D. G. Erckmann, Ernest Beyer and ti. Randers a German paper, to be issued semi-weekly, and called the " SuoJIic her Correspondent. " It mil nit be a party paper, bnt will represent the interests of the Germans and the commer? cial and industrial interesta of the South. ASSAULT OK DETEOTTVE REED.-Yesterday four tars belonging to the monitor Sangus, re? cent ly arrived in our haroor, rowed one of her offioers up to the dock, and soon after deserted. The Captain of the monitor applied to the detective omeo to have them captured. Offi? cers Reed and Coates were detailed for the duty and sallied out in hot pursuit. They over? took the runaways making time several miles beyond the New Bridge, Ashley River, and re burned with them "in limbo." Officer Recd undertook, in obedience to orders, to put them back on the monitor, and wbeu on bis way out in the stream they fell upon him and beat bim badly, taking care to keep bim in a position m ;he boat while administering the "drubbing," to that be could not resort to his "arms." They were finally camed to the vessel and im nediately put in irons. UNITED STATES COCET. JONE 25.-HON. GEO. 3. J. mackey, we, like all outside ot a very limited lumber, do not know. ~ The election o a the night of the sixth of Joly Homises to be a very ammat ed affair. It is gen irally believed by those who aro to do the most if the tallong that the discussion will be heated, md prolonged to a late hour. Report hath it : That both factions of the Council will unite ipon Major Willonghby, an ex-Federal' officer, aid unanimously elect him Captain of Polios. .Shat neither of th* present Lieutenants will >e re-elected; but who are to be placed in office ?eport does net say, stating, however, that .wo colored men will be nut in nomination. Spriug-*treet Church ?nd Rev. J. H. Pickett. TO THE IDITOB OF THE NEWS. In your issue of last Saturday appears another characteristic invective from the pen ofthat meek Christian Pastor of Spring-street Church. We msh to call attention to the spirit of his lotter, and to the lact that he does not replv to, or even deny, one of the statements wu made io reference to Spring-street Church, or the McGee will eise. Ho asserts things that we never uttored or thought of, and then la* bora, like a "mountain in travail," to disprove thom. When did we ever claim any right to Spring-street Church as a "trustee?" When did we take it or hold it by "bayonet" or sell ont? This ?a a "man of s tra .v," ol his own ere atioo-a spider's web, spun out of his own bowels. But I will not invoke the shadow of blackstone and Marshall, or ask. with Donna Julia. "Antonia, where's my pocket bandker obiet?" Perhaps his "country friends," for whose benefit he says he writes, will appreciate his learned and classical allusions, and they may be enlightened by bis statemant that "Chief Ins tice Chase presides over the Temple of Strife," and that bc made a "speech over the graves of the Confederate and Federal dead at Slaenolia." Bat his eily friends, doubtless, have a differ? ent opinion of the United States Supreme Court, and also know that he never made speech, or was present, at the decoration bf ?ither Confederate or Federal dead at Mag aotts. The whole reply of Mr. Pickett reminds us pf tbe "scuttle fish." whose habit is, when at loss for means ot defence, to stir up a cloud of nie in the water, and then scoots out of sight rhos Mr. P. dips bis pen in gall, stars up :lond of invective words aud epithets, and darts mt, s ay mn: "I have done with these men. Tnesimplo facts in regard to Spring-street Church ate these : It had been occupied by .he Confederates as a military storehouse for two years before the city fell. Alter the sur render the trustees and official members of the Methodist Churches in Charleston requested Colonel Woodford to issue a military order turning over to om care their churches and parsonages in tbs city, which he did. A plan was then agreed upon that we should nold religious sei vices for the white Methodists lt New Bethel, and Spring-street should be ?pened for the colored. 'Ibis was done for two reasons : First, to provide another needed place of worship; and second, to prevent its being occupied again by the military. . At this ame (March, 1865,) there was not a preacher of the South Carolina Conference in the city. Every one bad fled. Rev. "Signed in behalf of the brethren. "WM. B. MOOSE, Secretary. At a quarterly meeting, composed of all the ?fficial members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. South, m this city, held in September, L865, Dr. T. Rozar, presid.ng elder, and J. Chamberlain, secretary, a vote was passed 'continuing the use of Spring-stroet Church :o the congregation ot colored people under ny charge worshipping there," and that body las never asked us to vacate Spiing-slreet Chnroh from that day to the tim? we volun arily surrendered it. \Vo kept it in as good repair as we found it, using it ouiv for a place >f worship for the colored people, who have worshipped there ever since the church was milt, and such others, white and colored, as ?leased to come. Rev. Mr. Loyal raised $100 to help seat the -rove at "Tivoli Garden" in March, 1868, vhich was a condition to the congregational Spring-street leaving. It was in no sense a ?urebaae or sale. It it was, let Mr. Pickett ihow the "title deed," which, he says, is re juisite in such oases. About the "McGee viii," referred to by Mr. P., we will only say 'Pring-street Church or the M. E. Church louth are not so much as named in it, but we loubt not every heir will receive his por ion in due time. The Court of Equity will lecide, and not Mr. P., who may be more earned in novel quotations than Blackstone. In regard to "military authority" anet tbe 'bayonet," so frequently referred to, we have inly to say there bas been no other authority n thia State till Governor Scott's inaugura Jon, and in the city till Mr. Pillsbury became ttayor.
