' LOST AND FOUND.-A pocketbook containing greenbacks, specie'and valuable papers was lost ou Tuesday and advertised in Tn NEWS of yesterday. It was found by A AspinaU, a colored mau, who at once looked in the column0 of Tn Nzws, saw the advertisement and im? mediately took the pocketbook to the owner. Tn BOARD or TRADE.-A meeting of the Hoard of Trade was held last evening, the President, Henry Cobia, Esq., in the chair. The following: gent?o .nen were unanimously elected members of the Board : Captain T. J. Lockwood, Henry Daly, L. T. Potter, and B. K. NeufvUle. The President read a letter from a committee ot citizens of Columbus, Ga., concerning a proposed railroad from Columbus to West Point, and, on motion, the foUowing was adopted ? Resolved, That the letter in relation to the railroad from Columbus, Ga., to West Point,, be referred to a special committee of fivo, with power to attend the meeting referred to and that the Secretary be requested to ascertain at onco when the said meeting will be held. Tho Presideut was requested to appoint the oonmittee at his leisure. The Board then adjourned. THE POUCE DEPABTSTEHT.-The offices in this depaitment are only four m number, and there are about fifty -spirants for each. I hose who bare interested themselves in tbe matter are about equally divided in opinion as to whether Major Willoughby or Captain Hen? dricks will be Chief. Lafayette I. Wolf and W. N. Taft are spoken of for First Lieutenants, and Offioer Philippy, if the Detective force, for Second Lieutenant. Holloway, son of the Alderman, who was elected a portwarden Tuesday night, is just oat of the Lunatic Asylum. The members ot the Mackey faction were yesterday load in their regrets that D. T. Co : bid did not receive more ot the city offices, but consoled themselves with the belief that there is still hone for him. The Pillsbury faction, it is understood, has gone back on Major Willoughby, and Captain Hendricks will be re-elected. Large groups of colored and white men col? lected about ihe City Hall yostar Jay and qnes: tioned one another about the correctness of the newspaper reporta of the election, frosting that they were incorrect, and consequently there was a possibility of their having been elected. Unfortunately for them, the reports were correct, and the aspirants were left die oonsolate. The bite were portions containing the initials of tbe owner, j and were evidently cat off and placed there by the thief for fear of detect i m. The bits are at the detective's office, and o an be obtained by proving property. The disappointed office-seeker, who on Toes day night stole from the Council Chamber an um brella belonging to a member of the press, is roques te i to return it to this office. It ia of cotton material, and was only purchased for nae at Council meetings and other stormy oc? casions._ A NEW THEATRE.-On Ties day sieht last the Freundachat ra bund held their regular monthly meeting, and, we learn, took final action in re? gard to the building of a new hall. As we learn, the reports of the committees in reference to the matter were heard, and it was then decided to parchase the lot at the southwest corner of Meeting and Georgs streets, on which tne society propose to build at an early day a large and handsome three story brick building, fifty by one hundred feet, fronting on Meeting-street. The first floor will be fitted up for the social asea of the mem? bers of tbe club. The eeoond story will be so arranged that theatrical and operatic perform? ances can be coodnoted in it. This hall will be larger than the Hibernian Hall, and will have a commodious stage, with all fixtures necessary for performers and for placing the pieces on the eta%e to tbe beet advantage. The lot will 03st $6500, and the building, when completed, probably $25,000. It is with the greatest pleasure we announce the above, and we sincerely trust that the boildiag will be oommenced at au early day. Something of the kind has been long needed, and it will be a source of gratification to all classes to know chat lhere is a fine prospect of the want being supplied very Boon. l'zitEIBLE COXTLAOSTION IK Ho EST COUNTY. We learn from the Sorry News that one of the most extensive fires ever known in that section has been raging for the last two weeks in All saints Parish. It broke oat near the upper end of Ocean ?sy, not far from tbe seashore, ?ni has reached the Wilson estate lands, on the Wacoamaw, six miles above Con way boro', ha vim? barned over a distance of nt arly twenty miles. The average breadth of tbe fire is un? known. The country through which it passed i? literally burned np. Bay after bay and swamp after awamp have boen made bure of all undergrowth, and the trees and timber completely destroyed. The savannahs, with tbe turpentine boxes, are made sterile wastes. Tbe hot, dry weather rendered it impossible to check the onward much of the flames, lt is yet burning, bat will be likely to stop its careeer on the banks of the Waccamaw. We have not learned the particulars concerning the losses occasioned by this Are, bat are satisfied that they aie great. Major W. A. Clarady had fifteen thousand turpentine boxes barned, and John A. Wilson five thousand. The earth is left bare behind this fire, the cat? tle raDge destroyed for the season, tbe deer unsheltered, and the bears and rattlesnakes made to seek a new hidiDg place or destroy? ed by the fire. It ia estimated that over one hundred thousand acres of land was burned over. At night the heavens were brilliant from the lurid flames, and the clouds of smoke that arose by day were but porten toas of the fiery storm beneath. The first was adopted by the Legislature on the 17c > of December, 1817. COLUMBIA ITEMS.-W. A. Harris, Esq., who, for fifteen years haa been a resident of Colom? bia, died on Tuesday of apoplexy. Mr. Wright has renewed his lease of the Nickers in House for another term, and it will be continued under its present able management. The stockholders of the Colnmbia and Au? gusta and Charlotte and South Carolina Bail road Companies were to have met in Columbia yesterday afternoon, to merge the two compa? nies in one._ I. O. O. S 8. ? COLLECTOR OF CUSTOMS.-A private telegram from Washington was received here yesterday afternoon announcing that Dr. A. G. Mackey ha? been reinstated EB Collector of Custom?. The statement is generally believed by the friends of Dr. Mackey, who assert that he was removed because of m ieie pres ea tat io DB made to the President by his enemies, and that his reappointment is due to the letter ot Governor Scott to the President, whicb placed affairs in their true light-the Governor stating among other tilings that Dr. Mackey was the leader of the Republican party in Charleston, and its prosperity was in a great measure due to hun. UNITED STATES COURT, JULT 7-HON. GEORGE S. BRYAN, JUDOS, PRESIDING.-The followmg business was disposed ot to-day : In the District Court.-Io the case of the United States vs. twenty barrels of distilled spirits, owned by W. H. Stark-information for violation of internal revenue laws-a motion for continuance aaa granted. In the case of the United States vs. Charles B. Addison, et al, indicted for violating inter? nal revenue Jaws, a bench warrant for the ar? rest of Addison was issued. In the case of the United States vs. twenty barrels ot distilled spirits, the property of W. H. Stark, it was ordered that the plaintiff have time to amend the information, whicb should be flied within five days after the issuance of the order. In the case of the United States vs. David Beily, it was ordered that John C. Dutch, et al, should receive $250 more. In the Circuit Court.-In the case of William Howland, et al, vs. Thaddeus Kelly-bill in equity-it was ordered that the complainants be allowed to make William Jervey a party de? fendant to the suit; als 3, that the complainant have leave to amend his bill on points of no general interest. THE PILLSBURY CAUCUS TICKET.-The result of the 'election of city officers on Tuesday night excited considerable surprise, especially in view of the fact that some of the Aldermen wbo were supposed to be ardent adherents of the Mackey faction voted the Pillsbury caucus ticket straight through. This may be explained. The Mayor earn? estly desired the election of bis stepson, Jos. H. Jenks, as City Inspector. To obtain this a number of promises in the shape of offices had to be thrown into the hungry maws of the Al? dermen who were opposed to bis faction or "uncertain." With this end in view, the Mayor and his two or three advisers set to work and promised the office of Coroner to J. P. Howard, sou of Alderman Howard, colored; Clerkship of City Court to T. D. Small, colored, son of Alderman Small; PortwardeuBhip to J. 0. Holloway, colored, eon of Alderman Hollo? way; City Attorneyehip to D. T. Corbin, friend of Alderman Cunningham; Flour Inspectorship to M. Caulfield, friend of Alderman Greene; Assessorsbip to P. J.
