We very much doubt if there is & man, woman or child in the United States, where a circus has been, that has not heard of Herr Langel, the lion tamer-all of whom will read with interest tho statements below, gleaued from a conversation held with him yesterday afternoon, at the Pavilion Hotel, where be Lays nursing a leg badly bitten by a lioness in April last. HIS CIRCUS EXPEDIENCE, We found air. Lengel lying d J wn reading, not suffering mach, but very restless. He is apparently about thirty-two or thirty-three years of ace, but ia really ten years older. He told us that be is a native of Philadelphia, and has been engaged in the lion taming business for eighteen years, during which time be has served iu tbe cifcasses of J. M. Jane, S. B. Howe, Phineas r. Barnum, Height & Cham? bers, Yan Amburgh, Raymond & Co., Ca s tol? lo and Amos, the latter of wbiobhe is with at present. Jone is dead, Howe and Barnum have quit (be business, Haight & Chambers tailed in Texas, two years ago. Haigh t and Caa tel lo are now 'Chowing* in California. HU EXPERIENCE WITH LIONS. lu ana iver to a question as to his manner of taming lions, be replied at length, saying that "it wan a gift of nature" with him. I have no fear of them. People tell me every time 1 get a wound that "lt ought to bc a warninsr to mo, and should make mo' fear to go io the caso again. But il does not. Whoa I am away from the lions I get homesick, and when I can go where they are and my wound* prevent me from going into the cage, I get more homesick still. I never met auy lions [ could not tame. Three years ago, I tamed five in New York, which, while in Europe had killed one man and badly mangled another, who attempted to tame them, lu three weeks after they were put in my charge, they were as tame as I wished though before they were considered untamable Hvery seldom use force in taming them, but sometimes it becomes necessary kindness is my usual plan ; I am always care? ful to keep my eye upon them. In speaking of this, he said: If I did not keep my eye upon them they would jump at me. They have sense enough to know that I am retreating from them, and they gain courage; there is more danger to me at thia time than at any other. If the lions were at liberty, I would fear to go near them, gone people think that a lion born in America is more docile, partaking less of the savage' na? ture of the brute, than one boru io Africa or Asia. Not so. I Would rather have to tame a litter born in either of the last two mentioned places than a litter born in this country-the Utter are more dangerous and leas easily tamed. nrs WOUNDS. Mr. Lengel has been bitten a number of times by UonB, lionesses wo should have said, as the males have .never done so; the lionesses, said he, "are more treacherous and deceitful than the lions." He has been slightly scratch? ed an almosV innumerable number of times. He has never had to lay np but twice from his wounds. The description of tbe wounds and the places where be received them are men? tioned below. The first wound was a bite in the left leg, in ' Western Pennsylvania, while with Barnum's Circus. The second was received while with S. B. Howe ft Co. in Augusta, Ga., being severely bitten tn tbe left band. This wound caused him to Jose the use of bis middle finger. The third wasjoflicted at Little Bock, Ark., by a lioness in Howe & Costello's Cirons. This time two fingers ot the right hand were mangled. He ha? full nae of them now. ? The fourth was received while in Midis on, Indiana, last summer. The lioness seised him by the right leg, driving her teeth into tbe calf of his leg until they nearly met. The fifth waa received last April in New Orleans. The animal seized him by the left leg, inserting one tooth of the lower Jaw au inch and a half into the calf, and a tooth of the upper jaw the name depth into the upper side of the knee joint. Mr. Leng le waa confined to bia bed a while, but when the circus moved he came along, and gave two exhibitions, one in Augusta and one in Savannah, tbe latter of which he saya ia a paradise for a circus. On coming here he made arrangements, toper? ,form last Wednesday, but his leg pain log him, he consulted Dr. F. M. Robertson, who ordered him to bed at ones, telling him that the bme of the leg was injured. This order waa obeyed, and Mr. L. still remains in bed. Heia able, however, to travel about the room occasionally. It ia bomewhat of a coincidence that Dr. Robertson has attended his patient on two other occasions at the Pavilion Hotel for wounds received from lionesses-ill of the wounds being upon the left aide of the body. Herr Lengel does not think he was bitten but once intentionally. He atys the lionesses when together never meet, but they snarl and snap at each other-two of them never live peacefully in the same cage-and states that it ia bia opinion that with the exception men? tioned, when he aggravated one beyond endur? ance, he was bi the way, and waa bitten for one of the fi ones* ea es. He has the teeth and ola wa of the lioness which he thinks bit him pur poe ely. The teeth are an inch and a half long, with a root about two and a half Inches bi length. If the teeth were driven in flesh np to the gums, a large sized peach stone could be planted in the hole. The claws, which the ani? mal, hie the oat, keeps unexposed till wanted, are formidable looking objects. We do not now doubt, as we once did tbo assertions of travellers, that one blow from a hon's paw wonld kill a mao or tear out gra?t masses of flesh. Herr Leu gel says he fears tbeir claws moro than their teeth-that they generally strike before they bite. Herr Lengel will have to remain here about len days longer, after which it is probable bo will be able to rejoin his company. THE GEOBOIA RICE CHOP.-The Savannah Republican of Saturday, the 26th instant, e?tes "thal on the Savannah, Ogeechee, Alta mab and Satilla rivera, the rice crops are in a flourishing condition, and unless some unfore? seen diaaeUvf occurs, the yield will exceed that of any season since the year 1880. This news is very gratiiyiasr, inasmuch aa large crops of oom. and' lion1 are quite as essential to the prosperity of the South as good crops of cot? ton."_ . BUEOLAET. -Early yesterday morning the re? sidence of Mr. Morse, in the lower part of Church-street, waa entered by some negroes and robbed of a gold watch. Mrs. Morse was aroused about five o'clock by a noise in the piazza. '0h4 looked in trrat direction, but saw nothing. Happening to turn around, abe ob? served a negro man standing behind the bed. She screamed out, and the negro ran off, tak? ing with bim Mr. Morse's gold watch, which hung over the mantelpiece. Mr. Morse waa absent from home at the time. TEE SAVANNAH QCAHAXTLSK.-The Savannal News of Friday mentions that "the steaming M. Bramhall went down to Tybee yesterda; morning at seven o'clock, carrying the Norwe gian Consul, Mr. Holst, and Dr. Duncan, Act ing Port Physician, as also a fresh supply o provisions and water. She returned to the cit; at seven o'clock. Dr. Duncan reports the sic! doing well; no new cases, and tbe disease evi dently checked. We are obliged to tho Docto for the Dames of the captain and those " ' th crew who have died. Captain W. Olsen Van) died on the 17th June; Frederick Sladt, agei twenty-one years, seaman, from Norway, diet 17th; Andrew St rube, aged twenty-one years cook, from Aarb uno, Denmark, died June 19tb Charles Dassen, seaman, aged twenty-fou years, from Altona, Prussia, died June 24th. The Advertiser, of Saturday, states that "th schooner Sophia, Captain Cruice, from Nassau with a Oirgo of fruit, arrived at the quarantine ground, opposite Fort Jackson, yesterday morn ing. ..Afterbeing boarded by the health office she came op to tbe city and immediately com menced the discharge of ber cargo. The sonni fruits were landed on the wharf, and tb specked portion of the cargo placed upon thi deck of the vessel. Upon information beioj carried to the Mayor, orders were at onoe is sued by him to allow no one to go on board a to oome on share from her, and that she re t un forthwith to quarantine ground. This aotioi of his Honor is very just and proper under tai cir cums tances, DO t that there waa any siokneai on board, as the health officer thoroughly per formed his servioes, finding a clean bill o health, and all hands on board in a health: condition, before he allowed her to oome up tc the city, but it is right and proper that all ves sels arriving here from ports designated by th? health officer, in his notico to captains anc pilots of vessels, should be compelled to un? dergo a thorough disinfection of their holds before beiug towed up to the oity." THE MONITOB SAUQUS, whose arrival in our waters on Thursday last was mentioned in Tm NEWS, left for Florida yesterday, where she will be stationed for tbe present-that is, we have every reason to believe, until occuis i favorable opportunity to slip over into Cubar waters. Since her arrival she has been visited by a large number of our citizens, wbo found mool to amuse and instruct-every attention being shown and all information requested being giver by the offioers ol the veaaeL She baa in hei turret, which is perfectly impenetrable to al missiles now in use, tw j fifteen inch guns. The ports are so arranged that during an en? gagement it is almoit impossible for a bullet, sh ell or fragment tot enter. Around the Turret there are little lookout holes for the offioers. Tu the upper part of the turret is the pilot house, in which the helmsman can manouvre the vessel in perfect. safety. In pleasant wea? ther the offioers and crew oan remain on the deck, hut when it is stormy every one has to be below; the openings on dook are battened down and made perfectly water-tight, as the water is generally a foot or two deep OD it. Any one would suppose that the crew would suffer for air, but not so; the vessel is provided with a steam apparatus which circulates the air fre9ly about it, in ta?t, sends it about with such force as to blow hats off and books and papers about with the same force and freedom as an ordinary gale on laud. lu the engine room it is intensely hot, tho thermometer standing generally at one hundred and sixty degrees. The Saugus was attached to the blockading fleet in James River daring the late war, and participated in the naval attacks made by Commodore Porter on Fort Fisher. She was struck several times, marks of whioh are yet to be seen. On tbe lower portion of the turret a large solid shot struck fair, and tbe indenta? tion in the deepest part is about seven-eighths of an inch. Another shot shattered an iron bolt on the opposite side. In the upper por? tion a shot made a slight impression just under the lookout place of the pilot. One shot strik? ing upon the deck shattered two of the plates, which were replaced. Wherever the shots did not strike fairly-and only about three in five hundred will squarely strike a monitor shaped like this-there is only a mark such as coule apparently have been made by rubbing a brick against the iron. There will bo throe different targets, two for the active and one for tbe passive members. To thoij who attended-the hst 8chuetzen* fest, it is useless to say anything iu praise o? this or lo advise them to attend ir, for we will warrant that every ono will be present on Wed? nesday; but to those who were so unfortnnate 09 to be absent from the last one we would earnestly urge them to attend, for we feel as? sured that there will be the utmost enjoyment, excellent shooting, plenty of refreshments, and everything else that will contribute tohumiu happiness._ !>.?> THE FIEE SATURDAY MORNING-Two PEE SONS INJURED.-About nine o'clock, on Satur? day morning last, the turpentine still of] Messrs. M. Goldsmith & Co., located at the Railroad Accommodation wharf, was accident? ally fired, and consumed. The rosin ran into a strainer which immedi? ately took fire. The fire spread rapidly to two other stills, and in a short time the whole pro? perty, despite the strenuous exertions of the firemen, who were promptly on the- ground, was destroyed, lt .was valued at about $4000, on whioh there was about $2100 insurance. The heat from the flames, feeding os they were upon the most combustible of materials, was intense and prevented those working to extinguish them or to save property, from approaching very close. A colored man, named William B?se, who hal been working to save the property, was overpowered by the heat and fell senseless to the ground. It was with great -difficulty that he was removed out uf reaob of the flames. Mr. J. Goldsmith whilo at work also was struck by apiece of falling timber, and fell uncons?ous, in which state he lay for two or three minutes. On recovering he went to work again and commenced rolling barrels of ter? pentine from the flames. While thus engaged one barrel exploded, and the fire was immedi etely communicated to its contents. The clothes of Mr. G. took Are. He rushed up to a captain of an engine and begged him to turn the water on him and put bim out. Before the captain could comply with tho request, Mr. G. found that the fire was gotting too hot for him to wait, and he jumped overboard, landing up to his waist io med and water. This method had the desired effect. The fire was extin? guished, and he was soon rescued from his berth, veiy wet, but very little injured by the fire. The alarm of fire was not sounded by the bells until some minutes after the fire com? menced, and after the dense smoko from it was observed by persons in nearly all portions of the city.
