On these a brick wall is built of the strongest cement, two feet wide, one or two feet high, and fourteen feet 1 ong. Along the top of this wall run several rails an loch or two apart. A celebrated German minne singer, who adored birds, ordered that after bia death tbe sparrows should beted daily upon bis tomb. If Bergh ever dies there should bo a subscription taken up to give a \ bundle of hay to everjv needed horse in the vicinity of his last resting place, or some other appropriate memento. A New York evening paper gives tho following description of his latest invention. It says : "Mr. Bergh, the President of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, ha? gone into the transportation business. Many persons faucy that the Teu? tons assemble at night in their saloons to make enormous and intemperate exhibitions of their national beverage, and to make 9 beasts of , thom wivo <s.n Bat those who understand this valuable class of oar citizens, know that their gatherings are not bacchanalian, but social, and that conversation and not inebriation is tbe jft object sought after the labors of tho day. Those who are accustomed to the use of lager beer consumo daily but tittle of it; perhaps not much more than habitual tea drinkers do ?cups of tea. A boy who had suddenly recoiv ;d the freedom of a candy-shop would, .o doubt, lor a few days cause to disappear a great num . ber pf sticks ; bat soon his appetite would be cloyed, and sweat things would sink to a low rank among the luxuriea of app Ute, and be fer many days untasted. So it is with our sound headed Germans ; while hours are spent in BOCMI ytvterhalting, perhaps not more than ?fie pr.two glasses of beer are swallowed, and the brain is left ss unbenebett as before. Charleston anti her HOaid of Trade. It affords us great pleasure to -pubnsu this morning, in our advertising column*, an offer, from the Charleston Boar I of Trado, Of TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS for the best "Treatise (with statistics) upon ?the past and present trade of Charleston "the advantages to the Southeastern States <*of making Charleston their emporium and "centre of exchange-and the measures "which should bo adopted for preserving "and enlarging these advantages." The Charleston Board of Trade, though but little over ffcrco years old, has, on re peated occasions, given proof not only 0: vitality, but of the full maturity of man hoed. But a few weeks ago we okroniolec the purchase of a fine building, to be nsec by them as their hall of meeting, library ant reading room, and now we have .the pleas ure of recording another step in the righ direction-the effort to gather into oonve nient shape-a vade. tht'ciim tor reference the facts and figures connected with th commerce of our city. It may seem strang that this should not have been dode long agc Other cities, not only New York, Philadel phis, Baltimore, Chicago and Cincinnati but Louisville, Memphis, Nashville, Cleve laud, and in fact almost 'very importas city in the Union, annually publishes a TC port of the transactions of the year. Thi i is usually done under the ausplcea of th Chambers of Commerce or Boards of Trad< and is the only authentic source of inf or m f tion on such eubjeots-and to outsiders th only source accessible. True, our dall popers have, for many years, on the first < September, given elaborate statements < the principal transactions of the yeai These, however, confined themselves almoi exclusively to our staple exports; and, bi aides, being published in the "market" co umna of a morning paper, were not t widely read, nor so generally preserved, t would be the case with a publication brou gi forth linde?? llio ononninn . - * **- - *? . V Trade, taking a muon broader, soope, pr pared with muoh more o are, and issued i pamphlet or book form. We have oooasion to know that vei frequently letters of inquiry come hoi from abroad, both to the Mayor and i the Board of Trade, inquiring1 for ju such, information as it is designed to clio by the above named prize treatise; an hereafter, we hope, we shall not be undi the painful necessity of answering thei inquiries by stating that we have no stt tistics in Charleston; that it is not know how much cotton is sold here, and how mat passes in transitu; how muoh oorn, bacoi flour, hay, oats, lime, naval stores, lumbe are brought here, &c , &o., to say. nbthii of our shipping and jobbing trad a. Again we say, we are glad that the Booi of Trade has taken this matter in han and we doubt not that there is sursoie talent and industry among us to warral the hope that we shall be able to prese something to our sister cities, next fall, co oerning the business of Charleston, whioh we need not be ashamed. The lee Question. The artificial production of ioe has loi been an experiment with whioh every ty in science is familiar; but it is only of la that the process has been so simplified ai utilized as to render it, especially in wai latitudes, an important and profitai branch of manufacturing enterprise, recent invention by a Jerseyman, whi distills fresh and pure water from tho ocei brins, and than'in a few minutes oonvsr tho distilled water into solid blocks of cr j tal ioe, is attracting muoh attention jt now throughout the country. By a modi oation of tho eame p%i, fruits, meats a vegetables can be preserved in their pur and freshness for aa almost indefinite ? riod. Artificial ios, manufactured by t process, is now sold in largs quantities New Orleans, and. the system is oom! ioto general uss; but moro particularly the preservation of Texan beeves and th shipment to New York and other North? cities. The hold of a vessel can be read converted lato a mammoth refrigerator, that' tons upon tons of perishable prodi o an be safely oar ri od on long voyages; i the same principle oan be eucoessfully plied to the smallest refrigerator, and made available for the convenience of most limited household. Thc apparat whioh is exceedingly simple, admits of production of any temperature desil even as low as one degree below zero, has been found, however, that thirty degrees, three above tho freeling po suffioss to prevent the decomposition meat, and that is thc temperature usc? tho large meat-house at New Orleans, rapidly is this important and wonderful vsntion coming into USS, especially in Southwest, that it would not be surprit if, in thc oourse of a few years, tho si mont of New England ioe to the South States should bava become a thing of past. - ???-????-1 IN TH a anonymous versos on the Pi Jubilee whioh we print to-day, wo tl wo recognise tho peculiar wit and tho licking stylo of Dr. Tioknor, of Ooorgli Our Field? ?M?t H oie?io. HESOuncss or ?BTC SOUTH RUN FIXUM AWD FOR? ESTS, MEDICAL ECONOMIC AL ASD AOBIOUXTU BAL; being alao a Medical Botany of the Hoot horn States, with Practical Information on thf Useful Properties of the Trees, Plants and Shrubs, by Francis Poy TO Porcher. M. D. Charleston: Walker, Evana Sc Cog swell, 1869. We are glad thal Dr. Porcher bas met suffi? cient encouragement to warrant bim in issuing a second edition of his very valuable wo rk. The book was written and published during .the late.wai? b? dir.?etiou Qf .the ?surgeon-Gen? eral; and what with a small edition originally pruned, and the general destruction by the war of every species of book, the work had alroady become rare, and much sought after. Weare pletstd, therefore, now to see our old friend reappear, and dressed by those famed literary tailors, whoso names appear at the foot of the title page, not in the dingy "Con? federate Grav"of ?he first edition, but in splen? did paper, typography and binding. A book like this is a great desideratum bofo at this time. The war, from necessity, threw our people largely upon their own resources, and long forgotten "domestic rem?dies" and swamp doctors' yarbu were again brought from their obreure recosaos. and even received ''a patronizing pat on the, back from tho great dons-of the J? acuity. Here, then, are vast Undeveloped resources, and likely to remain undeveloped, at least in a great measure, vfbr - the want of intelligent guidance. Not long since the writer endeavor? ed ' o procuro a book that should contain di? rections for the unlearned, how to gather and prepare such of these indigenous roots, herbs leaves, barks, seeds, ftc, as are sought for in the markets ot the world; but after consider? able inquiry he fouud that there is no book ex? tant that fives Buch informa ion. Dr. Por? cher'a honk COD tains this information, with minute directions where to find, and when to gather the articles described, lt is, perhaps, too expensive for many who would.like to pos? sess such a work. Still, we can confidently say tbwt it is the very best treatise on this s'-bjeot to be had tu the United States. ' ' ? Some of our readers in the interior may be surprised to learn, that herbs, weeds, and other snob ''trash," that they- have seen ''run to seed"All tlieir lives, should! have a marketable [ value, tench, however, is the osee. From a catalogue before ns of articles, advertised for by. Dr. Wm.
