THE CELEBRATION" OF TBE GERMAN RIFLE CLUB AT THE 80H?ETZENPLATZ YESTRB BAT. 1 The Rcgulatlom-Prise?-Shootlnx-Dla trlbat ion of Prises-Dancing, die? There waa a merry gathering at the Schuet zeoplaU yesterday, participating in the cele bration of the Qermao Bifle Club, wiiioh had ?rotten it np for the parp?se of contending for the twenty prizes left over from the grand Sehuetzenfest in May last. There was not as larsre a gathering nor were the exercise* on as grand-'a scale on this occasion, but we doubt if at the former there were more genuine en? joyment and better shooting than was had yesterday. THE DAT was bright and the sun intensely hot, bat neath the shade at the Schentzenplatz, the heat was cot felt, and the breeze from the rivi cooled the air and made every one rejoice thai they were ont of the hot city to where it WM delightfully pleasant and where they could bid dull care begone, and enjoy themselves with that freedom and zest which marks an era in one's life. THE CROWD. There were between five and six lundred parsons present, a large proportion of whom ware of the gentler sex. The arrangements for transportation, by cars and Omnibusses, afforded a pleasant ride to the ground'!. As soon as Ihe people arrived they dispersed either to the dancing hall, shooting gallery, or other pointe where amusements were going on. As THE 8HOOTLNO GALLES? Waa the principal object ot attraction, after the ladies, of coarse, we will first visit there. It was situated OD the same spot as in May last, and the same admirable arrangements regarding targets, firing, Ac, were to be noticed-every? thing to prevent danger and everything to fa? cilitate (hose contending for the prizes. Con* spicuou8ly poste 1 about the gallery were the folio wing *. REGULATIONS. 1. The shooting will be entirely under the control of the shooting master. 2. Only active members in uniform will be allowed to shoot. 8. Every active member will be permitted to shoot throe times at the Bing target without farther payment; but at every other target will be charged tea oents. 4. Targets A and B are for bull's-eye shoot? ing; target C for ring firing. 5. All shooting must be done standing up. 6. Nobody will be permitted to go down to the targets. 7. Shooting will commence at nine and atop at four o'clock. 8. AUTillea for shooting aro as they aro laid down in the constitution. PHIZES. The prizes to be shot for were twenty in number. For active members shooting at the bull'a-eye target (the one hitting it the moat times getting the first prize, the second best the second prize, and so on,) there were : One silver-plated cordial stand, one pair calf-akin booti, one yearfe "free shaving-, one embroid? ered infant robe, one pair congress gaiters, one dozen condensed milk, one pair velvet suppers, one pair embroidered suspenders. At the Bing target for active members-each ring into wbioh the target ia divided being valued according to ita nearness to the centre, and the marksman marting the highest re? ceiving the first prize, and so on-the prizes were* One pair patent leather boots, one Eng? lish walking coat, one white silk vest, ooe silver mounted whip, one pair black pants, one la? dies'dressing case, one pair kid slippers. The prizes for the passive members were : One ladies' bonnet, one gold mounted riding whip, one croquet game, one white Alpine bat, one box Cohen's medicines. THE SHOOTING commenced at nine o'clock, under the direc? tion of the shooting master, Captain r. Speng? ler, President of the Washington (D. C.) Club, but also a member of th? German Rifle Club, and by it elected shooting manier for the next year. From the commencement until four o'clock the oracJaog of rifles, was craite lively reminding the bid campaigners of more trou? ble os times. The targets, one hundred and twonty-a ve yards distant, were seldom missed, and the close shots were so numerous that it were a useless task to attempt to count them. The active members generally used the rifles mane by Mr. J. H. Happoldt, gunsmith, on Meeting-street, and with them the Orange powder, or which Messrs. O. W.Williams A Co. aro agents, both being pronounced excel? lent. The same description of rifles were in use with the passive members, who, however, used Hazzard's rifle powder. About half-past throe o'clock the majority of thoo? conten din jr for prizes ceased firing, and the in tercet centred upon the passive mem? bers, who,, believing that they had one more prize than they were entitled to, offered to se? iest one of their number to contend for it with any one selected by the active member^. Tbe ofter was accepted, and Mr. J. H. Happoldt waa selected by the passive, and Mr. J. C. H. Clausa ea by the active CK m be rs. The contest, which was close, resulted in Mr. Happoldt win ni og the prize. DABCXBO and other amusements were sot allowed to flag while the shooting was going on. At ten o'clock the ladies and their partners assembled in the Tapper room of the large building there devoted to amusements, and with, twinkling feet kept time to the lively strains of the band. Those who were disinclined to dance had other amusements, such as billiards, ten-pins, and the like to engage their attention, and thus all mada the boors go swiftly and Joyously by oneil five o'clock, when it was announced that the time had arrived for the LISTEXBUTION OF PHIZES to those who bad bees successful in the shooting contest. The prizes were brought to a stand in the oentre of tho green. On and around it the male portion of the audience assembled, while the ladies looked on from the balcony above. Captain F. Melcher* was selected to deliver th? prizes to the passive members, and dti so, after stating the plea? sure it was to him to deliver the prizes so handsomely woo. The recipients arc as named : Fust priz?, a ladies' bonnet, to J. H. Hap? poldt Second prizo, *> gold mounted riding whip, to B. S. Bruns. Thiid prize, a croquet game, complete, lo John A. Michel. Fourth prize, a fine Alpine hat, to W. H. Burn. Fifth prize, one box of Cohen's medicine, to J. H. Happoldt. Mr. B. 8. Bruns, who had bees selected to deliver the prizes tn the active members, now took tho stand and made some pleasant re? marks regardiug the celebration of the day, and of ail the celebrations by the Germans, which he truly asserted were so well calcular ed to produce good feeling and gooi fellow? ship, not only among themselves, bat among all nationalities, the representatives of which always delighted to attend their gatherings. He then delivered the prizes as follows, Baying something humorous concerning each prize: First prize, a silver-plated cordial stand, to F. Torck, who made twenty-eight ceutre shots. Second prize, a pair of calf-skin boots, to H. Bensen; twenty-five centre shots. Third prize, one year's free shaving at Lom bardo'a saloon on Market-street, to T. Speng 1er; eighteen centre shots. Fourth prize, an infant's embroidered robe, to J. 0. H. Ol UBSPD; eleven centre shots. Fifth prize, a pair of congress gaiters, to John Wohlimaun; nine centre shots. Sixth prize, a dozen cana condensed milk, to S. Charles Seel; four centre shots. Seventh prize, a pair of vtlvet slippers, to John Schalla; three centre shots. Eighth prize, a pair of embroidered suspen? d?is; 'o John Knobeloch; three centre shots. For the Bing Tai get-First prize, a pair of patent leather boots, to J. C. H. Glaasseu, whose three shots marked forty. Second prize, an English walking coat, to H. Bensen, who marked thirty-eight. Thitd prize, a while silk vest, to S. Charles Seel, who marked thirty-five. Fourth prize, a silver-mounted whip, to Johns Ostendoiff, who marked thirty-three. Fifth prize, a pair of black pants, to C. Men? sing, who marked thirty-three. Sixth prize, a lady's dressing-case, to'T. Spengler, who marled thirty-three. Sevanth prize, a pair of kid slippers, to F. TheeB, who marked thirty-three. CONCLUSION. At the conclusion of the distribution the semblage resumed their various amusements, which were continued until a late hour las night; eaoh and every one dispersing to dream over the joya of this and to wish for another Schoulzenfest immediately. The day was marked throughout by the mos* decorum, nhich by the way, is always noticeable at all festivals given by our G rm au citizens, who are most indefatigable when work, and no less so when they devote their time to pleasure; they go about it witb a zest that is a stranger to almost every otber peopl yet there is a quiet enjoyment, and such a coi dial spirit thal make all at home who attend their festivals. May there be hundreds more of them, and all who were present yesterday live to enjoy them and many more, is our stn care wish. THE CHARLESTON BOARD OF TRADE.-A spec? ial meeting of the Charleston Board el Trade was held last evening, the President, H Cobla Esq., in the chair. Applications for membership were received from the following gentlemen : F. E. Fraser W. B. Smith, Henry Gourdin, J. R. Pringle W.P.Hall, H.T. Peake, A. Cameron, B. Barkley, O F. Panknin, J. T. Humphreys A. Falk, D. Haas, William Sheppard, N. Hunt N. A. Hunt, James Adan, Robert White, Yon San ten, Andrew J. Brown, B. R. Riordan John Campeen, J. A. Qaackenbusb, Genera] J. W. Harrison, J. C. H. Cla?asen, William Laidler, E. Horry Frost; E. N. Thurston, F. Fanning, T. A. Jeffords, Q. A. Damon. On' motton, the roles were suspended and the applicants were elected by acclamation. The chairman congratulated the Board on the accession of new members, and said that there was ether agreeable business to come before the meering. Hr. E. W. Marshall arose, and said that he was one of the members of the receotly ap? pointed committee which had solicited sab script ions tor the reading-room of the Charles? ton Board of Trade. The committee had been met in nearly every instance with cordiality and kindness, and the work might now be regarded as an accom pushed success. It was proper, however, to say that the maia credit of the whole under? taking was due to D. F. fleming, Esq., who had labored in the cause with a zeal and ener? gy, only equalled by his modesty as a man and merit os a merchant [Applause.] The Bum subscribed was large, and would be increased to an amount amply sufficient for the purpose proposed. Ia conclusion, he read the following heading of the subscription list, which ex? plains the object of raising the mosey: Feeling the great want that bas long existed in the City of Charleston tor a reading room accessible to Etrangers visiting the city, aa advantageous to the. mercantile community generally, we, the undersigned, hereby agree to give, as a donation to- the Charleston Board of Trade, the sums opposite our respective names for the purchase of a building to enable them to carry out the above object. Hr. Marshall then submitted the following Which waa unanimously adopted : Resolved, That a special committee be ap pointed by the chair, to consist of the presi? dent, vice-president and five other membirs of the board, whose doty it shall be to carry out the object stated in the above preamble, and that this committee be constituted a Board of Trustees to act uotil the next annual meeting of this board, and that the president of this board bo authorized to execute all necessary p?pers in connection therewith. The following are the committee : President H. Cobie, Tice-President A. H. Hayden, Messrs D. F. Fleming, E. W. Marsball, W. K. Byan H. Bisohoff and B. 8. Bruns. ? On morion, the meeting thea adjourned. CROTCHS.-There are no new developments in the Council ring. T. J. Mackey bas return? ed to the fold and the faithful are still waiting The residents of the neck Buffer serious inconvenience-atom the distance of the ice houses and the scarcity of reliable servants. A few branch ice booses in the northeastern sec? tion of the city, would prove a paying invest? ment. There was nothing startling or strange on tbe police record 'yesterday. Two aspiring colored men took advantage of the heat to go ou a royal benzine burst, but sere locked up in the cool. Improvements are still progressing at the State Courthouse. The interior presents a pleasing appearance, and the entire building is now an ornament to the city. Notwithstanding the extreme beat of the weather there was a warm debate in Judge Carpenter's Court yesterday, and the vot?es of the legal disputants could be heard above the din of passing vehifjes, and far beyond the sawdust limit. Major John B. Dennis is spoken of as tho deputy collector under Mr. Clark. The anti Clark party, however, assert that his appoint ment is not conect, and ihat he will never be the collector. The honor of having induced the change ia variously attributed to C. C. Bowen, Senator Sawyer, and the indefatigable Tim. Hurley. On Monday night, thc house Of Mr. T. H. Thayer, in Tradd-slroot, wa3 entered by some ono unknown, and roboed of wearing apparel and other articles of value. Rumor strongly asserts that a prominent leader in the third house of be South Carolina Legislature was instrumental m the chaDge of collectors. He has recently returned from Washington, and, it is said, brought Mr. Clark's commission in his carpet bag. It was red hot in the soo yesterday, bat the comparative desertion of the streets was at? tributed to the full attendance at tbe Sehuet? zenfest. The Emmett Circle (F. B.) will meet ai fae Hibernian Hall to-nicht. The First National Bank will be closed on tbe fifth of Joly; all papers duo mast be an? ticipated. HAPPOLDT'S RIFLES.-The majority of tho ri? fles used at the Schnetzenfest yesterday were made by our townsman, Mr. J. H. Happoldt, and it is pleasing' in the highest degree that weapons so handsome externally, and BO per? fect for thu parp?se for which they are intend? ed, should have been provided in our city by a Charleston artificer. Slr. H. enjoys a high reputation as a gunsmith, and the good work done yesterday by his rifles cannot tail to in? crease bis well-deserTed popularity. Hom, ABBXTALS JUBB 89.-Ohariesion Botel. F. G.
