DROWNED.-A colored man named David Tance, on Mouday last, paid a visit to his re?a-. tiona living on Wappoo Creak, a short distance from the city. In the afternoon, while bathing in the creek, he was drowned. His body was recovered, and on yesterday Coroner Whiting held an inquest-the verdict of the jury being that the deceased came to his death by drown? ing._ LOST ANO FOUND.'-A pocketbook containing greenbacks, specie and valuable papers was jost on Tuesday and advertised in THE NEWS of yesterday. It was found by A. AspinaU, a colored man, who at once looked in the column0 of Tura NEWS, saw the advertisement and im? mediately took the pocketbook to the owner. TON.-A travelling correspondent of the New York Tribune lateiy wrote a long letter from Charleston, from whioh we take the following: It is the dull sanson of the year, and the large trading bouses are doing little. Most of the damage doue by the bombardment is re? paired, but the rains of tue great fire of 1861 remain. Orange, pomegranate and fig trees are seen every? where, and rosea are in profusion. Tn Bo ABD OF TRADE-A meeting of the Board of Trade was held last evening, the President, Henry Cobia, Esq., in the chair. The following gentlemen were unanimously elected members of the Board : Captain T. J. lockwood, Henry Daly, L. T. Potter, and B. K. Neufriile. The President read a letter from a committee .ot citizens of Columbus, Ga., concerning a proposed railroad from Columbus to Weat Point, and, on motion, the following was .adopted: Resolved, That the letter tn relation to the railroad from Columbus, Ga., to West Point, be referred to a special committee of fi'-o. with Swer to attend the meeting referred to. and at the Secretary bo requested to ascertain at once when the said meeting will be held. Taft aro spoken of for First Lieutenants, and Officer Philippy, of the Detective foroe, for Second Lieutenant.. .It is asserted that the vote for these offices will not be by factions, hut a general sort of an affair. CRUMBS.-There was only one caso before the Mayor, yesterday-a drunken fellow-who was hued and discharged. J. C. Holloway, son of the Alderman, who was elected a portwarden Tuesday night, is just out of the Lunatio Asylum. The members of the Mackey faction were yesterday loud in their regrets that D. T. Cor bid did not receive more of the city offices, but consoled themselves with tho belief that there is still hope for him. The Pillsbury faotion.it is understood, has gone back on Major Willoughby, and Captain Hendricks will be re-elected. Large groups of oolored and white men col? lected about the City Hall yesterday and ques: tioned one another about the correctness of the newspaper reports of the eleetion, trusting that they were incorrect, and consequently there was a possibility of their haring been elected. Unfortunately for them, the reports were correct, and the aspirants were left dis? consolate. Magistrate DeLarge (colored) is, we learn, engaged in an attempt to have Magistrates Bunah, Kauapaux, Moline and Plummeau re? moved from office. Yesterday morning Officer Philippy found under the stone-crossing at the corner of King and George street a considerable number of bits of silver spoons and forks. The bits were portions containing the initials of tbe owner, and were evidently cut off and placed there by I the thief for fear of detect! jn. The bits are at the detective's office, and can be obtained by proving property. % The disappointed office-seeker, who on Tues? day night stole from the Council Chamber an umbrella belonging to a member of the press, is requested-to return it to this office. It ia of ? cotton material, and was only purohased for use at Council meetings and other stormy oc? casions. A NEW THEATRE.-On T lesday night last the Freundschattsbuud held their regular monthly meeting, and, we learn, took final action in re? gard to the building of a new hall. As we learn, the reports of the committees in reference to tho matter were heard, and it was then decided to purchase the lot at the southwest corner of Meeting and George streets, on whioh the society propose to build at an early day a large and handsome three story brick building, fifty by one hundred feet, fronting on Meeting-street. The first floor will be fitted up for the social uses of the mem? bers of the club. The second story will be so arranged that theatrical and operatio perform? ances can be conduoted in it. This hall will be larger than the Hibernian Hall, and will have a commodious stage, with all fixtures necessary for performers and for placing the pieces on the etage to the best advantage. The lot will oost $6500, and the building, when completad, probably $25,000. It is with the greatest pleasure we announce the above, and we sincerely trust that the building will be commenoed at an early day. Something of the kind has been long needed, and it will be a souroe of gtatkflcation to all classes to know chat there is a fine prospoot of the want being supplied very soon. TERRIBLE COMFL AOBTION IN HOBBY COUNTY. We learn from the Horry News that one of the most extensive fires ever known in that section has been raging for the last two weeks in All saints Parish. It broke out near the upper end of Ocean Bay, not far from the seashore, ani has reaohed the Wilson estate lands, on the Waooamaw, six miles above Con way boro', having burned over a distance of nearly twenty 2^,l?a. The average breadth of the fire is un? known. The country through Jghich it paBs?? is literally burned up. Bay after bay and swamp after swamp have been made bare of all undergrowth, and the trees afid timber completely destroyed. The savannahs, with the turpentine boxes, are made sterile wastes. The hot, dry weather rendered it impossible to check the onward marok of tke flames. It is yet burning, but will be likely to stop its carecer on the banks of tbe Waooamaw. We havo not learned the particulars concerning the losses occasioned by thus fire, but are satisfied that they ai e great. Major W. A. Clarady had fifteen thousand turpentine boxes burned, and John A. Wilson five thousand. The earth is left bare behind this fire, the cat? tle range destroyed for the season, the deer unsheltered, and the bears and rattlesnakes made to seek a new hiding place or destroy? ed by the fire. It is estimated that over ono hundred thousand acres of land was burned over. At night the heavens were brilliant from the lurid names, and the cloud? of smoke that arose by day were but portentous of the fiery storm beneath. We shall be glad to have full accounts of this terrible conflagra? tion._ THE CORONER MUDDLE.-The Aldermen who so ignorantly put their "foot into it" on Tues? day night, by electing a oolored man to the office of Coroner, when they had no more to do with it than the aforesaid oolored man bad to elect himself, were thrown into a state of cont union yesterday morning on being inform? ed of their error by the newspapers. As the case is attracting considerable attention, we give the act providing for the eleotiou of Coro? ner, ?ko., and also the ono repealing it. The first was adopted by the Legislature on the 17t ) of December, 1817. It is as follows: An act to appoint a Boord of Commissioners for the City of Charleston, with power and anthon tv to declare in what cases the streets, lanes and alleys of the oity shall be widened, and to provide for earrving in o execution the objects of said board, and tor other pur? poses therein mentioned. t?soTioN 10. That tho City Council of Charles? ton shall be, and they are hereby, authorised and empowered to ele3t annually a Coroner, for the Parishes of St. Philip and ht. COLLECTOR OF CUSTOMS.-A private telegram from Washington was received here yesterday afternoon announcing that Dr. A. G. Mackey has been reinstated as Collector of Customs. The statement is generally believed by the friends of Dr. Mackey, who assert that he was removed because of misrepresentations made to the President by his enemies, and that his reappointment is doe to the letter of Governor Scott to tho President, whioh placed affaira in their truo light-the Governor stating among other t binge that Dr. Mackey was the leader of the Bepublioan party in Charleston, and its prosperi ty was in a great measure due to him. UNITED STATES COURT, JULY 7-HON. GEORGE S. BRYAN, JUDOB, PRESIDING.-Tho following business was disposed ot to-day : In the District Court.-In the case of the United States vs. twenty barrels of distilled spirits, owned by W. H. Stark-information for violation of internal revenue laws-a motion for continuance was granted. In the case of the United States vs. Charles ?. Addison, et al, indicted for violating inter? nal revenue laws, a benoh warrant for the ar? rest of Addison was issued. In the ease of the United States vs. twenty barrels ot distilled spirits, the property of W. H. Stark, it was ordered that the plaintiff have time to amend the information, whioh should be filed within five days after the issuanoe of the order. In the case of the United States vs. David Roily, it was ordered that John C. Dutoht et al, should reoeive $260 more. In the Circuit Court.-In the oase of William Howland, et al, vs. Thaddeus Kelly-bill in equity-it was ordered that the complainants be allowed to make William Jervey a party de? fendant to the snit; also, that the complainant have leave to amend his bill on points of no general interest. ,_ THE PILLSHURY CAUCUS TICKET.-The result of the election of oity officers on Tuesday night excited considerable surprise, especially in view of the fact that some of the Aldermen who were supposed to be ardent adherents of the Mackey faction voted the Pillsbury caucus tioket straight through. This may be explained. The Mayor earn? estly desired the election of his stepson, Jos. H. Jenks, as City Inspector. To obtain this a number of promises in the shape of offices had to be thrown into the hungry maws of the Al? dermen who were opposed to his faction or ..uncertain." With this end in view, the Mayor and his two or three advisers set to work and promised the office of Coroner to J. P. Howard, son of Alderman Howard, colored; Clerkship of City Conrt to T. D. Small, colored, son of Alder mai Small; Portwardenship to J. 0. Holloway, colored, son of Alderman Hollo? way; City Attorneyship to D. T. Corbin, friend of Alderman Cunningham; Flour Inspectorship to M. Caulfield, friend of Alderman Greene; Assessorship to P. J.
