Saber, of Newberry, for final discbarge from bankruptcy, was referred to Registrar Jaeger, and final hearing ordered before the Com t at Greenville on the lOtii of j August. In the cases of the United Slates vs. George L. Black, Nathaniel O. Tilton and William Gregg, Jr., motion to set aside the verdicts rendered on the Uh of June, 1869, the argu? ments were heaid, after which the motion was granted and the causes transferred to the Dis tri ct Court for trial at tbs October term. Application of Eugene Esdra, of Charleston, for copyright, was granted according to act of Congress. The copyright was for "French conversation playing cards," with the English translation, affording bjtb amusement and in? struction. Petitions of Jo; eph D. Blanding, Ormsby Blanding, Warren H. Five hundred out of the large number of un? employed negroes in Charleston want to go to work. The following letter bas been sent to ns by a resident of Ward No. 8, and is published as ? warning to our citizens : CHARLESTON. July 13.1869. TO TBE EDITOB OF THE NEWS. Yon would greatly oblige some ot the resi? dents of the Upper Wards, if yon could give us some information m reference totnesenegto census takers. Last week a negro went around in Ward No. 8, taking the names of every per? son, old and young, male and t?male, their age, &o., Ac; thu week, another black negro comes around with a big book, and says "I is toe 'eeasor.'' Ht wants to know bow much silver spoons, forks, and other ware yon keep io the house, and what you value it at. He does not itemize the articles, but puta down tbeir value, with the owner's name. Also, the value of tour furniture, Ac. If he is in any way doubtful, he demands to be shown tbe pieces, and marches in private bed chambers, with his dirty blaok assistant, sud scrutinize i everything. Yesterday afternoon, this black devil, "the City Sesear," went into a lady's noose in Spring street, and not being satisfied about tbe value of the silver plate, dem inded to s e it. The husband of the lady fortunately coming in at tbe time, nskeithe negro to show hts authority, when he said, -Tee been 'looted to *he. City Sesear, by Mr. Pillsbury, and be tole me to go round " He was ordered ont of ;he house, and wheq near the door exclaimed: 'TU bab dis bouse marked.'' I would like you to caution our up-to wu residents to look out for these thieves, for such is surely their aim. 1 am, with respect, *?* Wo have taken some trouble to obtain trust" worthy information npon this subject, and have received 'rom Census Taker B. C. De Larsre the following particulars: .The City of Charleston is allowed six assis? tant census takera, who are: W. H. Gibbes, N. Levin and W. L. Gowan, white, and George Lee, W. R. Jervey aud P. L. Miller, colored. Iheee six have employed and pay two other census takers, viz: John Robinson and Peter Morgan, colored. No other person than those named bas authority to ask for any informa? tion of any oitizeo for census purposes. Each census taker is provided with printed books, and ia required to obtain the number of persons of different ages in eaoh family, dis? tinguishing white and colored; also a report of tb* quantity of farm and gard n produce rais? ed during the year, the number of animals, tbe quantity ot machinery, and other statistics of a like description. This the censos takers are authorized by the law to require to be given them, under penalty of a fine, bot they have no r ghi to ask f.r any information in regard to plate or Bpoona. Any men who have asked for this, have nothing bot robb ;ry in view. Every householder should be on bis guard against them. DeLarge seems to be anxious that every? thing should go on smoothly, and requests that immediate complaint be made if there be any incivility or impropriety of behavior on the part of any of his assistants. COLUMBIA ITEMS.-The convention of rail? road presidents and superintendents, connect? ed with the through line from New Orleans to Washington, was in session at Columbia yes? terday. Mr. Isaac Hope, a young Englishman, who bas been in this country only a few months, and waa living with Mr. John Davis, died very soddenly on Wednesday from the effects of sunstroke. Sergeant George King, of Company H, 8th United States Infantry, also died suddenly on Wednesday morning from the effects of heat. Hot a Candidate. TO THE EDITO B OF THE NEWS. This is the second lune I have noticed my name in the colnmns of THE NEWS, in connec? tion with others, as a candidate for Commis? sioner of Markets and Alms House. While I believe Alderman Collins meant well in offer? ing mine and the names of several other citi? zens in this community, yet in justice to my? self 1 beg the ose of your valuable journal to say it was unauthorized by me, and as Ur. Collins acknowledges, was unsolicited by other gentlemen whose names be placed on the tickets. JULIOS RODMTLLAT. A Car?. CHARLESTON, July 15,1869. TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW*. The Courier, of this date, in commenting upon the cost to the State of feeding the pri? soners in our county jails, makes a most vio? lent assault npon the truth of the old adage, "Figures never lie." As its erroneous state? ments are calculated to mislead the few per? sons who read that ancient and splenetio jour? nal, I beg leave to correct them through your colamos. Error No. 1. "There are sixteen hundred prisoners In the various county jails .through? out the State." This is evidently a gross exaggeration, as there axe but thirty-one (SI) jails in the State, and according to "this estimate they average fifty- two prisoners each. The records show tbat our county jails aver? age about Hf teen (15 ) prisoners each, making a total of four hundred and sixtv-five (463) in? stead of sixteen hundred (1600,) as stated by tbe Courier. Error No. 2. ''It is well known tnat the ra? tion of each soldier in the United States army eosts the government just eleven (II) cents." The commissary at this poet will inform tbe Courier "that the ration of each soldi sr in the United SUtes army costs the government just:' twenty-four cents and seven one hundredths of a cent (247-100,) and the commutation value of such ration is thirty (30) cents. It is a well known fact that the government purchases its armv supplies in large quantities and at tbe lowest wholesale rates, hence the cost of the army ration to the government is no criterion by which to determine what it should cost the various sheriff's to feed tbe prisoners in our county jails. The army ration, taking quanti? ty and quality, cannot be purchased in this market, at wholesale rates, for less than thirty five (85) oents. The Courier, when it advo? cates an allowance of only sixteen (16) oents to feed a prisoner, must have in view the bill of fare that led Oliver Twist to beg for "one more bean."_ FACTS. A Caard. First, thanking you for your confi? dence in believing that I would not swindle a poor freedman out of tuenly-fioe dollars, 1 shall proceed, in as brief a manner as possible, to make the fo lowing statement of the a ff nr. Dennis took counsel of a law firm, and, through their advice, refused to pay the balance of the award. 1 took no farther steps to stop the proceeding* h court, as the boy had left the otate. The money is still m my hands; I have repeatedly tendered it to Mr. Karney, who, not more than two weeks ago. told me that he de? sired to correspond with the boy before taking it. It is distinctly understood that the money can be drawn at any time by the boy, or any one authorized by bun. This is all I know of the affair.
