The Jalj Bamber of this msgssiae con? tains the oon tia nation of "Shoulder to Shoulder," by Personne, and another chap? ter from the history of the "Blockade Runners of the Confederacy." These arti? cles ere bright and lively, and if they hare a fault, it ia that they ere too abort, The article on "Duelling" ia not fresh, sod "A Leaf from an Old Lawyer's Portfolio" is some what stupid; bat the translation from the " Hitopadesa ef Vishnu Sarmin" will be found interesting, in spite nf ita unoouth title, i About "The Talmud," the populace, we fear, care bat little, and if *. Agleae" is the poetry of the Nineteenth Century we hsd bettor retara to the Eighteenth, or advance to the Twentieth, with os little delay as possible. The departments of Agriculture and Science, the Passes at Books, and the Pishes and Spoons, are a great improvement on the June number. And it is refreshing when the editor of the me ga tine assumes that the most threadbare quotation in that threadbare poem Lucille, is "new to'most of his readers !" This ie a barbarous country, doubtless, bat Lucille has been read even in thia Boothera clime. .The Nineteenth Century is a Southern pablieatioa, and we hope that it will pros? per. So far, it has contained much of good and muoh of bad, and the editors will not, we trust, think us improperly harsh when we say that they need more assistance and more streogth to make their rentare fully worthy of the support of the public It has hod a good start, ?ad if ear friends will only realize practically that a Southern magasine, to he successful, must be at least equal ia ability to i te Northern competitors, they may gradually secure for the Nine? teenth Century a position that will be fall of honor and profit. ttewiewa. THE Vin.A OV THE REINE. Br Berthold Auer? bach. Author's Edition. Nsw York : Ley po.de & Holt. Charleston : John Bussell. By weaving his theories ou tho subject of ?ducation, mental culture, social inter? course, the relations of labor and oapital. and other great questions of the day, into (he form of a novel, Auerbach may secure thousands of readers who would be repelled by the mere title of a philosophical trea? tise. In considering, therefore, the merits of "The Villa on the Rhine," it is proper to separate the speculative warp from the woof of incident and character. To sn American, however, the aimless vaticina nation whioh absorb this Teutonic mind, are more or less wearisome; and although the work before as is the masterpiece of tbe writer, it is cot likely to attraot for long public attention on this side of the A'lactic. There are in it many gems of thought, macy passages of beauty; bat there is nothing practical or real, nothing which will have a lasting effect upon any olass of people. The plot is in some respects highly im? probable, and the good people of the story are ao continually on dress parade that the reader is attracted by the bold criminality of Sonnenkamp and the Countess Bella rather than by the smug- fae ed comeliness of Frau Dournay, Erich, Roland and Manna. And, ss fax ss Stutherners are concerned, there is the one insuperable objection, ti ai the third and fourth parts are rich in' adu? lation of John Brown, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Parker and the inevitable negro, coupled with gross misrepresentation of our manners, customs and character. Au? erbach is as blind a negro worshipper as Garrison, Greeley or Sumner. Oa page 911 we read "The negro Adams entered the "room. Roland and Manna stood aghast. "Roland rushed to the negro, embraced him, "crying, wild with excitement, 'let your " 'whole race, all your brothers, be reoon " 'oiled by this. Come, Manna, give him ??your hand, embrace him.'" Manna is the sister of Roland, and Adams was their father's slave. Sven the embrace is not enough; for "Along the path" (page 918) "came AdamB, and on his right and to his "left, leaning on hi* arms, walked Ro? oland and Manna," who is spoken of (page 14) as "a girl who lived quietly in "her own thoughts and in pious reflec? tions." This last exploit causea the sud? den death of the mother of Roland and Manna. A little later the. E. G. G. are taken in hand, and we are informed (page 947) that "by means of their signs and 'passwords, they constituted a Bort of se 'eret oourt, and oommitted countless assas? sinations and secret executions," which is news to most of us. Of the murder of Lin? coln,..Auerbach says: "This deed stands 'forth ns an evidence of the barbarity that "the believers in aristocracy, the defend? ers of privileged classes, the deniers of "human rights, are oapable of. Ia future "days suoh villany will seem incredible; "now it stands forth plain and distinct-an "attaeeination, and not assassination by one "man. A whole band had conspired. Du? bing the war they slipped the leash of fa "natioism in the Southern States, and now "it is caged under a bloody e eal. " Already enough. Auerbach may be ignorant of the truth; bat if so advanaed a liberal and so able a man knows so little of slavery and the South, what wonder is it that the Ger? man masses should be deeply prejudiced against pur people ! As we have said, to a Southerner "The "Villa oa the Rhine" will be in many respecte disgusting; but there is ia it, nevertheless, so mao h simplicity end parity, se much in? sight and oatsight, so much strength and beauty, and so charming a pistare of Ger? man life-at court, in the city ?nd in the village-that it may still besoms popular and be generally read, if only because it is the fashion. We regret sincerely that a book whioh began so well should end so badly, and hope that Auerbaoh, in his future works, will be less long and.more C?iJ?tlnfx&^ip fiotirt.
