was commenced upon
tue many good things so temptingly displayed.
Qaueral Anderson was loudiy called upon and
responded. Speeches was also made by the
captains of the Nines. The occasion was a
most delightful one, and will long be remem?
bered by all who participated.
THE MASCH TO THE BOAT.
Altogether too soon, as it seemed, tbe admo?
nition came from Captain King th it we must
embark, so the line of march was resumed, the
band with their battered instruments pi Ding
"Dixie," while tbe colored mob yelled "Kally
Bound the Flag, Boys," and with the vilest
sod most insulting cries, endeavored to briDg
OD a conflict. Several times it was necessary
to halt and olear the way with the bayonet-a
thing the mob seemed to entertain a great re?
spect for, dodging sway the moment une waa
punted at them, while those wbo were so
hardy ar to corns np too near and receive a
gentle prick from it danced and bowled m high
keys. On one street a cobble stone was thro wn
at the procession and smashed a gaslight
' over the heads of some of the party,
fortunately doing no other damage. Ab
though there wt rn thirty or forty revolvers in
the party, not a sm tr le shot was ?red by any of
the Savannah excursionists. Smarting as they
all were nuder the sense of the many indigni?
ties and insults heaped upon them, their for?
bearance was certainly commendable, and all
the mure so wheo it is considered that no pro?
vocation bad been given the mob by any ot tbe
party, the first disturbance having been caused
by a quarrel between soldiers and negroes. It
is bard to conceive why the vials of their wrath
should have been particularly poured out upon
the heads of peaceable, quiet and unoffending
visitors, u desa, as their cries would see n to
indicate, they proposed to sba r that " tbe col?
ored boys rna that town,'' and that Savannah
.iana, if they had rights at home, were enti?
tled to no consideration there.
The entire party praised the forethought,
coolness aud judgment of General Anderson, to
wbom tl ey were immediately indebted for Ute
military escort, for upon bis application to the
commandant it was tendered "witb pleasure,
air," after the imbecile Mayor had declared
himself, in broad day, nuable to quell tbe dis?
turbance and protect the guests of bis city.
