ST. JTOHWS DAY. OTTLKB RATION OF THE BAT BT THB MASONS AT MOUNT PLEASANT AND AT TUB B?HUKT ZENPhATZ. Address of JT. Somers Bulas-Presentmtlon ot m Ctold-lsesMtoa Osme, Stn,, Ac., THE MASONS Of Charleston and Mount Pleasant celebrated yesterday-a day that has been solemnised and commemorated as a sacred era by the historical adages of Anoieot, Free and Aooopt ed Masons, and comos down to thom ha llowed by traditions vitally interesting to the Moonie and Christian world-at Mount Pleasant and at theSohueteenpIata, ia a moat delightful manner -in a spirit of the broadest fraternal kindness -in a way calculated to reanimate the Masonic virtues, tending to develope the sphere of its usefulness, and promotive of social happiness. Bat the time of the organization of th a Order was twenty-eight hundred and seventy-seven years ago, when were laid the foundations of the Holy Temple, whioh was erected to God by King Solomon at Jerusalem. In the erection of this building, which was foreshadowed by pro? phecy, one hundred and eighty-three thousand six hundred mon were employed. Among such A number, there was great disorder and no system whatever; to systemitizs and regulate the labors of this vast multitude of workers; to infuse order and harmony and efficiency into their work; to guard their lives against the dangers and casualities incident thereto; to prescribo a system of sit; ns and tokens by whioh the workmen might recognize and com? municate with eaoh other; to impose upon all the builders a common obligation to adminis? ter to the wants of each; to teach them, the artaud science of architecture, and to incul? cate the practice of Fidelity, Brotherly Love, Relief and Troth, was the present system of Freemasonry struck out by King Solomon. Sinoe then the Order bas prospered, moving rapidly and ever on ward.despite the fluctuations of human affairs; and despito the blaok surges of hatred and malice and calumny that once swept around it, it stands like the venerable City of Corinth, whioh stand upon an inde? structible rock, between two oceans that hurl their waters at her feet in vain. "Many a vanished year and age. And tempest's breath and battle's rage, ' Have swept over Corinth; vet she stands A fortress formed to Freedom's banda The whirlwind's wrath, the earthquake's shook, Have left untouched her hoary rock; The landmark to the double tide, The purpling rolla on either side, As if theil waters chafe to meet, Yet pause and crouch beneath her feet." THE DAY. Early yesterday, when preparations were made for a start to the points designated for the celebration, there was every appearance of a rain. This did not deter any one from going, all looking for .fairer weather; but they were for a time doomed to disappointment. At balf past nine it commenced to drizzle, and though it stopped very soon, the clouds remained and made many look as gloomy as the sky. How? ever, at half-past ten all Nature smiled-the sun broke through the bank of clouds, they vanishing rapidly befofb th e god of day-and by eleven it was as bright and pleasant aa ?ny one oould wish, and every one is nappy : "June's glorious tun unclouded shines, And not a bud unopent d lingers; The roses laugh, and 'mid their vines Tho golden petaled eglantines Tangle their fragrant fingers." AT MOUNT PLEASANT. At a quarter past eight o'clock, the Wash? ington Lodge, No. 5, in a body, marched to the Market wharf. Here tb ey lound assembled a large riomber of ladies, and delegations from tho Grand Lodge, Orange No. 14, Friendship No. 9, Union Kilwinning, No. 4, Btriot Observ? ance, No. 78i Solomon's, No. 1, Ancient Land? mark, No. 76, Pythagorean, No. 21, Franklin, No. 96, Union and Carolina Chapter?* and others from Charleston, and the Signet Chapter, from Newberry, South Carolina. The orator of tho dajjjffyr. J. Somers Buist, is a member of the Washington Lodger and was in line with them. Among the more prominent Masons present were Grand Master James Conner, and Rev. E. A. Wagner, Past Grand Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of Texas. By half-past eight all of those assembled were on board .the steamer Pocosin, of the Mount Pleasant Ferry line, and a start was made soon after. A portion of Muller's band was present, and enlivened the trip with some excellent selections. Approaching the wharf at Mount Pleasant, the Et i wan Lodge, or thai plaoe, was observed drawn up to receive their visitors. The members wore in regalia, and bore sit banners, respectively iocribod : Faith Hope, Charity, Strength, Wisdom, Beauty. The boat rounded ?e* afc the wharf, the ladies and children were disembarked, and tho visit? ing brethren passed through the lines of the Etiwan Lodge.' Then came a brief address of welcome from the Masker bf the Etiwan, B. F. Yenning, to which Grand Master James Conner made as brief a response-both being appropriate. The line was thea formed under Brother P. K. Coburn, Grand-Marshal, and headed by the band, marched to the hall of tho Etiwan Lodge. Here they entered. As we are nota member of the "mystic tie," wo cannot, of coarse, in. form the pubho of what took place therein, but oan state they remained 1st there nearly twp hours, after which the line wasfftgain for rued, and proceeded to Hilliard's Grove, near tho Monnt Pleasant Moose. Ber? an arbor bad been constructed, over the entranoe of whioh was the following inscription of welcome: "Eti-. wan Lodge, A. F. M., S. 0. Welcome to tho Fraternity ot Charleston. Jane 24, 5969." Pendant from various portions of the speaker's stand were representations of em? blems of tho Order, and the foliow.ng inscrip? tions : Brotherly Love-Morality--Friend ship. rf . . [yA*' TBE OUATION. j* Tho assemblage was called to order about half-past ll o'oiooK by Grand Master James Conner, who, in a neat, briet 'address, intro? duced the orator of the day, Lr. James B?rners Buist, who thon delivered the oration, of whioh the following is a faint, synopsis, its length precluding publncatioe. It wag listened to throughout with profound attention, andre, ceived, as it deserved, the encomiums of all present: The speaker bogan ty staying that they had assembled to celebrate a ?rand and sublime epoch-one engraved upon the hearts i af ?na* i tiona. The ample rasourceo Irom watch bil subject was drawn, made it impossible to saj anythlEg buttha? whioh would folly interest, enchain the attention, and amuse the Arney. In this age, whet new dogmas abound, with the allurements am sophistries of a gilded mor tit ty, which threat on to undermine its exoellenoles, we gaavd with jealous oare the prinoiplea and precepts of our Order, requiring of its votaries nothing boyond human reaoh, knowing no distinction of Beet, o?ase or order, and only asks tho per? formance of that which c?-v&too the moral senae, calls into play the chaste and refined feelings, and implants into our breasts that divino preoept, "Do unto others aa you would thoy should da unto yon. Armed with its >" Lue ), whiuti constitute its strength, it is of necessity the mortal enemy of Fanatieism, which persecutes, and arrays itself against whatever is contrary to the laws of Oed. Man is made for man, ano by Lie nature prone to lean upon his kind in furtherance of all objeots that affect him; henoe, be feels the necessity of this unity, whtoh cements oar Brotherhood, constituting strength and power, which armed with virtue, are invincible', so that celeoriting as we do now upon, this, the festal day of our patron Saint, St. John the Baptist, a brother having but one common sentiment, oonceived at a time vhen, ground to the dost, matured and developed until, phoenix like, it sprang into refulgent light that permeates Christianity and liuked hand in hand with its sister and friend, now, like its great prototype, paves the way for tbe dawn of that greatest of lights, which shall usher in fraternal feelings among all mankind. It is with snob unity as this which purchased and preserved the liber? ties we now enjoy, and which has given to the social compact such solidity. Free Masonry does exolude from its confines the presence and soft influences of woman, yet we may consider the sex intelligent judges, upon whose verdict it will, notwithstanding, rely for defence of its grand tenets. Free Masonry is philosophical ; it cultivates the profound virtues, while it pursues its on? ward path as it accumul?tes in the rieh grana? ries of its progress the treasures of its never dying fame. Broad and deep to those who would penetrate the inner sanctuary, it teaches upon what rests the world ; and by what in sorntiblelaws ifs fabric is governed. Justas the first fruit upon the tree is evidence of the solidity of the parent trunk, so are all the vir? tues of Masonry bat ornaments and arguments to that philosophy which gives permanence and durability to its standing; without its philosophy, Charity sinks into a pale and insig? nificant light, and wonld seek some more genial bowers, whence', reclining in the soft luxuriance of a - greater certainty, it could be calm and content to remain. With such philosophy Masonry is calculated to break the bonds of entwining sophistry and ignorance. This philosophy, we are proud to say, is the keystone in the arch from whose brilliant light emanate those rays that bring happiness to a benighted world. If obstados are met with it is your buckler, and Uko a gran? ite promontory you will stand unmoved amidst the wild ravings of fanaticism, which surge around you only to bo hurled back amid their native foam. Its philosophy is tho nxaaAbasA upon which it rests, and as it rears its light to the free and welcoming air, we turn our eyes to the beacon revolving in parity, and drink of the sweet waters that flow in an inexhaustible stream, making us a singular Order amongst men. Our tie of Charity carries with it many rare and invaluable virtues-it is the anion of all : the virtues not of haman origin; no human mind overproduced them; they are living ema .rf?tions from the fountain of universal good. . It tells how it hag spoken ia the soft whispers of the sympathetic soul; how it has aho;v ered un? expectedly rich comforts to the dying and dis? tressed; how it h9s dried the j widow's tears, placen a joy where sorrow reigned; it founds hoe-' pit?is and educational institutions* and finds a brother in the form of a foe, and sheds light upon the prisoner, in his dungeon. It is the love of all mankind that erects the great temples from whose portals issue Brotherly Love, which makes each an 3 every Mason feel, how? ever humble his position in life, his worth and virtues, he has aplaca in tba niche of the rock of ages, Whose foundation is Love-. Such principles as these will nevor dies she fiery sun on its throne may grow-dim; -the . sil? ver queen of night may j wane; the besom's sweep of devastation may carry away all the greatness and glory of man, and entomb them in the irrelumiuable night of oblivion, but these principles will never die, and will live as God is eternity. These great asid vital prin? ciples that give it character and worth, spring from the ever-glowing fullness, and justly lay 'claim tb the prerogative of eternity. The j j meet aggressive vice and overthrow it io battle. Lastly, brethren. Living in a country whose aagls is Liberty, when tolerance to think and speak when one ohooses bas been somewhat . curtailed, and when by the sad experiences ol the late sectional strife we see all the. finer ! feelings of life suborned, still the beaten star of its genius shone in the firmament from ont ? of tba clouds-a guide to a common' and ftnal?y dispensed Charity that knew no bounds; re* maining trU3 to the sad, the only unbroken Jinks in the chain of man's benevolence. If nob remains for ns to do. We hold in om keeping high destinies. Lek us . kindly and properly apply our wisdom, and over remain i living emblems of a true and noble organisa? tion whose foundation is of dod and in God*? . yf At the conclusion of the oration, there wae i muslo by the band, after which General Con , uer thanked the audteocj for their kind atten i tion, and stated that Brother Pickett would dis? miss them with the benediction, which waa : done. The young people immediately1 repairee to a house near by, where, with muslo aoc dancing, with an interlude for dinner, the re mainder of tlie day was spent most happily There was not, so far as we are aware, an] formal dinner; most of the assemblage brough i thebr dinners with them, having a delightfu picnicing thne of lt after the regular morotai ' exercises wore concluded, The majority b tho members of the Order and their friends re turned at six o'otobk, but a large number re teamed to dance th? hours away until tho las trip of the Poeotln at ll o'clock. La Candour Lodge is one of tho oldest Lodges under our jurisdiction, for on tho 24th August next, only two brief months, she will bave been in existence for just seventy-three years, near? ly three-quarlors of a oentury. During that period Borne of the most excellent mon ia our community have, throngh her means, been gathered into tho masonic fold. Walhalla Lodge ts, it in true, a young mem? ber ot our order, for dating her inauguration m Jane, 1814, she bas now- just passed her twenty-fifth year. Bat not less energetic and laborious bas she boen than ber elder sister. And when there was a probability that the chart or of La Candour Lodge might, from un? avoidable circumstances, expire, she generous? ly came forward, and, by reinforcements from her own body, revived its drooping energies and gave to it new life, so that now the mod? ern La Candour may almost he called the child of Walhalla. It is meet and proper that two Lodges, so closely united by historical circumstances, and by tbe porsoual relations of their members, should join on the same festive occasion, as they have often joined in the honra of labor. lu the Anoieut and Accepted Kite, of which I have the honor to be a membor, there is a motto which I shall borrow, as exceedingly appropriate to the friendly union of these two Lodges. ? propose the folio win? sentiment: La Candeur and Walhalla Lodges-What Virtue unites, Beith cannot separate. PRESENTATION. Mj About six o'clock Grand Socrotary It. S. Brans presented, in behalf of the two Lodges present, a gold-beaded oane to Past Master General John A. Wagener, in so doing making a nioe little speech. General Wagener was completely sar prised, bat soon recovered him? self and responded in a tolioitoas manner. Daring this pleasant occasion Mr. B. W. Bey moor entertained the audience with a few re? marks. There were about four hundred persons at this picnic, whose beaming countenances ex? pressed more powerfully than words the happi? ness occasioned by the joyona events of .the day, for which they were mach indebted to the efficiency of the committee, Mosers. John L. Girardeau, D. D., of South Carolina. This gentleman, a nativt of the City of Charleston, has been for fifteen ?oars the pastor of one or the Presbyterian burches there. Although comparatively a youngman, his reputation for ability and pul? pit oloquenoe is high and widespread. While pastor of a church of whites, he has also, bo fore and since the war, labored zealously for the welfare of tho negroes, and has had charge of a large congregation of thom. Ibis congregation was in connection with the white church before tho war; after its close the Yankees succeeded in enticing thom away, but Mr. Girardeau's popularity is such that be has gathered thom back to their former connection with tho white church.
