yesterday, and fined five dollars each, for
having a ball without a permit, on Oalhonn

language._

THE PHILADELPHIA LINE OF STEAMERS.-The
fine steamer J. W. Everman, Captain Snyder,
will resume her place on the Philadelphia line,
leaving on Saturday morning, and making
regular trips with tbe Prometheus. Messrs.
J. & T. Getty are the agents of the line in this
city. _
BED HOT AND STILL H EATING was the mildest
term that was applied to the weather yesterday
morning. * On Accommodation wharf the mer?
cury reached 98. At one P. M. it was 95 in THE
NEWS office, out when placed in the sun soon
registered 127. The thunder storm in the
afternoon cooled the temperature consideiably,
and at three o'clock the mercury had sunk to 88
? degrees. _ _
A CHILD WHIPPED TO DEATH.-A day or two
since a negro wom^n living at Myrtle Qrove,
on the Oombahee River, took her child into tbs
wools, whipped her severely and want off.
.Shortly after she called the child, and receiving
no answer, went to the spot where ?he was left
and found ber dead. Magistrate Coloook held
au inquest, and a verdict was given in accord?
ance with tbs above statement.
COLLECTOR OP CUSTOMS.-Vp lo the present
wrritin? neither Dr. Mackay nor Mr. Clark hs?
returned to the city. The new Collector, who
has the po wer to appoint five clerks, eight
inspectors, two watchmen, two porters, and
four boatmen, will make a dean sweep of tbs
old officers. The two appraisers are appoint?
.ed by the President on the recommendation of
the Secretary of the Treasury. It is stated
that Mr. Clark has offered to retain A'dermap
T. J. Macks} and Mr. Arthur Mackey, but both
have refused to reman?. The friends of Dr.
Mackey are Still confident, that the appoint
ment of Mr. Clark will not be confirmed by
abe Senate. Governor Geary, of Pennsylvania,
is, with other prominent men, laboring zeal?
ously in the interests of ur. M., who still
declares that he has no desire for the office,
but only opposes Mr. Clark beoause he ls not
acceptable in any way either to Bepublioans or
Democrats, neither party knowing where to
.placo him.
AoKNOWLEDOTMTiNTd.-Tho Sisters, of Our
Lady of Mercy return their grateful acknowl?
edgments for the generous contributions of
the following gentlemen of the City of New
York, through tho influence of Mr. Edward
Daly, No. 224 Chambers-Btreet, New York:

J. Quinlan, Esq., William-street, two cases of

NEW DBT GOODS HOTJSE.-Mr. Henry Camp
sen, who for many years past has been con?
nected with the firm of UGerhardt St Campson,
has withdrawn from it and opened a dry
goods establishment at No. *?? Eins street.
Ho has purchased an entirely new stock in New
York. It is a stock exactly suited for this sec?
tion, and could only have been seleoted by a
person of experience, to which title Mr. C. can
most justly lay claim. In selecting, he had in
view both quality and cheapness, and we
venture to assert that at no place in the city are
the ral es more reasonable. Mr. C., in addi?
tion to his experience, is energetio, koo .va tbo
wants of the people, and is determined to suit
them, m which effort he cannot fail of succ?s?.
UNITED STATES COTJBT, JULY 14-HOK. GEO.
8. BBYAN, JUDGE, PBESIDIWG.-The following
business was disposed of to-day:
In the case ot J. M. Blacklerey, creditor, vs.
Wm. T. Farley, petition to establish lien, it
was ordered that the creditor have leave with?
in thirty days to establish bis lien.
Petition of Joseph L. Dowdle, of Chester, for
Anal discharge, was referred to Regis tr ar Claw
son for final hearing.
In the case of Thomas W. Harllee vs. W.
W. Harllee, petition to establish lien, the
r jport of the registrar was confirmed.
The Judge ordered that notico bo published
in the proceedings of court that the Admiralty
Docket {would be called and finally disposed
of on next Friday, at 10 o'clock.
WHAT PBOMTSES DID.-THE NEWS learns that
when Joseph H. Jenks was canvassing for the
office of City Inspector he very unwisely prom?
ised work to all.the colored men who applied.
The result of the rash promises was shown yes?
terday. About five hundred negroes besieged
the lower portion of the City Hall building, in
whioh are located the detective office, sheriff
and inspector's offices. The negroes, in their
efforts to see the Inspector, pushed in at the
front and back doors and endeavored to get
through the iron gratings of the windows.
If any one showed himself at a window from
the inside, a hundred or more faVtitions were
shoved at him, and he was asked if he "didn't
know Pete," or "Jun," or "Sam," as the sase
might be, "who he had promised work
to." By nine o'clock the crowd became
so disorderly that a dosen policemen were
detailed to prevent them from* crowding 4
around the doors and windows which had ex- >
duded tho air and nearly suffocated those
within. Policemen were also stationed inside
at the front and rear doors to prevent the en?
trance ol ali office.and envVoyment seekers,
ibo crow J '.;inr; around tho building until two
o'clock, and then slowly Oin parsed. It is un

1 c u. U.-. bel i b< Hire tho meeting on Fri
i dav night last, WUP. Aldermen Geddings, Pot?
ter au i Curmiugbam. Owmgto the lateness
of Ibo boi r, they wore tn I voted for at tbat
aieetiug, bu iii :e Alderman Col?
lins stated substantially that there waa corrup?
tion amour those who hid promised to vote
the caucus ticket arranged that day; he had
promised to vote a certain way, and would do
so; he would vote for any man on the ticket,
no matter how repulsive he might be.
Now, as we have eaid, Alderman Collins
wanted to be a trustee. Tuesday night the
caucus tioket was put up, so was another tick?
et, the last by Alderman Collins. On one side
chere was an advertisement of the drug store
of M. H. Collins (Alderman Collins) Sc Co.,
stating how their "fever and ague remedy"
could "cure chills and fever," on the other;
"Trustees Charleston College-T. J. Mackey,
J. F. Greene, M. H. Collina." T. J. Mackey's
name was put on tho tioket to draw himself
and friendsjto support M. H. Collins.
Although Alderman Collins' ticket was ar?
ranged for tho "?haky," either politically or
physically, it did not work, and the regular
cauous ticket was elected. He proposed tor
Commissioners of the Alms House the follow-,
ing tioket, on the back of an advertising card
also, which was defeated : A'derman E. W. M.
Mackey; Alderman E. P. Wall, oolored; Alder?
man Philip Thorne, colored; Alderman B. H.
Hampton, colored; kldbrman T. B. Small, ool?
ored; Alderman David Barrow; Alderman Ti. F.
Wall, oolored; Malcolm Brown, Jr., colored;
Julius Boumiliat, partner of Collins; Bichard
Hogan; H. A. Duo, St.; Alderman M. H. Col?
lins. 4
Alderman Collins' manner of introducing his
tioketa on the back of his advertising cards
baa occasioned considerable comment, some aa-1
serting that lt waa a shrewd advertising dodge,
and others that he was not willing to pay the
ex' ra stamps necessary to obtain new cards.
. If an advertising dodge, it is something new,
set the Alderman's ticket wouldn't godown.
CBUMBS. -The firemen were called out late
Tuesday night, but there waa no fire.
The City Treasury, yesterday, was enriched
tithe amount of $85 by the fines imposed by
toe Mayor.
The new benches on the Battery are made of
unseasoned yellow pine, consequently persons
who have sat upon them remained longer than
they intended, and besides the loss of time,
ruined their clothing. .
lt would be a great accommodation to the
ladies if the Street Ballway Company would
place a platform from the Battery terminus to
the sidewalk.
Alderman T. J. Mackey denies the truth of
fie reports in yesterday's Courier, that Ben?
jamin Boils, one of the sureties on Sheriff
Maokey'a bond, and John C. Fremont, another
surety, baa threatened to withdraw. '
W. ft. Mitchell, the Clerk of Council elect,
has not before thia taken posse ?ion of hi?
office, beean ie. aa he says, the preeent incum?
bent has not been ready to tura over the books
and papers, and will en cr upon the discharge
or hie duties- at 19 o'clock to-day.
It appears that we were in errOr in stating
yesterday that all the Aldermen, save Small
and McKinlay, colored, were at the Jenks' en?
tertainment on Monday evening, as wa have
alnoe learned that two others, Geddings' and
Potter, were not theta.
Ferdinand Carri, a native of Columbia, has
created quite a furore among the music-loving
ci Uzona of Washington by his performances on
tho violin. Oo Friday night last ho visited the
White House, and entertained Preaident Grant
and family with several choico selections. '
Tn* CATERPILLAR ur FLORIDA.-The Savan?
nah Newe makes the following extracta from
letters received by a factor in that city, from
ro able parties in Florida, in relation to the
appearance of the caterpillar in that State:
GAINESVILLE, FLA., July 9,1869.
The caterpillar has made ita appearance be?
yond a doubt. There is scaroely a cotton weed
on our place that has not one or more leaves
eaten. We are no alarmist and looked upon
the cry raised some weeks ago as unfounded;
bnt we can dooeive ourselves no longer; tbe fly
can be seen in the evening in countless num?
bers.
ELLXSVTLLB, FLA., July 6,1869.
The pest of Flori la has commenced ita work
of destruction in Alaohua County, andi have
heard of some in Columbia, but have not seen
any on my farm. The cotton crop is growing
very fast, and if it were not lor the worm a
fair crop could be raised; but Alacbua is one
of our largest plant?os; counties, and as they
ore already there the crop will necessarily be a
short one.
THE DETECTIVE FORCE.-At tho last meeting
of Council an ordinance was introduced relative
to the Deteotive force of Charleston. The or?
dinance provides that the Detective force shall
be entirely independent of the Police D apart?
ment. To the Detective force of Charleston
the citizens have bean, in a great measure, in?
debted for the infrequency of crime, as it is
well known that when the detectives have been
"put upon a case" it has been thoroughly
"worked up," this of course deterring the
wicked from prosecuting their nefarious de?
signs. For this reason the Detective force
should be sustained. Those who are informed
assert that a Detective force to be efficient
must be independent of the Police Depart?
ment, and must have its own officers 9nd its
own rules aad regulations. If smh be the
oase, and there seems to be no reason to doubt
it, Council should, al the next mooline:, adopt
the ordinance, lt is essential that tbe city
should continne to have what it hachad for
several mouths past-an industrious, compe?
tent deteotive force.
