Carbla. As has been stated bj TEE NEWS, there was a srreat a mono t of caucusing by the Pillsbury faction in reference to the offices of the Police Department. This caucusing And canvassing has occupie 1 nearly all of the time of said faction for several weeks past, and up to half past one o'clock Friday afternoon there was a diversity of opinion. The Slay or had pledged himself and his faction to the support of Major R. H. Willoughby, but five of the faction, viz : Aldermen Voigt, Cunningham, Geldings, How? ard, colored, and McKinlay, colored, not only refused to support him, but declared them? selves in favor of Hendricks as the more effi cioitof the two candidates, and at the hour mentioned formally seceded from the caucue. The leader of the liackeyites bearing of this secession, summoned his adherents and bj a well-timed flank movement formed a junction with the secessionists, and after a collation ni the police barracks,'where champagne and various refreshments were lavishly furnished by Captain Hendricks, the seven Mackey i tea (T. J. and E. W. M. Mackey, Barrow, L. F. and E. P. Wall, colored, Thorne, colored, and Hampton, colored.) and the re?us tnt five Pillsbury i tea screed to support Captain Hen? dricks for Chief, Lieutenant Chapman for First, and W.N. Taft for Sec and Lieutenant- Tat, rn their judgment, bring an active Repub? lican, and Hendricks and Chapman almost Republicans. , Tue PUlsburyites (the Mayor, Potter, Greene, Collins, Urn all, colored, and Brown, colored,) arranged their tickets as follows: Major R. H. Willoughby, Chief, T. B. Chapman, First, and Benjaman Holloway, colored, son of Alderman Holloway, 8econd Lieutenant. They hoped that the fire who had seceded would think bet? ter of their action, return into the fold of the faithful, and vote the Willoughby ticket, and therefore came into the Council chamber con? fident of success. The election resulted in Hendricks receiving 12 votes, T. B. Chapman 17, W. N. Taft 12, Holloway, colored, 6-Hendricks, Charmian and Taft, tb? nominees of the Mackeyitea and "splits," being elected, much to the disgust of the "faithful," and especially of Alderman Hol? loway, who, on being commiserated with ia the Council chamber by Alderman Potter, in? dignantly denounced what he termed the treachery of those with whom he had acted, and bitterly bemoaned his failure to get his "price." The flank movement of the Mackeyitea not only defeated the Willoughby ticket, but also occasioned the election of several of their friends as Commissioners of Markets, and es? pecially in throwing off the ticket Julius Rou milla t and placing thereon and electing Thomas Aiken, a colored botcher, weighing about three hundred pounds, who is said to be quite a respectable odored man, and of some uoeigM among his class. The result of this election is due to what is termed the anti-Massachusetts party, (com? posed of native Radicals.) which is rapidly growing in numbers, and who have fer their object the expulsion from the State of all carpet-baggers-nearly all of whom are from Massachusetts, hence the name anti-Maesa ohusetts. To this party Major Willoughby owes his defeat, and all members of the Radi . cal patty, not natives of Charleston, will here? after meet with strenuous opposition from this anti-Massachusetts clique. W. Clark left there for Charleston on tbe 3th with his commission as Collector of this Port in his pocket, and also an order to super? sede Dr. A. G. Mackey. He is expected to reach hereon Wednesday. Dr. M. will pro? bably arrive to-day. Mr. Clark will make a clean sweep in the Customhouse. It is not jet known who will be appointed to fill the positions of the retired officers, nor what will be the proportion of colored men. The friends of Dr. Mackey are confident that the Senate will not confirm the appointment of Mr. Clark. _^_ _ BRUTAL MUADKS AT ASEBPOO FERRY_TBS News on Saturday learned the following re? garding a brutal murder committed on Tues? day last, by three negroes, at A-hepoo Ferry, on the Charleston and Savannah Railroad, thirty-seven miles from the city: A negro man, it appears, had interfered with the do? mestic arrangements of another negro. The wronged husband, with two friends, went to the plantation where the disturber of his peace lived, and, without warning, shot him. The negro fell and was then hacked to pieces with hoes by the two friends. The victim's head was beaten in, and his legs and arma cut off. The husband has escaped, bat his companions are under arrest. TEE Row ct TEE FIREPROOF BUILDING on Friday afternoon, between F. C. Miller and Mark Reynolds, durinsr which the latter gave the former a severe drubbing despite the dis? play of his pistol, waa concluded then and there, and all parties appeal d to be satisfied. But not so. Saturday morning F. C. Miller ap? peared before Meg ?Berate Mackey and sued out a warrant for the arrest of Reynolds, on the charge of assault and battery. Reynolds was arrested, and gave bonds in the sum ot $500 to appear for trial at the General Sessions of the State Court in November next. It is but jus? tice to Miller to state that be was knocked down once when not even aware of the pres? ence of bis adversary. Omen DEMANDED. -On Saturday last Mr. P. J. Coogan, who was recently elected City Assessor, applied at the Assessor's office to Mr. W. N Hashes, late incombent, abd de? manded it, showtog bis authority. Mr. Hoghes, who has with other city officers an rouncedhis intention to contest the recent election, refused to vacate. Similar demands will be made by others of the newly elected officers to-day. As the Mayer bas, under Al? derman T. J. Mackey's resolution, the right to call on the police force to remove all < fficers who refuse lo yield to their ''duly elected and qualified successors," it is presumed that the services of the force will bo brought into re? quisition to-day. The report that the Mayor has obtaiaed the field battery on Citadel Green to shel out the refractory officers lacks con? firmation. SECOND LIEUTENANT OP POLICE.-On Satur day, Ur. W. N. Taft, who was elected Second Lieutenant af Police on Friday night, filed his bond for $1500, Messrs. Thomas Carrah er and J. H. Jeuks sureties, and will enter upon his du? ties to-day. Mr. J. 0. BRYAN, JUDGE, PRESIDING-The following business was disposed of to-day: In the District Court.-In the case of the United States vs. twenty-four packages of to? b?ceo found at Columbia, in the property of tho Charlotte and South Carolina Railroad Company, the packages, on motion of the Hon. D. T. Corbin, were forfeited to the United StafeB. In the case of the United States vs. fifty packages of tobacco, found at the same place, the same disposition was made. COLUMBIA ITEMS.-It is said that nine sepa? rate and distinct bids for tho completion of the Blue Bidge Railroad were submitted to the commissioners at their recent meeting. Messrs. Wade Hampton, L. D. Childs, and J. G. Gibbes who opposed the recent railroad con? solidation at Columbia, because "they did not desire to see the capital a wayside station," were left out in the election of the new board. A preliminary contract was executed on Saturday, between the Executive Committee of the Bine Bidge Bailroad Company and Messrs. J. Y. Cris?ill, John J. Patterson and James M. Seilt ra, of Pennsylvania, for the construction of the road, including tunnelling and super? structure, Ac-the entire road to Knoxville to be completed in two years from the 1st of August next. The New York Herald of Thursday, in its money article, says: In Southern seouritiei the new North Caro? linas were weak and pressed for sale, owing to the issue of a large number of new bonds to tbe Western Noreb Carolina Railroad Company, dated April 1 i860. Tennessees were more steady, and in some quarters there was a feel? ing that the interest would be paid np, as tbe railroads would be forced to liquidate their indebtedness to the State. Louisiana levee bonds are higher for the Bixes, but weak in the eights. South Carolinas were weak under numerous sales, some suspiciously like "washes." The whole market was heavy, however, in sympathy with the general course of the day. From a party who has been engaged in making the arrangements with the owners, THE NEWS learns that the house will be reopened on the 20th of October by Messrs. G. W. Parker A Brother. An engineer will be here next week for the purpose of making arrangements for an eleva? tor of the latest model. Messrs. Bussell A Co., of Boston,.have been commissioned to supply $75,000 worth of th? best fhsjptnre. Tbe pro? prietors propose to charge $3 53 per day, and at the bar, wbioh is to be luxuriously fitted iup and lavishly supplied with the best of liquors, the charge, pet drink will only be fifteen cents. This last item, we are nell aware, is of no in? terest to any one, and it is only inserted to show that the proprietors are determined to be reasonable in their rates. Mr. G. W. CRUMBS.-Alderman Barrow wants to be Keeper or the Poorhouse. The Mayor disposed of two or tbree vagrants on Saturday. Two little negro boys, respectively named Thomas Grant and Joseph Waring, got into a difficulty Saturday, in Calhoun-atreet, during which Waring stabbed Gi ?at in the shoulder. Both were arrested. The turpentine still of Mr. A. A. Goldsmith, which was burnt about two weeks since, has been rebuilt. Tbe Legal Debating Society will meet at the Charleston Library to night, at eight o'clock. The attention of the Street Inspector ia called to the condition of some of the cellar doors on Queen, between East Bay and State streets. In Columbia, whenever a man is proposed as a candidate for two or more offices, his sup? porters say that they are going to "Corbinize" him. Alderman Holloway, colore!, is very indig? nant because his son was not elected Second Lieutenant of Police, and, it is reported, threatens to resign his Aldermanic seat, but before doing so will ascertain what effect it will have upon tho recognition of Cuba by tho Uoitod States, and upon tbeproposed repairing of the Great Wall in china. Dr. A. G. Mackey wa9 present at the meeting of the Executive Cornmittee of the Union League, held in New York on Thursday last.
