Her place will be taken by the Empire, which, with the Pro? metheus, will run regularly between Charles? ton and Philadelphia. FLEE,-The alarm bf fire sounded about half past 9 o'clock on Saturday night last, was oc? casioned by. the burning of a bunk, and some bed-clothing on the steamer Belief lying at Ac? commodation wharf. The fire, supposed to be the work of an incendiary, was extinguished before much damage was done. HARPER'S MAGAZINE.-Tho July number con? tains an article on "Early jEronauts." Sold at Holmes' Book Hongo, INQUEST.-On Saturday morning' Coroner Whiting held aa inquest, at No. 8 Stoll's Alley, o ver the body of Cyrus Hoffman, the colored boy, who waa drowned off Fraser's wharf on Friday afternoon. The white boy who volun? teered the information that Cyrus was shoved into the water, yet could not give the name of the offender, nor tho names of the witnesses whom he asserted oould prove the charge, testified Saturday, telling the same story about the affair. The verdict of the jury was that the deceased came to hie death by drown? ing. ? A DESPERAT NEGRO.-Saturday night, about half-past 9 o'clock, the ?tore of Messrs. Bet buase'ft Berkemeyer, No. 879 King-street, was entered by three negroes, who deliberately walk? ed behind the counter and attempted to force open the money drawer with a knife. One of the Arm interfered and took the knife away, but was severely bitten on the arm by one of the negroes. Officers Lovett and Coates hap? pening to pass near by heard of the affair in time to get to the store and succeed io arrest? ing one of the negroes. A YACHT BACH AT LAST.-We are gratified to announce that the preliminaries for a yacht raoe have at length been definitely adjusted. Toe race will take plac on the 24th inst., and the yachts Eleanor, Ella Anna and Maggie Mitchell have r already been enter d. The entranee fee is one hundred dollars. We trust that several other entries will be made, and that we shall have as pleasant and as ox 6 ting a ontest as tubae which attracted so much attention last summer. LOVK-A COSMOPOLITAN-THEFT-PRETENDED WIFE-PISTOL PRAOTKIE - ELOPEMENT-MAR? RIAGE-IMPRISONMENT.-If reports be true and reports are sometimes most accurate there is a young man in this city who bas figured in several love affairs; endeavored to elope with a mulatto girl; baa been arrested several times for theft; has recently eloped and been married; claims to ba from almost every point laid down on the maps; once asserted that ho was a colored man, and, to crown all, is new in jail, where ho has boen before. The name of this individual is suppressed only OB account of the confiding woman whom he has recently entrapped into marriage, ano tbrougbont this account he will be styled F. Some months since F. was arrested and ar- . raigued before Justice Mackey on tho charge of stealing money. The prosecutor being a resident of New Orleans, and unable to await "law's delay," the prosecution was dropped. Not long after, according to report. F. court? ed a mulatto girl, representing himself as a colored man-his dark skin supporting his as? sertion. He attempted to elope with her, but didn't succeed. After this F. was arrested for stealing money from the trunk of a woman with whom he was on intimate terms. On this charge he was committed to jail by Justice Mackey. There he remained for a few days, when the woman came to tbe Justice and represented herself as the wife of F. The Justioe, of courso, released him, on the ground that a man could not steal from his wife. This affair over, F. turned his thoughts upon marriage, determining to "settle down." He met a lady, wooed and won her. Her relatives hearing stories detrimental to his oharaeter, instituted inquiries, and were told that if they oalled at Magistrate Mackey's office at a cer? tain time they would be fully informed ot the charoo : er of tho man in question. They did not go to the appointed place, but sent for Offi? cer Reed, who went to the house and told all he knew about tbe man. The lady, woman like, would not believe the man of her choice to be anything else than what her fancy pain t ed bim, and a few day's after Offioar Reid's vb i she eloped with F.. and married him. F. heard that i he brother of bis wife had made inqui? ries regarding his character, and sailed upon him Friday afternoon and threatened to mur? der him. The brother fired two shots at F., who burr edly departed, unhurt. Mr. Patrick Bligh, residing at No. 681 King street, last week lost a watch,and having reason to s aspect F., had him arrest ;d. Officers Phil* ippy,Beed and Coates worked up the case, and o a Saturday F. appeared before Justice Maokey to answer the charge. He was arrested while baking preparations to leave for New York. The justice offered to release F. if he would gire bonds in the sum of 1500 to appear to answer the charge on Tuesday next. He said be could get the security; but after waiting four hours failed to furnish it, and was commit? ted tu jail. t F. bas hailed from various points in New York, North and South Carolina, and Louisiana, Many persons think he is an Italian. Whatever he is, the novelists are indebted to Him for laying the groundwork for a first class dune novel. j -. THE STATE COURT, JOXT 3-HOM. B, B. CARPENTER PRESIDING.-Tho arguments in the case of J. Evans Elding j vs. John Wright, (the latter having purchased at a sale by the Master in Equity a tract of land on Ediato Isl? and belonging to the former, but when u? at? tempted to take possession, a dispute arose as to the limits of the property purchased, and he was prosecuted for trespass,) were heard in inls court Saturday. The jury awarded ten dollars damages to the plaintiff. : The oase of John Biuns vs. the Western Union Telegraph Comp my was heard on Sat. ur Jay, an the jury awarded to the plaintiff one hunched dollars damages, It appears that some months since a tele? gram was sent from New York to Mr. Binns, over the lines of the Western Union Company, informing him of the state of the cotton mar? ket in that oity. Tbe telegram arrived lute Saturd iy afternoon, and the messenger started with it to Mr. Binna' house. He mistook the place and gave it to another person. The mis? take was not discovered until Tuesday morn? ing, and tho telegram was then properly de? livered. Mr. B. claimed that he was subjected to loss by not receiving the telegram in tima, and brought suit against the oompany for about $7000 damages. There was testimony introduced by the company, Saturday, showing that the information contained in the telegram to Mr. B. was received by several mer oban ts at half-past three o'clock Saturday, and was gen? erally known before dark. He courteously but firmly refused to furnish the names, saying: "Some of the applicants might not like for the public to know that they have applied. Their names will not be read before Gounod on Tuesday night. We have held a caucus, and selected the men that we want, and in Council I shall mention the offloe co be filled, and eal! for nominations. Besides, if these names are published it will make the public laugh-some of them make me laugh." Wo learn that the committee will commence at an early day to make the arrangements for the reading-room, library, &o. The building is admirably adapted for the purpoae, and when fitted up as it ia intended to be, will meet a want long felt, and will also be an ornament to the city. . CBUMBB.-The Pillsburyites bold a caucus Friday night until nearly ono o'clock, and ar? ranged matters for tho election to-morrow night. The action of the Mayor in imprisoning the two colored girls for insulting Kiley by loudly amping "Democrat Riley," elicited from Cain a column of editorial protest iu the last Mis? sionary Record. The bathing of boys off Boyce's wharf, from which most of the yachting parties leave, should be stopped at once. The onslaught of the police upon the dogs will commence cn Tuesday. THE FLORIDA (STEAM LINE-THE DICTATOR AND Cm POINT.-This well managed line of steamers, which have for several seasons past, ran with so much promptitude and comfort to the travelling public, from this city to Fernan? dina, Jacksonville and Palatka, touching at Savannah, consisting Ot the steamers Dictator, Captain W. T. MoNelty, and City Point, Cap? tain G. B. McMillan, are making great prepar? ations to give increased facilities and accom? modations to their numerous patrons daring the approaching business Benson. The Dictator has been for several weeks in the hands of the mechanics, and nothing that cm add to her speed, safety and elegance has been spared, and she will continue in command of that relia? ble and high-toned officer, Captain MoNelty, assisted by an able corps of assistants, the engineer department being in charge of that Bkilful machinist, Mr. A. W. Lockhart. This steamer will take her place on the line by leaving Charleston on Tuesday evening next. The City Point, Captain McMillan, has been withdrawn and will be in the bands of the me? chanics for a short time, and will be placed in first rate condition. These steamers form one of the most successful steam lines on the coast, and as they are managed by Captain L. M. Coxetter, who is in all respects a first class office, the travelling public may positively expeot the boats to b? kept up to the first-claes standard. The agents in this city are Messrs. J. D. Aiken & Co., who will be pleased to give information in reference to the line. BANKRUPT CASES.-The following matters in bankruptcy were entered on tho books of the United States District Court Saturday : In the case of Peter Dibble vs. A. Antills, a petition to sell perishable property, the peti? tion was granted. In the caso of C. B. Groover vs. Wm. Koots, petition for examination, it was ordered that an examination ba held, before Registrar Car? penter on the 9th of this month. In the case of Fred. J. Smith vs. Fogarties dc Stillman, a petition for sale of real estate, it was ordered that it be sold on the first Tuesday in August. In the case of Fred. J. Smith va. Geo. Hoff, man, the report of the sale of property by the assignee was confirmed. In the oase of John Harvey, a petition for a discharge, the petition was referred to Regis? trar Carpenter, and a hearing ordered before the court on the 281 of July. Ia the oase of D. L. Turner vs. Moses P. Walker, the assignee was Ordered to publish a notice calling upon all hen creditors to prove their liens before Registrar C. J.
